Ok so I'm reading my Official Xbox Magazine and on page 36 (on the bottom of the page)
it read: INDIE CRED: Wanna put your own music into ROCK BAND? Alex says it could happen- they're considering releasing authoring tools to let bands build their own tracks.
Wouldn't that be the coolest thing ever.

I doubt this will happen. The problem is that it's too easy for people to then use that to do some crafty sound work and put pirated tracks into the game.

this would be awesome...please patch this in HMX!!!
you could even write in songs of your favorite indie bands that will NEVER have a chance of making it onto DLC!

unless maybe you have to submit them to harmonix before they could be added as dlc. that way it could added to the store.

I can tell you exactly why this won't happen.
Imagine if everyone created the tracks they wanted and put it in the game. The would totally ruin any future income from DLC or any future games that want to feature new songs. People wouldn't have to buy another music game if they can put every track in one game. It makes no sense. I am positive this will never happen.

From what I understand, the idea would be that indie groups could author their own tracks, then submit them to HMX for review and certification to be added as DLC. Of course, there would be a lot of conditions around this, like you have to have the rights to the music, licensing rights, etc.
So this would not be, nor would it ever be, allowing players to make their own tracks to use in their game.

I think you'll find that Indie Bands will be able to add their songs, almost certainly by submitting to Harmonix directly.
In other words, the owner of the copyright of the song can submit something to Harmonix, probably with proof of copyright ownership, and Harmonix would put it out for distribution.
There's no way they're going to let every 13 year old kid rip his favorite top 40 songs and submit them for the world to use.

if no one else wants to buy another one, Harmonix can give new things for making music like plug in a real guitar and shred or something else for each new game that comes out each year that you can only get by buying the game! Ex. of new things are like: different drums, enhanced vocals, new guitar riffs and a lot more, like techno bass and you play it and edit it and you can keep the sound and make the buttons coordinating software and you can give it to friends by only via xbox live or Playstation Network and another thing they should do is live crossover platform play, where a xbox live user and a ps3 user can play together!

The thing is that the tracks in the game are not just one audio file. Each part of the song is a different file (track). Bass track, drum track, etc. You'd have to have your music separated like that first. Second, they're all hand scored. Coding something that could interpret would be a nightmare and the results would be messy. So sure, if you have the original masters (which means separate tracks), and you want to take the time, its possible. It probably will never be something for the home user to use.
