I recently read a huge story on Ghostbusters the game, which looks awsome by the way, but that's not the point, on par with the PS3 and 360 game they are making a version for the Wii and PS2 the second being a more cartoonish version. What suprised me is that this game is supposed to launch around october 2008!!! WTF??!! they mean to tell me that we are going to be on the eve of 2009 and they are still gona be putting out games for the PS2?!

I not trying to bash the PS2, I loved that console one the best ever!! but come on! Sony should just retire it and focus 100% on their current machine.

But it makes so much money... The PS3 needs the PS2 to offset the massive financial loss.

In other parts of the world, the PS2 still sells, and it sells well! They're going to keep developing games for it so long as there is a huge install base for it.

That's the point, how can they persuade those people to upgrade to nextgen systems (PS3 in this case) if they keep making the PS2? I know the PS2 still has some life in it, and I was predicting that it was going to last until the 2nd quarter of 2008 at the most, man was I off!!:o

It will outlast the PS3.
/sarcasm

seriously though there are a ton of people who own a ps2 and don't want to move on quite. My guess is Sony is trying to keep these people on the current gen for as long as possible. Most people, if they absolutely had to get a next-gen system, would buy a wii or 360 versus a ps3. However by 2009 this could be a quite different story.

They're making different verisions. I think the Wii might've actually helped the PS2 since it seems they're getting ports of each others games. Anytime I almost had enough intrest in the Wii games I find out there's a PS2 port coming (Tramua Center being the exception so far). Then there's some devs that haven't stepped up their next gen efforts enough so they can still put it out on PS2.

Sony brags about each Playstation having a ten year life cycle so it should still be around till 2010.

Really until they have a huge change in video game design, the PS2 will probably still be around. The 360s and PS3s are nice, but they have essentially the same games as the PS2, just with better bells and whistles (graphics, sound, and DLC). It's the same reason most people are staying out of the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray fight. The HD stuff isn't that much better than regular DVDs to make it worth the investment. It's not to say that the Next Gen (be it consoles or DVD players) aren't worth getting, just that there's a whole lot more $ to be made on last gen tech since a good portion of people just aren't buying new hardware.

I think Sony officially stated that they were going to support the PS2 for a couple more years at least. They just redesigned the PS2 to be even thinner and smaller (and removed PS2 compatability from the lastest PS3s).

Yup. Sony upgraded and supported the PSX/PSOne for ten years, and they expect to do the same with the PS2.

On the plus side for them, this should give the PS3 a chance to take hold and actually begin turning a profit for them before they shut down the PS2.

Yep. It'll see a $drop to $99 or so soon. Not everyone has HD and there's still 2000+ games for the PS2. It's got a few years left, and even after that the game vultures will snap up all the leftovers for as cheap as they can get them.
