I was stuck in traffic this morning, had my Rock Band tracks Vol 1 CD in my car-stereo (yeah, I'm cool like that) and Black Hole Sun was filling my car with nice tunage. As I drifted off in my mind, I started thinking: would it be possible to cheat the game into thinking you're singing if you put the mic next to the speaker, with the mic output level all the way down, and the artist's vocals output all the way up...
I can't test it myself, since the game won't come out till Q1 2008 here, but maybe this could be a nice way to play BWT single player without having to sing and play at the same time....

HMX developed karoke revolution and did think of this. they said their testers tried it and could never get any results. It just doesn't work.

I thought of this too but figured harmonix already covered this base so I didn't try it.

I tried it a bit. It worked okay for Sabotage, since that's almost all "talky parts" but where actual singing is involved, it doesn't work well. As in, not at all.

I don't understand why this wouldn't work. Record the song to a little tape recorder and play that into your 360 mic. I'm going to try this.

probably too much background noise .. you know.. like from the rest of the song. Probably won't pick up a clear signal.

Yeah, the mix of the instruments would foul up the pitch detector, hardcore.
However, if you EQ'ed the playback to eliminate as much of the instruments as possible while leaving the vocals intact (the reverse of those CD vocal track removal units/softwares), it should be theoretically possible.

Yeah, I thought about this before the game came out as well. The other day I was just goofing around and remembered that I had wanted to see if it works. I put the mic to the speaker, but there is too much feedback. It picks up more noise than anything. There is a chance it would work if it was from another source, but I haven't bothered to try that.

If someone is serious about this, then they should fiddle around with the audio options within the game. Turn down everything except the singer, then play a song on drums or guitar while recording the audio (by line-in) into your computer. If this setup is possible, it should give you a near-perfect representation of the vocal audio. Play this wav file through really good speakers off your computer while RB (with audio turned all the way down for no feedback) picks up the sound. This would be the most likely chance of success, but it's no guarantee (it's still possible that the range of frequencies required would be transmitted), and it's a pretty convoluted process.
Note that I'm not advocating using this as a cheat within the game, but as an experiment, certainly it's interesting.

I thought about that almost instantly after I began singing, but I'm almost positive it wouldn't be too accurate if at all.
