View Full Version : The end of Nine Inch Nails...

2.16.09: A note from Trent and a wave goodbye

Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction (http://www.janesaddiction.com/). These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really ****ing FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.

Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane's lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane's records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.
Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.

In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year - much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Are there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.
Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.

Hope they play in either the UK or Ireland before they disappear for a bit. I'd hate to miss a last chance to see them play.

Ah well, Trent is very talented and as much as I'm sad to hear that from one of my favorite bands I know there will be something from him to look forward to in the future.

And notice it says

"I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while."

I think we will see more NIN material before it's all over with.

.....Hopefully.

WELL THEY DON'T LIKE YOU EITHER.
But yeah, they're definitely not breaking up for GOOD, it's just a hiatus. And while that usually does mean breakl up, it doesn't really sound like it does here, since he just kind of wants it to disappear for a while or whatever.

I love NIN, but I'm not dissappointed with this at all. I've got to see them live twice, both amazing shows. They've put out some amazing stuff, but since the downward spiral, it has been just that. I like each new album less and less. Not saying anything they did was bad, just less to my liking. Hopefully they'll take a nice long break and come back with a vengeance a few years from now. Hopefully the Tapeworm project will finally get done, though I dunno about the label disputes between those involved. I'd like to see trent do something with a new band either way.

Besides NIN can't really break up, NIN is Trent Reznor. And whoever he chooses to record/tour with.

Bullseye.

Basically, with Trent being NIN, so long as he's making music, NIN is still around, regardless of what he wants to call it.

That being said, being familiar with Trent and his vision over the years, he's probably sick of the business side of making music, and he'll do the whole recluse thing for a bit before re-emerging.

But we certainly haven't seen the last of NIN.

Yeah, he might come back with some stuff in a few years. I mean, there used to be like 5 year gaps between NIN albums, and there was never any goodbye announcements then.

I'm just glad I'm seeing them next week :D

Just curious to know how you "break up" an individual. Although NIN on the road is many people, NIN is more or less an amazing mix of individual personalities and thoughts from a single man's head, with only the slightest outside influence.

Reznor is just going to put that Hat down for a little while... but you know it's not the last of NIN and we can be pretty sure that we will see other projects or what have you either recorded by, produced by, Etc. by this musical genius.

NIN will be back. Oh yes... they will be back. ...eventually.

Besides, my guess is Trent's going to work on producing some stuff for Jane's Addiction next. As long as doing things musically in some form or another, I'll be on the lookout.

I'm not a big fan of NIN. I enjoy them in light doses. Trent is definitely not gonna stop making music, but to come out and announce this is a bit odd. I think he wanted fans to know that NIN is taking a break for a while, my guess being 5 years at minimum. Generally announcing things like this is a publicity stunt to attract sales and/or advance some other. I don't know Trent too well, but I suppose this is just to let the fans know "we're taking a long break".

After reading this 4 times now, i still have no words to express my emotions. I've been a nin fan for about 15 years now out of the 20 he's been around. I know this is an end of NIN, but it will NOT be the last of Trent Reznor. He's hitting his peak again, musically speaking. Now that he's clean and sober - his music is showing it. I may not like some of the last works he's done, but musically it is some of his best work.

I'm sad. I'm angry. I'm happy for him. So many emotions for someone whose music has affected my whole life.

Oh and you can bet that I WILL be seeing one of his last shows, no matter what it takes, I will be there, front row again.

Might generally be a move to gain publicity, but not in this case. In my opinion, people that followed NIN closely over the last year really should have seen this coming. There were several subtle hints and then there was Trent basically saying in concert that this was something of a last ride.

Just hope they hit St. Louis or Kansas City one more time before it's all over.

I was lucky enough to be a the first Lollapalooza and it was an awesome experience. Jane's Addiction always puts on an amazing show and I look forward to seeing them for what would be my 8th time. As for NIN, they've been stale for years. Obviously for Trent it's time to try something new, take a break and see where things end up.

As a huge NIN fan (even if i've only been able to see them a handful of times) it does upset me to see Trent wave goodbye to a band I've loved. Though I am 100% sure he'll be back at some point (hell it used to be 5 to 6 years between albums), I guess my saddest part is he really has hit a musical peak the last few years. Between Year Zero (which i still think is severely underrated), Ghosts, and The Slip I felt Trent had hit a role he hasn't been on in over a decade.

There's no doubt that Trent will be doing SOMETHING the next few years (though the Jane's Addiction album rumors leave me very sad), it'll be a great day when i see a NIN album again. Hopefully Trent gives us a great parting gift with the tour...and PLEEASSEE another album before you go.

Glad he's taking a break after a good album. I'd hate to see him finish up on the downside.

There will be more NIN though, it may just be a new band name and there will be some other musicians cemented at the instruments with Trent on vocals. It's just good to take a break every once in a while

Well technically, unless there's clones involved, he can't exactly play all these instruments live ya know.
No matter if he makes it ALL, they still won't be playing without other band members.

Pretty much what he said. I believe he is just gonna put NIN on "hiatus" (hell, he's been CONSTANTLY busy with them ever since he started work with 'With Teeth', touring, making two more albums SINCE 'WT', touring even more); he's probably been one of the busiest guys in the music business the past 4/5 years or so.

Either way, knowing this could be the last NIN tour for quite some time, I'll probably catch them on this tour since it might be another 4/5 years before we see/hear anything from NIN again.

But yeah, as long as Trent is working in music, doing something...NIN will always be around. Until he officially says "NIN is done", then I'll cry. But his wording of "NIN is going to disappear for a while" just seems like he is going to take a break. Shoot, it was 5 years in between 'Downward Spiral' and 'The Fragile'; so let the guy take a break.

I'll be one of the first people that screams from the rooftops though when he announces new NIN material in the future, whenever it may be.

This was a video shot from the show i saw NIN at back in November.

Backstory:

In the video you can actually see my head. lawl. There's a bright yellow/orange haired guy right infront of trent and i'm the short blonde like two people to his right.

After this concert, my parents (who also attended the show but sat in the seats) asked me if said bra was mine since.. it was about the right size as me :P

on a side note, this does make me wanna go to bonnaroo a bit more, knowing that this being their last tour for who knows how long, and them headlining the festival, they could do a large amount of their catalogue. I'd love to see a show where they span from pretty hate machine to present day, and not the singles, I wanna see them do ringfinger, something I can never have, happiness in slavery, gave up, reptile, the mark has been made, ect....If I knew for sure they would play a 3-4 hour show I would definately buy my ticket next week.

I got the chance to see "Something I can Never Have" during their With Teeth tour a few times (which also happens to be among my favorite songs ever); and it was awesome. They still play "Reptile" pretty often as well cause I got it last year for the second time since the With Teeth tour when they came to Lexington.

But yeah, I'm also hoping for a more diverse set from them with the Jane's Addiction tour...some of their lesser known, not-singles stuff.

yeah, I saw them on the with teeth tour twice, once was in nashville on halloween night w/ qotsa, oddly it wasn't that big of a deal that it was halloween, except at the local bars where the waitresses were all wearing GREAT outfits hehe. They played alot from their older albums, but mostly the singles, can't remember if they played reptile or not. And as much as I love NIN, Qotsa blew them away, which kinda made the nin show seem less entertaining.
