View Full Version : Panic Attack - "Hysteria" Reference?

Sorry if this should be in the General section, but I figured it relates to RB.

I just got into Dream Theater, and bought a few of their CDs(I'm amazed with how great and multi-dimensional they are). Looking up the band on the internet, I saw that Muse was one of their major influences. Obviously, the first thing that came to mind was the lyric "Helpless hysteria" in DT's "Panic Attack." I looked that up and apparently it's a reference to Muse's song, "Hysteria". And both of those songs are in RB.

Just thought it was interesting :p

Dream Theater's music has changed drastically over the last ten years. I used to have their first album and it is nothing like what they are playing now. I kind of liked the older music better, but again everyone has different tastes.

Yeah I've heard that opinion a lot. I just got Greatest Hit(...and 21 other pretty cool songs) and Octavarium. The Greatest Hits is perfect, but Octavarium is great too. I'll have to get some more of their songs so I can see the difference

Who is dream theater? And why are they referencing superior bands like Muse?

Just for correctness' sake, Portnoy really liking Absolution by Muse does not exactly equal Muse being a major influence on the band, though. DT's been around a lot longer than Muse, and although I'm sure Portnoy listening to the album will have had some influence on the sound of the latter albums, calling it a 'major influence' is a bit much.

And I'll move this to History of Rock, it's a bit more suitable for that section. :D

Well, you're not completely wrong either. A song like Prophets of War on the last album sounds a lot more like a Muse song than a DT song, so there is some influence at least.

I really don't understand when people classify Dream Theater as "modern". although they are going strong today.

Where did you read that Muse was an influence to Dream Theater?

Portnoy seems to keep up with new bands/albums, and I believe he's said he's a fan, so that's possible.

I found the list. Portnoy is the man, he has some of my fav albums of 2004 up there, too.
1. Muse - Absolution (technically this is a 2003 release - but it is hands down my favorite CD of the year and probably the decade as well!)
2. Incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder
3. Mastodon - Leviathan
4. Chevelle - This Type Of Thinking Could Do Us In
5. Pain Of Salvation - Be
6. Coheed And Cambria - In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3
7. Shadows Fall - The War Within
8. Umphrey's McGee - Anchor Drops
9. Secret Machines - Now Here Is Nowhere
10. Megadeth - The System Has Failed

Since when did Muse influence the drumming of Dream Theater? I mean, Portnoy has some eclectic and obscure tastes and Ive never ever heard him reference any kind of alternative-stylistic band.

Edit: I stand corrected?

Pull me under was one of my favorite songs at the time. But I don't think they can even be considered the same Genre now.

I don't know, it's all still prog metal to me. I personally don't think that their 'core sound' has changed that much.

Okay, yeah your right it doesn't sound much different.. hmmm I heard some of what I thought was Dream Theater on Sirius Radio the other day and it sounded nothing like what I've just been listening to (gotta love bands that put their music up on Myspace). Maybe they labeled the song wrong on the display, they have been known to do that.

Obviously, the first thing that came to mind was the lyric "Helpless hysteria" in DT's "Panic Attack."

The whole song is about the experience of having a...panic attack. Helpless hysteria is one of things experienced by somebody having a severe panic attack. Don't read too much into this :)

This.

It's like saying the lyrics "Is this fight or flight?" refers to Beastie Boys' Fight For Your Right. Not really.

I know, but you don't think there's a chance this is a reference? Of course it could have nothing to do with Muse, but it's just interesting that some of their songs are(or at least seem) Muse-influenced, and they chose the word "hysteria".
Ha, I'm just very analytical. :o

If you wanna be analytical everything in that song is in some form of 8. Time signatures, chord progressions, verse, syllables, lyrics etc... Everything is structured and revolving around 8 on a music theory, composition, and instrumentation level.

The lyrics were also written by John Petrucci, the lead guitarist and
James Labrie has been using many vocal techniques including falsetto since 1990 with Dream Theater.

Hehe. And it's their eighth album, and there's 8 songs on it... and it's called OCTAvarium. :p They have so many thematic connections.

Don't forget that part of the song is also in 5/8 and others are in 6/8. The obsession with 8 was a bit unnecessary, but still cool to see everything on the album to have a common theme like that.

It is totally unnessary and not relevant to the ability to enjoy the music. It was never promoted by the band as such and a lot of the layers of 8 were stripped down by DT fans who like to nerd out and that sort of thing.

You brought up Muse and Dream Theater. Whenever someone brings up both of them, I have to do this.

... Okay, I can't find the song now. Stupid Youtube. There was a video of Stockholme Syndrome (Muse, Absolution) and Never Enough (Dream Theater, Octavarium) basically played side by side. Fun times.

What the hell are you smoking? I would see the correlation if you said a great progressive rock band like Porcupine Tree but Dream Theater and Pink Floyd? Maybe if your music scope has huge gaping holes in it.

Yeah they also covered all of Number of the Beast and Master of Puppets.

Dream Theater is far from my favorite band these days but to say they are "Pink Floyd wannabes" is just stupid. Some Floyd influence does show in some of their songs, but I don't remember any Pink Floyd songs that sound like "The Glass Prison".
