If you have been "ROCK BLOCKED" please post here and tell your story !!!

I purchased Rock Band the day it came out and managed to make it exactly one week without any one of my neighbors coming to my house to complain about the sound. This Tuesday though I was rocking out around 7PM with my stereo turned up way to loud. I didn't think it was a big deal since I live in a townhouse and the walls are really thick, and it was also early in the evening. Well my next door neighbors came over and complained to me and ask me to turn it down. I realized I had just been "Rock Blocked"

I've been reading other stories about people who have had their apartment section threaten to evict them if they don't turn the music down. I even read a story about some guys who were given a 10 day eviction notice, all because they were playing Rock Band to loud.

So far the only thing Rock Blocking me has been work. Fortunately I live in a house so disturbing neighbors really isnt a problem.

Yeah, I keep pounding out beat with my foot while sitting in my cube. My apartment has those old thick plaster walls, only time I was too loud was when I was singing... had to calm it down a tad. Going to Michael's after work today to get materials for making drum dampeners.

The guys in the apartment right next door to me used to have real band practice over there, and I could barely hear it. So hopefully when I have my Rock Band party tomorrow, we can crank it without getting the Rock Block.

Lessee... We've outdone the Frat houses already, so I'm kind of proud of that. (Campus security said "Damn, had to cool the geeks off before the frats, that's a new one")

My mom has instated a permanent Rock Block in her house... *Sigh* Oh well.

I live in an apartment and I play drums before 10pm. nobody has complained (they complained about other things before). Just don't turn your music up too loud and I don't see how rock band is different from any other games/TVs.

If you kick the bass pedal so hard that the building shakes, you might want to learn proper techniques first.

same here, my wife hates listening to the drums...

although she's much happier with the strat compared to the SG and LP, it's way quieter when picking.

We’re going to put this to the test come midJanuary when I’m inviting my friends over and they are required to bring two friends of theirs and we’re going to see just how tolerant my neighbors really are. The lady next door is practically deaf already…she must have been in a hardcore band back in her youth ;)

Ha! The folks sitting in all of the cubes around me are already used to my foot stomping ways, because I always listen rock music on headphones and tap my foot in time with the music. To alleviate my cravings for RB, I sit and waste time on these forums.

Which leads us to the question which is the worse block ???

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say being Rock Blocked is not the worse of the two !

HAHA this is funny.... i played and was singing pretty loud last night and i thought that it may be loud outside but i was jamming to hard to go check for myself. I just bought the Klipsh quintet III with the 10 inch subwoofer and a harmon kardon reciver. so if they house next to me was going to complain about last night.. there going to be screwed on friday night when i set my system up.... = )

I've only had one complaint, and it was when I was drumming at 2:30 AM--which probably would have still been OK if it hadn't been my trying to sight-read Foreplay/Long Time and struggling.

Last night, our band, Kitten Patrol, had its first get together, and there were no complaints. And our singer is loud!

I live in a house and all my toys are in the finished basement. I have my system hooked up to a home theater system so I rock it LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only rock blocking I get is my job and my wife occasionally asking me to stop and do something for her. But that only lasts a couple minutes.

Yeah, my home theater is down in my finished basement which has cemented cinderblock walls behind the plaster....so I don't think you could hear anything unless you were standing right behind the basement door that leads outside or something. One day I'll go out and test it. :)

Like 4 hours ago, my daughter and I were playing and the next door neighbor came over and started pounding on the door. I told my daughter to go answer it, heh. She came up and said that Mrs. Tansen, is asking if we could turn the noise down. I'm thinkin, this is my house dammit, it's not like its after 10 or something. I told my daughter to go down and tell her that our band is practicing and that we are going to be on tv tonight. My daughter went and told her and even said that we were getting an award. The lady apologized and left.

I then told my daughter that we shall play thou music as loud as we wish...... :D

i was playing drums at 12:30am with the music up pretty loud, and i heard a knock at my door. my neighbor is wrapped in a blanket, looking exhausted, telling me he'd like to sleep. so i said, no problem! sorry! and i turned the music down but kept playing. after another minute and some furious tapping on the drums, he knocks on the door again, and just asks, what the hell are you doing in there? so i open up the door and say, dude, i just got rock band! he looks at the set-up and sighs. and says exasperatedly, now i have to try it. he comes in (still wrapped in a blanket) and plays drums to weezer. we bonded. it was awesome.

When my neighbbor came over to my place to complain about the noise I would have liked to invite him in but I just didn't see him getting into it so I didn't bother. He's this really nice Indian guy. Maybe if I was playing "Sitar Hero" he would have come in and jammed with me.

So, I made the drum dampeners with the stuff from Michael's. They rock hardcore. One is not yet complete as I messed up one of my felt pieces. I'm picking another one up tomorrow. Use black is great, you cut them slightly smaller than the pad so that the colored ring shows through. The black just looks badass.

Thats why I bought a one family house, F that. I lived in apartments before, where the person below would hit the ceiling with a broom, lol. I like to CRANK my music, movies and now Rock Band!! That alone is worth paying the mortgage every month :). I play downstairs and when my wife goes to bed, she can't hear anything!!

I go to the University of Arkansas and the first night I got the game my roomate and I stayed up all night playing this game. Around 12:30 A.M. the guy in the room next to us game and knocked on our door and was like "Are you guys like hammering something?" and I just laughed and told him we had just bought the game and he was like "Oh well I might have to come play it with you guys later." I thought it was pretty funny.

OK, I am 30 years old, my wife and my two cats have lived in our 2 bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor for going on 3 years now. Because we have an eat in kitchen and the fact we never host dinners, we took our dining room and living room and combined the two into one big "great room" with my 50 inch DLP tv, large sectional couch, and entertainment center.

Our landlords (it's an apartment complex) are extremely kind people and the office manager is an older woman, thoughtful and kind as can be found on this planet. We have NEVER had any complaints lodged against us.

About a week ago, I get a letter in the mail from the property manager. I will paraphrase here for lenghth's sake, but basically it states that a complaint was lodged for two issues: 1) What appears to be a clock radio is going off at 5am and waking our downstairs neighbor. 2) What appears to be "excercise equipment" is making a loud noise in the neighbor's celing. The last time this exercise was noted was on a Sunday from 6:30pm to approximately 7:30pm. The letter never stated anything about being on probation or anything, just that they would like the matters corrected and if we had questions to call them.

I immediately called the office and spoke to the wonderful Office Manager, Ruth. She explained to me that the alarm clock was so loud that our downstairs neighbor was waking up to it at 5am and couldn't fall back asleep. I explained to her that my wife had to get up that early and that she had a sleeping condition whereby a loud noise was needed to wake her. Then she told me about his complaint that we were "excercising" and it was making loud thumps and he was having to turn his TV up during his "relaxing" times so that he could hear the TV from only a few feet away. I had our lease in my hand and though it doesn't list a quiet hour period, I did tell her that his complaints of that noise was during what most considered to be "common" hours. (I don't play Rock Band past 10pm ever, most times I am done by 8pm at the latest.) She blamed it on the thin walls and said that it wasn't a huge deal from her perspective, but the guy stormed in the office asking to be moved to a new apartment as he couldn't deal with it anymore. (I bit my tounge at this point as I wanted to tell Ruth "Fine, please move him!) I told her that we had no idea that either of these were issues, and that we were well within our rights of the lease, etc. etc. and she agreed. She even told the guy to come up and talk to us, we "are a great couple and very respectful of others." His response to that: "It is your job to talk to them, not mine." (At this point, I think steam emitted from my ears.) Ruth said "John, I will make note that you called me about this and that you plan on working it out with him, thanks for calling!"

So, she suggested that I/we talk with this guy to come up with a solution. Well, after talking to my wife, she turned down her alarm clock and that, so far, has still been effective for her, so I believe the 5am wakeup is a non-issue. As for the "excercising" ;) I have only played the drums twice since the letter came, both times was when I believe he was not at home and I was so light on the bass pedal that I missed a lot of kicks and performed poorly. :(

What I have done was wrote a letter to the neighbor stating that we got the notification and that we look forward to him calling us at his convienience so that we can work out an amicable solution to this problem.

I'm betting he won't call because he seems like the ***** that believes everyone else needs to do his work being a thoughtful neighbor. My thoughts on this, if he does in fact contact us:

-Sorry, but I will NOT taylor my schedule of "excercising" when you are not at home. I will do it between the hours of Noon and 8pm seven days a week. If my "excercising" during these hours is especially intrusive (Ex. - He has guests over, has to go to bed early, etc.) he can come up (or call) and ask that I stop playing and I will certainly do so.

-You live in an apartment. If you want everyone to be quiet in the building at "peak" hours, either pay $5 more a month and get a 3rd level apartment, or buy a house. I don't bit** and complain when you are slamming your cupboard doors or take a shower and can hear it during "peak" living hours.

-If you have a problem with something we are doing, call or knock on our door. We are reasonable people and respect our neighbors... respect us as we do you.

Needless to say, my wife also talked with Ruth and got her to say some things about him that just lets us feel that we are ok and don't have to walk on eggshells for this guy. Regardless, this just adds to the fact that we want to move out and into our own house... so we are saving for closing costs to purchase a house.

I live on a college campus in a suite with 3 roommates. Two of them are awesome (one is our bassist and one is our drummer. Our singer left school, so I've been pulling double duty.) The remaining roommate is a bag of tools and complains that we're being loud all the time. The main issue is that all he does is watch TV, and he doesn't have a TV in his room. Why doesn't he have a TV in his room? Cause it's sitting out in our living room NEXT TO THE LIVING ROOM TV. Why is it sitting in the living room? I DON'T EFFING KNOW. So he will watch a movie or something til like midnight and we say screw it and play anyway. Then he gets pissed and cries and we tell him not to suck.

A couple times he's actually left to stay at his girlfriend's. I consider that a double bonus. He's not there and we still get to rock.

Ok so it's saturday night at like 10:30pm. Me and my 2 friends are doing endless setlist on expert, me on drums, me friends on guitar and bass. We are on the 40th or so song out of 58. We have 5 starred almost every single one so far. Right at the end on the song we were playing xbox live says, disconnected from messenger, and the game freezes. We were just looking at the screen with a blank face, all of us thinking the same thing, we are not going to restart... So we put our instruments down and get up. 20 seconds later the game unfreezes and the song resumes, and ends without us playing the last 15 seconds of the song. We were screaming trying to get back on our instruments because we almost failed the song. Then my mom comes running into the room telling us to shut the *** up. So the rest of the night we had to play really quiet. We finished the endless setlist with 279/290 stars with like 20 gold stars.

The guys in the apartment right next door to me used to have real band practice over there, and I could barely hear it. So hopefully when I have my Rock Band party tomorrow, we can crank it without getting the Rock Block.

Hehe, my neighbor, has a much better sound system than either of mine. And they play their music [admittantly, about all that bleeds over is the bass] fairly loud.

Now, I start doing rock band, because of the bleed over from them, we tend to have to turn the volume up, but, then our downstairs neighbor complains about the sound bleed over they get :(.

Fun cycle. So far only gotten one request to turn it down, and well, I just hope they complain to us first in the future [so we can resolve the problem, damn hard to tell how the volume bleeds].

Thankfully, I own a home so my wife and I can crank up the sound and not having to worry about jack - as long as the baby is awake.

One thing as far as the drums go that have really helped the sound, is putting mouse pads over the drums. I went to Staples, bought 4 of the cheapest mouse pads they had, cut them out in a circle and rubber band them to the drum pads. Doesn't hurt the sensitivity, and it's probably 70% quieter than they were. If you're having problems with the kick pedal, maybe put a full size mouse pad under it. Might help...

Our downstairs neighbor pounded on the ceiling (somehow, we have nine-foot ceilings). We left a note and he called and now we can't play past 9:00 (weekdays). He said he doesn't mind weekends so you better believe that we take full advantage.

Would buy house, A++++++++!!!!1

I live in a house with about 20' between me and the nearest house. I cranked my stereo as loud as I feel I can get it without worrying about permanent hearing loss (lol) and walked to the end of my driveway and couldn't even hear it. I walked up to the edge of my closest neighbor's house (which borders the side with the stereo) and could only hear it faintly. This is good because I like having the volume cranked during my 2am Rock Band sessions :)

Buy a bigger house my friends cranks his system at 2 am but has reinsulated the walls and stuff you cant hear it on his second floor but when you step in the room it makes you deaf so my advice get a house in the sticks or insulation and sound proofing.

I have yet to be Rock Blocked. I live in a house but I do have a very powerful stereo system and a neighbor who complains about everything. He comes over to complain regularly when we are listening to music, watching movies, playing games, etc.

I decided to just play RB as loud as I please being I NEVER have the stereo cranked after 9pm. I have yet to "hear" him complain about this. My money says that he HAS tried to but I prolly didn't hear him knocking. He particularly hates my 400watt 12" powered Cerwin Vega sub, and that baby has been working overtime since RB.

A funny side story to that annoying neighbor is that he ALWAYS complained about my 15" Cerwin Vega box speakers (the old 1978 models, very nice speakers) and complained about the guy accross the street playing his music too loud. The guy accross the street has some "okay" speakers, but nothing really nice. So after buying my Cerwin Vega sub and 4 6" Cerwin Vega book shelf and 1 center channel speaker, I really had no need for the huge 15" box speakers. Instead of selling them for $600 to a relative in the next town, I sold them to the guy accross the street for $200 so he could now have some nice speakers to crank. I saw my neighbor outside and sais "Hey, I sold those speakers so you don't have to worry bout hearing them from me anymore". He says "Good, I can't hear the news when I'm watching TV". Then I say, "Well, I DID buy more speakers that actually give me more sound AND I sold the others to guy accross the street!!" He gave me an evil look and walked back in his house. For the last 3 years when I see him he can't go five minutes without sayinf "I can't believe you sold those to the guy accross the street he cranks those til 2am". I love it, well worth the $400 loss of what I coulda made on them.

I had a partial rock-block. We were playing in a friends apartment, he lives on 2nd floor and the people below us were getting pissed... we didn't even have it turned up loud, they were just pissed b/c of the drums. But a girl came up asking us to turn it down, and we told her no lol, she was a bi**h anyway, but she claims she was trying to study and stuff, who the hell studys on a sat night at 9pm in apartments in a college town!!! WTF?! Go to the library, seriously. But they kept hitting their ceiling and stuff so eventually we went down there and told them to quite b/c they were messing up the beat lol and we told if they did it again we'd play all damn night... and they quit :-)

One Friday night I was playing with a few coworkers, and we weren't even being that loud. We get done and decide to go out drinking around 8:20. As we walk out the door at 8:30 I notice a note shoved under the door during the TEN MINUTES since we STOPPED playing asking us to turn the noise down. The idiots even spelled "neighbor" wrong.

I own my own house so neighbors and such are not a problem. However, I am often Rock-blocked from within my own home. I have a whole room dedicated upstairs to Rock Band and love to play for a few hours when I get home from work.
Sadly, outside the door, my husband and children are constantly popping in to ask "When will you be finished?" and "Why do you always play that game?"
and saying things like "You're obsessed!" and "You may need to see someone about your addiction!"
<sigh> if only they understood...:(

If anyone comes to me with a problem about the rockin', they'll be invited to play.

Then they'll know what the noise is all about.

That's my plan too. I live in a dorm so it's bound to happen eventually. The girls below us sometimes slam their ceiling with who-knows-what to get us to stop sometimes. I swear they're louder than we are!

Wait till one of them has her boyfriend over and go down and knock on the door and ask them to keep the noise down. Guaranteed to spoil the moment for them. :)

We... had a lawn-chair concert once. We were playing with the window down and the volume way up (the TV is right in front of the window). Around 7 PM, we hear someone outside shout to request a song. We look outside, only to find about 7 people with lawn chairs sitting in my driveway.

Needless to say, it was a weird but fun night.

It's not too late dude. She's only your fiance...you might want to dump her.
That's hilarious, actually, I was living in a one bedroom apartment and the neighbors kept complaining, but thanks to Harmonix and DLC I had to keep playing and playing. One day my landlord came up with papers and I asked her what was going on. She said she was tired of me having karaoke parties. Right when she said that I corrected her by saying, "We weren't having karaoke parties, we were rockin out." Needless to say, she gave me 30 days to move, I took 30 days and now I live in a condo where before I moved in I brought my drums and and beat the hell out them then asked the neighbor if they heard anything, they said no, so I said, I'll take it. Good times, thanks HMX!!!

I live in a university dorm.

Luckily for me the walls are thick concrete. I can get away with playing the drums at pretty well any hour. It's the stereo that always ****s me.

I turn it up too loud when I play and people call security on me all the time.

Our quiet hours start at 11:00 PM on weekdays. Someone called security last time at 11:01.

*******s!

Not yet, as I live in a house and my roommates for the most part don't care. I do try to be considerate of them (especially when I play the drums since I pound on them and haven't gotten around to padding them) and the fact that there's another house only 10' from the TV.

I imagine the first time I get Rock Blocked, it'll be from one of my roommates' girlfriend. He and I have tried, but we just can't get her to strap up/sit down/belt out.

seriously, if you're playing it that loud, you're doing more damage to you're ears. i know my negbor would vouch for me, she did stuff like that, now she can hardly hear anything.
if that didn't chang you're mind about loud music, go to the store(Radie shak should have this) and buy a head set and an extender.

I just use wireless headphones to hear the music, so all they hear is the clicking from the guitar or the pounding on the drums. No singing allowed in my house because I'm awful.

Well, our rock block was weird. First, my friends sister walks down and tells us to turn the **** down. about 25 minutes later, she comes down, turns it up and plays herself, after kicking all of our band members off and only having her and her boyfriend play. It sucked bad.

This is a semi-Rock Block...

So I have a house (1959 or so built) with neighbors in semi-close proximity. When I crank the stereo, you can hear it outside, but only faintly...

I had my friends over for a Rock Band night, and several of them parked in the street (I don't have a driveway in front), in front of my next door neighbor's house. They weren't in front of the driveway they have, but they were parked in front of her house in the street. My street is basically all street parking, aside from the odd driveway, like my neighbor's house. Now, I will admit, two of my friends used the end of her driveway as a turn around to re-position their cars the other way on the road.

As another one of my friends was parking in front of her house, she comes out and yells at her to move her car. She says "ooooookay" and moves it. I'm busy rocking out, and my friend who moved her car told me the story about what happened. Another one of my friends goes outside, because crazy neighbor lady is looking up and down the street at all the cars.

During this whole time, I'm busy playing.

So crazy neighbor lady stares down my friend who is out looking at what she is doing, and she informs him she's calling the cops. He asks her why, she replies "Because you're parking in front of my house and using the driveway as a turn-around." He asks her what the big deal is, and she yells at him to **** off and she's calling the cops.

He shakes his head at her, and starts walking back inside. She's on the stoop calling the cops, and he stops and stares at her. The only this she said- "SCREAM". She yells it at him. He's dumbfounded, but walks inside without saying anything.

Few minutes later, I'm starting another song, and the cops pull up. They shine the light on the cars in the road (parked legally), in the house, talk to her for a minute (I can only assume they told her to quit wasting their time), and take off without even coming in to talk to us. We finish off the night as normal.

The best part is - The next morning, her car is parked at the VERY END OF HER DRIVEWAY (ostensibly barring anyone from using it as a turn-around).

I've since tried to stop her in the yard and apologize, but every time I try and talk to her she stares me down and walks in without saying anything...

Sorry lady, we just need to rock.

I dont know why you would appologize, you, nor your friends did nothing wrong. She just sounds like an old ding-bat. I would certainly not apologize to her for that. Using someones driveway, the last time I checked, was not illegal.

People in MN are just stupid, that's why. :P

I live here, and have figured that out. (VS, saying, living in Virginia or Arizona, where people tend to be at least twenty percent cooler.)

Technically, it could be construed as trespassing.
But if her car is parked at the end of her driveway, and it's blocking a sidewalk, call the cops yourself and watch them ticket the *****. :)

i live in a townhouse, my wife hates the thump coming from my game room when i play the drums. but oh well as far as neighbors, i dont play past 10, i believe it's a courtesy not to make lots of noise past 10. I wonder if someone was in my game room upstairs, and they were playing a song, if i could pick the song out with these so called "thumps"

I am surprised my friends and I didn't get "rock blocked" tonight.

We were playing with a rather good sound system, turned way up. Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld. 4 of us just SCREAMING the lyrics, was epic.
