View Full Version : PS3 Wireless Problem

I decided to post this here, since although it's a tech support question, it's not directly related to RB.

Anyway, I just got a 60GB PS3 and have not been able to successfully get it online yet. In the past I have also tried it with a friend's 80GB model with the exact same results.

I have AT&T DSL internet, hooked up to a Linksys wireless router, and the setup itself works great (I get internet wirelessly on a laptop with no problems whatsoever), but it won't work with the PS3 for some reason. There is no security (no WEP encryption, no password needed, and the PS3 finds the SSID just fine when it scans)

The PS3 is able to get obtain an IP address, but for some reason cannot get past that step in the connection test. It says there is a DNS error.

Btw, I did successfully get a wireless connection to work at a friend's house with cable internet (and theirs had a bit more security), so I ought to be going about it in the right way.

Any ideas what may help? Do I need to manually give the PS3 the DNS server info? I think all my settings are automatic on my computer and within the router, but I need to double-check.

how many computers are connected to your router at one time?

how many computers are connected to your router at one time?

At the most, 2 laptops, but usually just one of them or none at all. They haven't been whenever I've tried getting online with the PS3, though. The desktop PC that's actually wired to the router isn't usually in use, either.

sounds like you need to clone your mac adress on your router. should have an option for it.

So the PS3 needs to know the MAC adress of the router? I'll try it tonight.

What about PPPoE? Do I need to change any PS3 setting to make it work with that sort of connection type? I haven't looked at it in a couple days, but I remember seeing an option for it somewhere. I'm at work right now but I'll check when I get home later tonight.

no. your router needs to clone the mac address of the computer using the internet.

The router needs the mac address of the PS3? What exactly does cloning refer to? I've never had to change any settings regarding mac addresses before. Thanks.

the mac address is a physical number on your computer. my router (a linksys) automatically clones the address of the pc i enable the option with. it really should be as easy as clicking the button.

I know what the mac address is, but why would that not allow the PS3 to use the wireless connection? Sorry I'm just not seeing how the pc's mac address plays into things. The connection itself works fine for other computers, just the PS3 has a problem with it for some reason.

its been my experience that when you can only use one connection with a router its a mac address problem with your ISP. my ISP in particular registered the mac address of one of my comps and i had to clone it with the router in order to use my xbox and laptop.

Aren't cable connections registered that way? I have DSL, and the router has username and password info stored in it that it uses to connect. It does this all in the background, of course, but I read up on this stuff a little bit just a sec ago, and it looks like the mac address shouldn't make a difference. Like I said, my laptop (and others I've tried) work fine using the wireless connection, just not the PS3. It's the only device that's ever had a problem with it thus far.

But I'll give it a try when I get home. Couldn't hurt to give it a shot.

Did you figure out what was going on with this? Seems I'm having similar problems.

Turns out all I had to do was Manually set the DNS servers to use. I thought I had tried this way earlier, but apparently I hadn't. It works wonderfully now.

To find the DNS info (with Windows XP) you can bring up the command prompt and enter "ipconfig /all" (no quotes). That'll give you everything you need (assuming you are having the same problem I did).

Definitely. I'm looking forward to Call of Duty: World at War online. Ought to be pretty cool. Also, it's nice to have themes and stuff like that (not to mention system updates, although I put one on a flash drive and did it that way).
