First off i am a drummer and have been playing for about 7 years now and i am a very aggressive player and used to play in a metal band, went through a pair of sticks a week yata yata yata.
Anyways, i managed to break the pedal in the first 3 hours of playing the game. I even made a mental note as i was playing that the piece of plastic was very flimsy and i should probably make note of my foot technique, but disregarded it and put all my faith in the construction of the pedal.
Now, i am a man who swears by his roll of duct tape. And upon breaking it i simply wrapped the cracked spot of the board in duct tape effectively making a second hinge half way up the board resulting in what could be considered a "mini-pedal" this was fine and dandy for the first few hours, but upon inspection, i realized that the spring in the pedal is some sort of spawn of satan and was stretching my duct tape causing me to re-wrap the pedal every few hours of gameplay.
I was going to do what many people have done and simply resupport the footboard with a piece of sheet metal or something similar, but after reading a post about the mechanics of the pedal (thankyou whoever it was) i came up with a pretty brilliant idea once i mustered up the courage to gut the pedal.

All you need is any real Drum set pedal, a bass drum practice pad (cheapest of which ive seen run about $50) and some duct tape.

And here it is, the most expensive rock band pedal to date (i accept any challenges =P)

close up you see all it is is the computer switchy thing taped to the floorboard of the pedal, and the round magnet taped to the bottom of the footpedal very similar to how the actual RB pedal is designed.

(yea it is a double pedal, just with the other pedal and cross bar unattached. if i can get ahold of another RB pedal, i would love to use a headphone splitter to rig up a double pedal controller, if Harmonix throws out some songs with double bass :D )

That's really sweet! Smart thinkin. It looks pretty cool too. That pad or drum behind the pedal, does the pedal hit it and make the bass noise too? I hope my pedal doesn't bust but it doesn't look like that should be a problem since I'm terrible with the bass notes as of now, heh........

That friggin' awesome. I just love how much more badass it looks. Makes me want an entire set made out of industrial metal. Ohhh...shiny.

Off topic for owning Beautiful Katamari you are truly rock. \m/

yea, the beater hits the pad and it feels completly authentic. that practice pad is actually absurdly bass-y and for some reason it's louder in the next room or upstairs than it is being in the same room with it. Still quieter than a real bass drum though :p

That just looks so cool. Now you have an actual bass drum to go with the 4 other drumpads. Well done sir!!!!!!!!! :D

Nix first let me say thanks! I am also a drummer and I have played for over 30 years. I will be putting your idea to use tomorrow as this looks pretty simple and I will post pics once I get it done. This is exactly how I would have built the rock band kit if I were the one to build it. Now I can use my very expensive and very comfortable DW 3000 kick pedal with a kick pad that will make it feel real! Once again thanks!!

That actually looks sweet! I wish I knew how to mod crap, I'm scared to touch anything, maybe if my pedal breaks I'll look more into this but right now I think it works fine and I play without shoes so I'm not pushing too hard.

Alright everyone. I am confirmation and proof that this works!! Thanks again Nix!! I could not wait until tomorrow to go buy a pad, so I followed Nix directions and did my pedal tonight. I placed a box infront of my pedal and then went to practice mode and played Dead or alive. Man let me tell you this worked like a charm! It felt so much better using a real kick pedal! I have been without a pedal now for two weeks as mine craked in half and I am still waiting on the new one. Well this one will not crack! I urge everyone to do this if they have a pedal or hell go buy one and you will not be sorry! No real mechanics involved just do what Nix said and it will work! NIX YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!

the image is a little blurry but i think i understand whats going on. to me this seems like a bad idea if you want to retain warranty (for you it doesnt matter, but i will be getting a replacement EA pedal in soon and dont want to dismantle it). also how accurate is this? how do you ensure that the contact is made ONLY when the beater is at about 90 degrees from the floor (as in the same spot it would be when making contact with a real kick drum). it looks like it is kind of just dangling

this weekend or tomorrow i am trying something similar, except simply wiring a button from radio shack to make contact with the beater by mounting it on a kick pad, or put the button underneath so contact is made at the same time the beater strikes the pad

Pure Awesomesauce.

How do-able is this with just a carboard box or something else 'found' rather than the practice pad, just curious? (also, I'm very very cheap and lazy)

I just placed my rock band box in front of the beater and placed a rack of cds behind it to hold it in place to simulate the pad. I guess it would also work if you removed the beater but I did not want to take mine of. To answer the question of accuracy. It felt like I was playing a real kick drum. Since it is a system that uses a magnet to activate the kick signal it registars only when the pedal is being pushed down and the computer chip reads the magnet being hit. I played Dead or Alive three times to make sure once on hard and twice on Expert and it never missed a step. As far as Warranty goes the damn pedal was already broken and this was the most simple instruction I have seen yet other than wiring a button. Less than 15 minutes is all it took. I will be buying the Gebralter kick pad today then I will post some pictures of my set and pedal here this afternoon.
