This is actually a gaming headset, and I don't actually own it yet (getting it with my new PC), but I've heard great things about its quality.

The mic folds up so it doesn't get in the way.

Hmmm, I sorta want to be able to wear it outside the house. Also, I dig those retro-looking headphones.

For the money, it very tough to beat the Grado headphones. Check out the SR60's or SR80's depending on your budget.

My MIGHTY EUROPEAN CURRENCY could purchase those (it's for my birthday), but I'm trying to stay under or around £50, 'cause I'll be using them outside.

Check out Sennheiser. They make some nice 'phones and might have something that will fit your budget.
Might want to poke around http://www.head-fi.org/

The Sennheiser buds that came with the Rio Karma were the best cheap earbuds I ever had, sadly they were stolen and I'm not sure what the model was. I am now using Sony headphones, I think they are the MDR-EX85LPs, they are ok, I really hate the way the cord is set up and whenever it gets yanked my left earbud falls out. But they sound decent enough when they are in my ear right.

Earphones are horrible, I refuse to use them.

I prefer them when outside the house, but I understand because you are sacrificing sound quality.

I have no fear of people laughing at big headphones. Hell, I even sort of half-dance to the music if I'm walking alone.

Grado and Sennheiser are excellent choices, IMO. And can be gotten for fairly reasonable prices.
These Goldrings are comparable, too. And they come with a detachable cord, which is really an advantage -- the first thing to go on headphones is usually the cord because it's gets pulled too hard and too far. WIth a detachable cord, the cord just pulls out -- damage is minimal. I've had that feature on my Sennheisers for ages, and it's saved me many times over.

For me its less the fear of being laughed at then the fear that when I fall asleep on the bus with closed ears I will wind up in another town.

I dream of doing that. I'd rather have an adventure than make an appointment. I think I've watched too many films, I'm drifting off.

I once fell asleep in the NY subway and rode from the lower East side to Queens and back before I was woken up. Never again!

Awesome. So long as you're still functioning, it's ok!

I picked up these (http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/headphones/audio_headphones/around_ear_headphones/index.jsp) about a year ago at Best Buy (I think for $130) and can't think of one negative. They sound great, and can take a beating (I'm pulled them violently off my desk only to crash onto the floor by tripping on the long cord many a time). I'm not sure if that's what you were looking for, but I would say they're completely worth the money.

This. I use the in-ear ones, but I've used the pair described above before and they rock hard.

Would this be the thread to ask about people's experiences with the Beats by Dre headphones?

No, but their design is ugly and I don't want to fund his career.

I'm pretty sure those are Skullcandy ones, you can find them on most headphone websites. At least Skullcandy make a very similiar set.

My friend owns those. They are cool and they keep the unwanted noise out of your world. I just bought straight looking but great sounding sennheisers at a reasonnable price.
