Who do you think are the best poets? IMO, it's a tie between Poe and Langston Hughes. Both Poe's stories and poetry are beautiful in that you can tell he is screaming for freedom from his sadness in every word. Langston Hughes was one of the most important figures in American history and his poems are identifiable no matter what your skin color is. What do you guys think?

I'm a Shakespeare fan, but I also really dig Chaucer.

Poe is terrible in my opinion.
I enjoy W.B. Yeats, Ginsberg, Milton.

Margaret Atwood, TS Eliot, Thoreau, Robert Pack, Joy Harjo, Emily Dickinson, and Sylvia Plath are the ones that immediately came to mind. I also enjoy Poe, but I do think he's a tad overrated, as much as I dislike the word.

I don't enjoy Poe at all, I think the fact he's rated as a great poet at all is ridiculous. I bought a book of his poems and chuckled my way through it. Sylvia Plath, on the other hand... Beautiful poetry. Emily Dickinson is ok, although I can't say I'm qualified to judge to harshly as I've not read a lot of her stuff.
Also, one of the best British poets ever; Phillip Larkin. Much as a disgusting person as he was, still a great poet.
