Anyone who likes just one specific genre of rock is setting themself up for disappointment to begin with, but there are plenty of people that like say... both punk and southern... or classic and grunge. If you've got enough of each of these classifications, you're going to keep the complaints to a minimum, and that means more sales for Harmonix.
As far as a number goes, I think anywhere between 3 and 5 songs from each of somewhat specific genres would be fine, obviously with the possibility for more with the more popular genres and for songs of exceptional quality and compatibility with this particular format.
The genres themselves would have to be specific not only to the style, but the time period. Metal from the 80s is much different from modern metal, so a distinction would have to be made.
As a punk rock fan, I was somewhat disappointed with GH2 when I only got two songs, one of which I had to pay extra for and download (Salvation by Rancid, and then Infected by Bad Religion). Again, for $300, I'm going to want atleast 5 punk rock songs for me and my friends to enjoy.
... even though that probably won't keep me from buying it... it'd just be nice. =P
