does anyone think that they might come out with some kind of update that allows you to play the band world tour mode online

Page back through the announcements and do a search. I wish I had it for you, but I think that the answer was somewhere along the lines of "We want it just as bad as you guys do, but we couldn't do it in time for the Launch date." with hints of it being in a separate disc.

i've heard that BWT online is maybe that big announcement from MTV! I guess we'll find out!
