Apparently Sonic Youth and Bjork are weird.

My roommate doesn't listen to music, and whenever I play mine when he's in the room, he either leaves or turns the tv up really loud, forcing me to put on headphones. So I guess all my music is weird.

Taste is subjective, yes, but I'd hardly call those two fairly mainstream artists weird. People are sheltered.

It's been a long time since my wife gave up on making sense of my musical taste. She was very excited that her Christmas gift of a "God is an Astronaut" shirt was well received, I think that is the first time in 8 years I've expressed any real enthusiasm for one of her gifts that wasn't on the list.
I have also been using headphones for the past 6 years.

Related but not the same; my friends when they visit understand I'm really into music and know I'm open-minded. Hell, one or two of them sees me as this music "sage" or something like that. Some of them like some generic stuff, but that's them.

My wife and I are pretty musically compatible thankfully. We each have a few tastes that will bring groans from the other, but if its something new we usually both like it. She definitely is a little poppier than me though.
I had roommates into mainstream music exclusively though and it was quite odd. I was even convinced one would rip down my posters though 20 years later I'm thinking they probably just fell down by themselves and I was being paranoid.

A simple auxiliary cord will do. It's simple enough to find one, then you just plug it in through the headphone jack and you're good to go. I assume you already have a system or something.
Hell, so long as that works, you can just plug in your iPod and keep the laptop free to move around, that's what I do. I've got two sets of speakers, good quality external computer speakers (with subwoofer) and a great quality stereo system that's usually too loud for me to use.

My dad sometimes mocks or makes fun of some of the stuff I listen to, but he's got some great stuff in his collection so I don't mind. The rest of my family just keeps it to themselves.
On the other hand I find it tough to have a decent conversation about music with any of my friends. Most of them are pretty clueless and don't listen to music. While I'm not exactly an expert when it comes to music, would be nice once in a while to discuss a certain band without my friends going "who's that?"

Not that weird. And I guess weird really might be subjective. I mean, most guys my age are happy enough to sit in the bar and watch videos of the Saturdays, one of whom we all remember as being part of the S Club Juniors, when she was around 12. That's a little weird to me.

The only bands that I listen to that my wife can't stand are the ones that feature growly vocals, like Opeth (although she absolutely loves Damnation), so I usually only to listen to those when she's not around. Otherwise, I don't think I've been able to weird her out with any music yet. She's still exploring most of my music collection at her own pace, and if anything, I'm often surprised at what kind of bands she ends up really enjoying. She happily accompanies me to concerts as well, so no, no complaints there.

When it comes to my parents, my Mom doesn't really care much, although my Dad seems to get a kick out of the fact that I tend to like some of the older rock bands. Probably one of the few things we have in common.
When it comes to my friends, my music tastes are usually pretty different. They generally just copy off of each other and only go for really mainstream stuff (AC/DC, Dragonforce (ffs, ugh...), Bon Jovi, etc.) Which I can sometimes connect too, but my own taste in music sort of heads off into Punk, Alternative, Progressive, and some other stuff. For instance, I've managed to introduce them to Rush and The Offspring. But even so, whenever I play The Hives or The Clash, I get some pretty odd/annoyed looks.
When it comes to my girlfriend, we have pretty different tastes, but we're compatible. xD She's more into the hip-hop/pop sort of thing (i.e. Chris Brown) that I wouldn't ever listen to on my own, but on the contrary, she wouldn't ever listen to Judas Priest. But there's a lot of middle ground, too-- for instance, we're both fans of Guns N' Roses, CCR, Journey, and Cheap Trick.
^_^; So basically, sometimes people like my music, sometimes they don't.

Well, it's not just a matter of luck. You shouldn't push music on anybody, but you can ease them into listening to new things, if they're a bit open minded about music. When I met her in college, my wife was one of those people who never really listened to music, but simply put the radio on and used it as background noise. Since I usually can't stand to have the radio on (most pop and r&b makes me stabby, and Belgium is severely lacking a decent classic rock or alternative station), I lent her some cd's of mine to introduce her to the kind of things I listened to (nothing too heavy at first, mostly bands like Marillion or Porcupine Tree). She got into them, we went to a few concerts, and she's been expanding her musical horizons ever since. Rock Band has actually helped with this as well, since playing the game has made her a bit of a Pixies and Silversun Pickups fan.

I have a hard time believing that you can put up with (insert Yes' singer name here) and yet not want to even give Bruce Dickinson a chance. As far as talking to my friends about music, it's simplified by the fact that I really only have two people who I actually consider close friends, one of them actually helped me first get in to heavy metal, and that's how we got to know each other, and he grew up on punk (mostly because his mom would let him listen to heavy metal as a kid), so we have no trouble talking about most stuff, though I'm hesitant to think he might enjoy the kind of stuff I've caught on to because of you people :p. As for my other friend, we typically don't talk about music much, beyond music from video games.
As far as cursing, I avoid excess, and only swear when it would be particularly appropriate, or particularly effective. When you do it right, either no one will notice, or the conversation will come to a screeching halt.

My dad tries to piss me off with music. He reads Rolling Stone magazine and attempts to sound hip by talking about whatever band is in their articles or lists or whatever. And if I ever express that I dislike a band he will play their music loudly in my house (I guess I must be related to him if he can be that obnoxious). But in general I like most the music my dad likes. Every once in a while he will walk into my room and be like wtf are you listening to, but he never tells me something is bad.

More of a moral objection than a musical one, to be honest. I wouldn't purchase his stuff either, mainly because I've never found his stuff interesting.

The people I hang out with don't so much think my music is weird, they think I'm weird. Be driving down the road listening to the Zune on random, Ozzy is playing and is followed by Chopin. After that Garth Brooks, then GnR, and SRV, Yanni, etc...
Ok I admit it, I am weird!

Well I think that most of parents musical rejections are moral ones. Parents believe swearing is bad so they don't let their kids listen to rap. They think that heavy music is evil so they don't let their kids listen to metal.
I don't think parents tell their kids not to listen to music because it sucks. At least I have never experienced that with myself or any of my friends.

I've gotten the title 'music schizophrenic' for having tastes like that. My playlist can go from King Diamond to King Crimson to King Curits, haha.

Nah, parents believe rap is bad because of the prevailing ideas about it in my experience. My parents don't object to rock having swear words or objectification.

Don't bother with that Manson album if you're getting it for the music. I have one of his albums on my computer and its freaking horrible. The man loved the beach boys but didn't have their talent.

As for living with people, I run a few tracks out in the open to see if they get interested. If they aren't then I mainly play my accessible music while they're around and keep my Neubauten and Psychic TV to my car or use headphones. It is funny to see someone's reaction when I play concert footage from Throbbing Gristle on the TV. They sit and watch for like 2-3 minutes and then go, "what the hell is this?" to which I reply "Dadaism."

Yea, Throbbing Gristle would be pretty divisive. I don't think my neighbour was too fond of me last year when I fell asleep with Masonna's Spectrum Ripper playing.

My younger brother almost always enjoys whatever music I put on (not always at first, though - it took a few Rock Band play-throughs of the Siouxsie & The Banshees pack before he warmed up to them, and now he enjoys the band a lot), so I don't have any problems over here. Nobody else in my family seems to mind all the New Wave and post-punk I listen to, either. I do wish these genres were more popular stateside, though. I have only met one person offline with even remotely similar tastes as mine.

If you want to get really obnoxious just blare Kindergarten Hazing Ritual. That stuff is hard listening even for me.

The only redeeming quality of KHR are the song titles.
"Lets pretend you just tried to rape me so my parents don't think I'm a slut"
"Adult Swim vs Mindless Self Indulgence in the battle for the most annoying fan base ever"
"and the winner is... Dir En Grey"
"I'll help you win a free ipod if you promise me head"

Idk, I like some of his songs. For example, Look at your game girl is actually a good song imo. I'm mainly getting it for the fact that he lead a cult though. I'm going to start collecting cult records. I know Jim Jones made a record.

Currently my younger brother seems to be under the impression that if it hasn't been in a video game, it's not good music. Thankfully, Harmonix typically have decent taste in music, but that doesn't help with the fact that he instantantly latches on to any song I dislike, playing it non stop, singing it aloud, specifically In This Moment and Lacuna Coil.

One of my friends has started to get angry and try to ignore me when I talk about music. This is mainly due to the fact that he only listens to "emo" branded music and A7X (He doesn't listen to much music). I talk about music a lot, and now he gets angry when i even bring it up.
One of my favorite moments was when our other friend was looking through his ipod, and I kindly asked to see some of the bands he had. My embittered friend figured I wouldn't know any of the music since it is what he listens to, but was proven wrong when i knew over 85% of the bands. He then proceeded to throw a small tantrum every time I opened my mouth for the rest of the day. He's kind of turning into a jerk lately.
I guess wearing AC/DC shirts can get you pretty well stereotyped as well. And no one in my school knows Pearl Jam or Smashing Pumpkins.

I've decided to start thinking long and hard before I buy a band tee, because a while ago I got into the band Whitechapel (along with a few other deathcore bands) and got a tee-shirt at a local hot topic (I know, I know). I've since fallen out of the deathcore thing, I still think Whitechapel are alright, and they at least served as a decent launching point into real death metal, but in the end I still have too many scene kids coming up to me telling me "hey, that's a cool band".

I don't care if people tell me the band t-shirt I'm wearing is cool, although because I still have a penchant for wearing my old Mayhem and DarkThrone shirts I always have the most disgusting, smelly metalheads (student + metalhead = dirtiest people ever) approaching me to complement my shirt, that always confuses my friends who don't know the band.
