Gold account for Xbox Multiplayer?

Is it necessary to have a gold LIVE account with XBOX in order to play multiplayer over the internet?

This is the first game I've tried to play online with my 360, so this is a new area for me.

I have a silver account now, and I keep getting the message, "In order to play in this mode, you need to be signed into an Xbox LIVE enabled gamer profile with Xbox LIVE multiplayer privileges enabled, and connected to Xbox LIVE."

Yes, you need XBL Gold. Check around for the $30 annual deals to get the best value. Amazon, Buy.com, Toys R Us, and others have had a little price battle going on them lately.

Thanks for the info. I have a card lying around for a Gold account somewhere that I picked up cheap (close out sales FTW!), but until now I'd neglected to use it.

Glad I finally have a reason to fire that thing up.
