View Full Version : How slow is your PC?

I figured I'd post this because I clicked to open Microsoft Word about 20 min ago and its still on its splash screen.

>_<

I have 2005 IBM T60 Laptop and it's fairly okay if you don't put...just about anything in it.
Seriously. It's dumb.

I have to keep everything (music, pictures, videos, and games) on an external just so this lappy can load up firefox, but even then it takes like 5 min for firefox to load up >_<

So yeah, how slow is your PC? Or if you have a fancy new PC, how slow was your old PC?

Edit: Yay, Microsoft Word loaded up...now I have to open the document... x_x

Well, my dad is a computer programmer, so all of our computers are really fast. My laptop, however, sucks. It takes forever to load ANYTHING.

that means its time to clean it up.
defrag, do your clean up stuff on the C drive, check out how much stuff you have running at startup, check out how many unneeded services you have running... make sure you dont have four different antivirus apps running along with six firewalls and three spyware apps.

dont laugh... i have cleaned up worse messes...

My computer runs extremely smoothly, it runs most new games on max settings without a single hiccup. My old PC wasn't too bad either, although it did have some adware I could never get rid of.

well yah.
I have task manager open all day just in-case something crashes.

If I defrag, it'll give me an error. It always does.
It sits there for like 4 hours, defragging itself, then at the end it goes "error".
It pisses me off <_<

I only have one Anti-Virus xD

Also, two things I've noticed about lappy (yes, I named it "lappy". Leave me alone <_<):

1) It would randomly jump from 0% CPU Usage to 100% CPU Usage between like, 30 seconds. And the only thing I run [usually] is MSN and Firefox. Very strange.

2) Adobe Acrobat Reader would randomly load up from time to time (hence why I have task manager open usually)

I hate lappy, but at the same time, my upstairs PC is a lot worse.
So I love lappy ^^

oh...yeah i forgot to even answer the question...
mine all run fine... but thats because i have been cleaning up other peoples computer messes for about 9 years now... (along with other job functions)

if only you can clean mine -_-

I'm pretty sure I can do it.
I just get pissed off when that damn error message comes up <_<

This thread reminds me of the old forum banner here. You know, the one that took up 70% CPU on my "high end" PC and basically killed anything lower quality.

Oh, and I noticed I can't run certain, uh, "combos" of apps for some reason.

I usually have After Effects open (I edit and direct videos) but I can only have AE open or else there would be eppppiccc lag.
Sometimes, though, AE isn't as RAM-whoring, so it'll let me open up firefox or something and it would run moderately smooth.

Stupid bipolar AE <_<

...but in other words. mine is fairly fast.

Internet browsing is fast, simply because i'm using Firefox.

kreepman: first.. check out ultimate defrag.. works better than the built in windows defrag, takes about a third of the time and doesnt quite suffer from lockups

however... i have had it completely hose up one of my drives (one time only, never figured out why) so as it always goes... make sure you back up your important stuff before using third party defrags...

New one runs good. Old one would take hours to run. It was a hand me down that was loaded with junk that I could not get out.

I use FF too, but its slow at times, usually with YouTube <_<

I was just running Adobe Premier Pro CS3, Photoshop CS3, Encore CS3 and After Effects CS3, using them all and occasionally rendering with more than 1 program.

I'm not gonna lie, a few times I thought it was all over.

That's with a 2.5Ghz Quad Core Q9300 processor and only 3.2GB RAM (hate vista and cant afford 64bit XP)

I joke xD

I thought about upgrading to Vista, but then someone told me Vista's bad for my RAM, which I have only 512MBs of.

Yes.
I have a whopping five hundred and twelve megabytes of random access memory.

by hose up i mean that i had to use a forensics suite to recover everything... didnt actually loose anything, but it was pretty time consuming which is why its best to back it up the first time you use a third party so you dont have to worry about unexpected problems. besides... you should back up on a regular basis anyway.

and how fast a page can pull up is only partly based on your speed. yeah, thats the main thing, but if your system can only process so much because its slow it affects everything overall.

I have a horrible e machines computer

i guess they think that running vista with 512 MB of ram is alright, it takes me forever to open up programs. I usually have just have Firefox and Trillian open so it wont slow down on me

That's what I usually have open (except for Trillian, I use MSN - and I use XP SP3) but my PC still manages to have 100% CPU usage!!

save yourself many headaches.

minimum system requirements are a 1ghz processor and 512mb ram. thats just for windows and not running anything else. realistically, you should double the minimum requirements for the operating system in order to keep it from bogging down.

Question:
Do Standard PC's that come with Vista come with the minimum requirements? Or do they come with more RAM or something, you know, to prepare the buyer?

My dad wants Vista and told me to ask because if it comes with the minimum requirements, then he won't bother to get Vista as he is too lazy to upgrade anything <_<

harbingerofdoom
02-17-2009, 03:54 AM
some do, some dont...
when i build a machine for someone that wants vista, i wont let them go less than double the minimums regardless of how much they want to spend...

i can usually come fairly close to what they wanted to spend in the first place and they dont come back in a month complaining about how slow everything is.

the gods honest truth from someone who is not trying to make a buck off of you is that you save money and headaches in the long run by buying the fastest machine you possibly can afford now and only having to do minor upgrades later rather than trying to save a buck now and having to do either major upgrades or buying a completely new system.

Yeah, I told him that and he basiclly gave him a mixture of:

"meh" and "yeah I'll do it later"
xD

I was planning on getting a top of the line PC for video editing (and GTA IV) and I had all the money saved up ($4,000!), but I decided to use that money for an actual car.

Which I don't really regret, but sometimes GTA...er, Video Editing on a faster PC seems so nice :\

4 grand will get you a smokin machine.
but you can put one together that will do exactly what you want it to do for a third of that price... easily

I can't tell if that was sarcasm, but it would be 4K + 200 a month for work <_<

I would, but I suck at building cheap PC's lol.

harbingerofdoom
02-17-2009, 04:26 AM
nope.. no sarcasm at all.
and if you can hook up a vcr you can build a computer. it really is that simple.

the cheap part is knowing where to find parts.

/edit/
its that simple as long as everything goes according to plan that is...

which brands are the best, in your opinion?

harbingerofdoom
02-17-2009, 04:58 AM
prebuilt id say toss up between alienware (which is a dressed up dell) and HP (only because i have never had hardware problems with either of them)

but everyone is going to have their own opinions on whats the best prebuilt machines.

I've got a Core 2 Quad Q9550 (2.83 GHz stock, running at 3.4), 8GB of RAM, and two Radeon HD 4850s in Crossfire. However, I have a hard drive that's dying on me, so that's bogging things down... time to get a new one, I guess.

On the Vista question, don't even consider getting it without 1GB of RAM at the bare minimum, and don't consider sticking with XP if you have 2GB or more. :)

I built my computer back in 2003. I used pretty much top of the line (at the time) parts. 6 years later with no upgrades except to the video card, here is the sad comparison:

Home computer is like a NASCAR car

Work computer is like a moped

:(

My home computer isn't super fast or anything anymore either. It's just ridiculous how bad this work PC is.

Kreepman

I just need a Hard Drive Upgrade, RAM Upgrade, and a Video Card upgrade.

Then I'll be up to speed with all you guys...minus the two Mac users xD

It might be something I need to investigate then.

I have trouble playing them off of youtube and hulu and you can forget anything in 720 or 1080 that I download.
