Now, having reached the surmise that Bob Dylan is a great songwriter, but a terrible performer, a bunch of friends and I decided to start a witchhunt to root out artists that we can level similiar accusations at.

To start with; Bathory are Black Metal's 'Bob Dylan', as I've always found covers of Bathory to be better than the originals, in despite the fairly excellent songwriting.

well recently Dylan hasn't had the best performances. But I don't think many people could beat the stuff he did during the Rolling Thunder Review. that stuff was great.

I've always felt that covers were better than his versions. His voice and the harmonica grate...

it's all a matter of opinion though. If you listen to some of the bootleg series where he started playing with members of what was going to be The Band, you'll hear some amazing live tracks. Bob Dylan in his early days did not suck live, provided that you actually like that type of music. Nowadays...quite a bit.

I can understand the topic though. Bands that are good in the studio but suck live. While i don't think Dragonforce is good at all, i've heard they are awful live. So i suppose that they're the Modern Bob Dylan of whatever genre they are

Yea I notice a lot of people feel that way, but still the bootleg series compilation from the rolling thunder review was great. The Instruments and even his voice.

Apparantly you can't D: It was people that write good songs, but are better leaving the performing of them to others :P

Hahhahahahaha i guess not lol

Wow that's stupid of me.

In that case then...any artist who gets covered by Richard Cheese. So Metallica, Radiohead, The Clash, etc.

Kurt Kobain is typically considered a good song writer, but he's pretty awful at guitar.

Good songwriters, bad singers:

Kris Kristofferson
Jim Croce
Harry Chapin
Cat Stevens (aka Yusuf Islam)
Joni Mitchell

I like Joni's voice.:( I'm gonna start a 'Leave Joni Alone' video trend...)

@JesusSilencio: His guitar playing was simple, but pretty good, I don't think he was an awful guitarist, he gets way too much flak.

Jim Croce is a perfectly fine singer.

Love me some Joni, but true, she's no Joan Baez. Kris has a really sexy voice, though.

I guess Tommy James and the Shondells are the Bob Dylan of the British Invasion.

The original Crimson & Clover to me is kind of annoying, but Joan Jett did a great cover minus the annoying vocals that revealed the great rock song underneath.

On the other hand, I really like the originals of Mony Mony, Hanky Panky, and I Think We're Alone Now.

Better songwriter... Her voice is sort of choice though, I guess.

Could throw Lou Reed in the "Good songwriters, bad singers" list as well. Although I think his voice suits the music well.

I enjoy Lou Reed's voice, so long as I don't have to look at him.
