Never played D&D myself. I do use the D&D character creation template though when I write little backstories for my MMO characters sometimes.

2nd Ed is the version that I played back in the day; it's more role-playing oriented, with dice and pencil and paper.

3rd/3.5 came out in the early 2000s, with updated rules and combat systems that starts to move more into the usage of miniatures

4th Ed came out last year and (I understand) has miniatures as the main focus of its combat system.

I played both 2nd and 3rd, mostly 2nd, both systems were pretty flawed though I guess 3rd tried to address some of the issues from the 2nd.
