Pretty much the same era, very similar sound, now it's all your opinion.

Black Sabbath they basically created metal. But I'm not saying Judas Priest is a bad band they carried on the torch. I'll have to disagree with you though on the fact that they sound the same I think they sound very different.

Good question. I've never actually asked myself which one of these bands I like better.
While I enjoy them both a great deal, I have to go with Sabbath all the way. Better records, better songwriting, more lasting influence, more consistent throughout their career. I don't think I'd take any Priest record over Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Vol. 4, or Heaven and Hell.

I've always found sabbath enjoyable but priest wins this one. I generally find their songs more interesting and Sin After Sin has slowly been becoming one of my favorite records, aside from last rose of summer its essentially a flawless album.

Definitely. Black Sabbath is kind of a trudgier, slower band with more of a blues influence, and Judas Priest musically is a bit more polished, especially when it comes to vocals. I'd say Sabbath is closer to bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experiment and Cream while Judas Priest is closer to bands like Iron Maiden and Dio.
They're both very good bands, but since I prefer blues, I'd have to say I like Black Sabbath more.

Similar sound? Have you even bothered to listen to either band?

i love both sabbath(in all its incarnations) and judas priest.
but i go for sabbath for a few reasons.
sabbath to me is more slowed down and deliberate with its macabe messages while putting emphasis on the bass.
judas priest just comes at you full force from the get go with their double guitar attack and driving rythm section.
rob halfords amazing voice soars all over a song while ozzy's gets to the point.
and for me what kind of pushed me away from priest a little was that song "parental guidance" i dont know if its the video or the song itself, it just did not seem like judas priest to me.

Black Sabbath may have created the guitar tone that every heavy metal band emulates but Judas Priest added the speed. All in all I have my personal favorites for each. Black Sabbath is guilty of putting quantity over quality and Judas Priest has some pretty lame **** as well.
I personally have discovered that I like the first few Sabbath albums and some of the stuff with Dio. Unfortunately while going through their massive discography I got pretty overwhelmed and bored with many of the albums. Their deep cuts and classics are hard to beat though and you can see their ripple in rock music very easily. The mere fact that they were the first band ever, period, to use music as a form of entertainment to scare people (like scary movies, horror fiction, or events like Halloween) and be the first band to genuinely scare the living **** out of people with occult lyrics and imagery. The emphasis on dissonance and the low toning of the electric guitar and bass guitar are hard innovations to deny.
Judas priest on the other hand added a lot to heavy metal. Dual lead guitars, emphasis on guitar melody, and the increase in tempo would influence what would become the speed metal movement before it splintered into thrash and power metal. Their influence is so great that many Japanese Nintendo composers in the 80's, such as Yoshihiro Sakaguchi and Kenichi Matsubara, have creditted Judas Priest with influencing their composition for video game music. Unfortunately I never discovered an album that was just pure awesome front to back... although British Steel comes close. We do have Priest to thank for the spikes, chains, leather, and macho attitude though ;p
Its close and I cant choose either.

Priest win, because they did Painkiller, showing their ability to adapt. Sabbath may have experimented a bit, but they always stayed fairly rooted in the same structure.

I would say out of most of your polls this one is very balanced I will go with Black Sabbath if you added Iron Maiden then you would have the three biggest British heavy metal bands

I enjoy both bands, but I go with Black Sabbath for Geezer Butler.

Black Sabbath, but Judas Priest rule too. Just Black Sabbath happen to be (probably) my favorite band of all time.

Sabbath is the foundation of all metal, Priest made it a musical form in and of itself. I like Sabbath, but Priest easily wins this contest.

I voted sabbath, because they're so iconic, and their early work pretty much defined heavy music forever. Priest is more consistant, and Halford's a better vocalist though.

Priest need to win. Otherwise I swear people are just voting for brand recognition.

I prefer Sabbath, pretty much just because. I just prefer the slower, bluesier (word?) sound.

I think I've got it:
Sabbath is TOO evil. I have heard that their guitar player practices black magic, or maybe it was the drummer? I'm not sure. But hey, some of their material is still enjoyable despite their Satanic connections.
Also, this isn't true at all. To my knowledge, no member of Sabbath has ever seriously dabbled in the occult; in actuality, many of their songs reaffirm Christian beliefs and principles.

Sabbath and priest are NOTHING alike. sabbath is classic metal, more hard rock. Priest is straight up metal.

I'm going with Sabbath, since Paranoid is one of my favorite CDs. However, Judas Priest is pretty awesome, and I'm thinking of getting one of their CDs soon. Any suggestions? I was thinking of getting Sad Wings of Destiny.

Two great icons in Metal history. I gotta go with Priest, Although Ozzy has to be most widely recognized.

priest. without a doubt, one of my top 3 favorite metal bands. sabbath with ozzy doesnt do anything for me, although i do recognize and respect their influence. however, sabbath with dio is a different story, as heaven and hell is one of my favorite albums and they just seem like a totally different band (for the better i think) with him as singer. even then though, id still have to take priest.

sad wings, sin after sin, or defenders of the faith would be my personal recomendations. stained class, hell bent for leather, and pain killer would be my next picks once you check those out

Pretty close, but I'm gonna say Judas Priest. The whole sound is just better. Their songs are more catchy. Also, I've never been the biggest fan of Ozzy. He just kinda creeps me out. Although Crazy Train is amazing.

I picked Judas Preist for Sabbath outside of two albums don't have much lasting power with me.
