So I'm moving out of my parents house soon and am leaving my xbox for my younger brother and sister. I was thinking of buying my xbox new but saw that buying from ebay seems cheaper. I was wondering if anyone in these forums has bought an xbox from ebay, if so would you recommend it. It would really help if you can give any feedback.:)

its kind of a grab bag there...
i have never bought anything off ebay simply because of the warranty issue... but i know plenty of people that have and never had any problems at all. fewer have had nothing but problems.. who knows what you're getting when you buy used stuff that way...

I wouldn't recommend buying a 360 AT ALL (currently waiting for #7) and I sure as hell wouldn't buy one off ebay. It's the biggest piece of **** console ever made and I'd sell it in a second if I could get all my RB songs on PS3 again without paying. If you're getting one add 1-800-4MY-XBOX to speed dial and learn to speak spanish and whatever it is they speak in India while you're at it.

Ok...so your luck has been pretty bad, but he may want the 360 exclusives that buying a PS3 would preclude.
On topic, I wouldn't recommend it. The money you save now might cost you more later. My suggestion is save your money and buy a new Elite. The life expectancy is much higher than it used to be (though admittedly, the current failure rates are still unacceptable from such a large company). By buying a new console, if it does die, you're covered. Buy used one, and you're not.

I don't even recommend you buying one.

I would say no. I bought a brand new Xbox and it RRODed in 8 months.
I bought a 2nd Xbox (for another room) and it came with a broken sync button. I had to take it back the next day and have it replaced.

I have 2 Xbox 360s - one US (a Pro) and one Japanese (an arcade). Both were bought brand new and are almost a year old now. I've never had an RROD...
...but I will say that the US one is starting to show signs of walking down the RROD path. It has started to occasionally lock up randomly.
The new 360s that have the Jasper chip in them run a lot cooler. It may have less of a chance of getting an RROD. If you buy used, you're not going to get a Jasper chipped 360. And even if you buy new, it's hit and miss as retailers still have older stock. The only way to tell is by opening the box and looking at the console to see the amps it uses. Old 360s (Falcon chip) are 14 amps, Jaspers are 12 amps.
Linkie with tons of detail on the Jasper 360s (http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/10/inside-an-xbox-360-jasper-ben-heck-dissects-the-mythical-consol/)

I'd be worried about the quality of an eBay 360, for sure, unless it was from an eBay store or retailer.
Wouldn't want to get gypped with a RRoD system and not be able to do anything with it. Seriously buyer beware.

With all the PS3s I've been reading about breaking recently I'm not sure I'd recommend that either. :p
I thought mine was broke before after some blu-ray trouble but it's been fine since.
And right after this it's offically broke. Get a Wii. Nintendo makes quality stuff. It looks like crap but at least it won't break on you.

Yup, it seems my wii is one tough little machine, the only drawback is i dont like many of the games on it, besides legend of zelda, smash bros, and mario kart.(these are the only games my younger bro ,sis and i like)

If you really want a decent X-Box, go Elite, they have the Jasper chips, and have been relitivly free of hardware issues since launch. Also i reccomend getting a cooling pad for it, it will extend the life of your x-box by years. Keep it in a cool open area, off the carpet, and it will work just fine.
I do not reccomend getting one off e-bay, unless stated that it is from a supplier. To many @$$ hats out there that are looking to rip someone off.

I definitely wouldn't buy one from eBay. Too many things could go wrong with it, and you'd end up getting shafted. I bought mine from Best Buy and got the warranty. When it died after a year, I got my full purchase price put toward whatever 360 I wanted, so I upgraded to an Elite :D

Don't the new standard 360s also have the superior Jasper hardware? I heard they did and are therefore far less likely to self-destruct, which is why I picked one up in December.

Yes they do. I would still go elite, price drop for the win.

I have heard it said by a game dealer who I know and respect that buying a used Xbox on ebay is like buying used underwear.
