Does anyone have a problem with their local EB/Gamestop/specialized gaming store employees?
Here they are complete douschebags with the exception of one employee. They treat EVERY customer including myself like they know everything and i know nothing.
**in there browsing**
me: Rockband on the 20th of December right?
them: Yep.
me: Yeah, some people have went down to the states, actually one guy in montreal got his in montreal as well.
them: THEY'RE LYING.
me: The game came out on the 20th in the states, and the best buy in montreal had them and sold them. He had a picture of his receipt and everything.
them: It must be fake.
me: No, it deffinitly wasn't. I think most people have better things to do then post fake pictures about how they found and bought rock band early in Canada.
them: Well, that's against the law.
If my work handled pre-orders or we had any other stores close by, i wouldn't even go in that place but due to it being the only game place around for getting things on time and pre-orders i have to buy there.
I've heard this is the norm with EB employees across the continent, what are your experiences? Hopefully more friendly! If i worked there i would embrace they customer and have fun helping people. They act like we owe them something.

Just because they work at EB doesn't mean they need to know everything about every single game.
I find a lot of peop;le who go to an eb/gamestop act like complete elitest/fanboy snobs with their favorite games and just because their local eb worker doesn't know "x" fact they must know nothign about videogames.

I agree with you there, but they should know MOST things, especially when it comes to big games (not like half of them know which ones are the big games...) and important things.
Example: I was in my local Gamestop the other day and I overheard a conversation about the Wii. One employee mentioned the Virtual Console to a customer, and another employee stated that he had no idea what the Virtual Console was.
I'm sorry, but how you can be helpful when you don't know what you're selling?

At least he was honest. With such an important purchase such as buying the wii, I would hope the prospective buyer would have done a little background research on what exactly they were buying. If say, they woukld buy it even without the inclusion of the VC then it's just another added bonus.

eb employees get questions from customers that the customers actually know the answer to. so after a while, they can tell which customer is doing just that, so we **** with them. there is nothing to do all day but get annoyed by the customers and annoy the customers. its you know when rockband comes out and he probably knows when rockband comes out, he just wanted to get a rise out of you. kinda like a game...to which he won because you are on this forum complaining about him. I know I bothered the hell out of customers, and yet they still come back every tuesday.

Meh, I haven't had bad experiences because I just go in, and buy stuff that I'm looking for. Though I did over hear one employee trying to sell these parents a 360 instead of a PS3 by saying "Yea, the 360 has some big exclusives like Assassin's Creed, Halo 3, Call of Duty." Thats the problem really...game store employees being fanboys.

i don't know. I work at a department store, where people ask me questions about games all day. never ONCE do i get rude and start ****ing with the customers, what kind of service is that? The past two shifts at work i've probably had about 50 people ask for the wii's, we're out of stock so i happily refer our customers to other possible stores that have them or tell them to wait until we get them on a certain date.
I didn't go up to the counter acting "snobish" it was just a simple, polite question. They've gotten stuff in early before and sold it so i thought it was worth a shot. this isn't the first time i've been in there and i've seen them be *****s to other customers.

If you don't treat someone that works at any video games store as if they are suppose to know everything or even most things about games you'd be surprised at how cool they can be. But yeah, sometimes people do seemingly have jobs that they shouldn't because of the knowledge one doesn't need but it would help them and the customers greatly if they did.
From my experience though it's rare to find a video game store employee that isn't a gamer themselves. Whether or not they are an ass though is hit or miss, basically how it is with most gamers anyways. So why be surprised if a game store employee is an ass?

I spent five years running FuncoLand, which was bought by GameStop sometime around my third year. You want to know why those kids are jackasses? It's because about 50% of the people that walk into that store either tell that employee that he's cool or the customer is jealous of his job/life. 30% of people have no idea what they are doing and are completely dependent on that employee's ability to make decisions or finalize decisions about things which the customer knows comparitively nothing.
Eventually, you start to expect that treatment. When I ran those stores, I'd have people come up to me in other stores who recognized me from work just to talk to me. You start to feel like you're pretty effing important when people you don't know recognize you. Some even remembered my named.
So what happens when somebody who doesn't need you walks into your territory? Well, a lot of times that person will start pretty early trying to make it clear they don't need your help, and that hurts your ego, and now it's a pissing match. He's going to try to trump you, and you'll do the same.
Of course, this isn't meant to say all GS/EB kids are jerks... McDeezy's ok, although I think his last avatar of him in a suit was kinda douchie... and there's a great GS really close to my apartment... but my original store (Store #732)... all those kids are about as great as used toilet paper.

Actually..... That is called product knowledge, and I would expect someone to know about most of what they carry. It is their job. While in this case and point I would not expect them to know that minor detail, I would expect them not to be a ***** either.
I agree with the original post, ESPECIALLY when it comes to anything 360 vs. PS3. For a short time I considered looking up to see if Microsoft had bought the Gamestop chain. The job is to give good customer service based on facts, not fanboy opinions. I don't even own a PS3 and it pissed me off.
Really though. All you have to do is look at this forum or any other to see why this is so. Game enthusiasts are know it alls. The job just enhances it more.

It's really frustrating having someone try to pitch something to you, and when you say "Oh, I'm not interested because of reason x" they start trying to convince you that reason x is not valid. Especially if that reason is opinion.
"Need help with anything?"
"Nah, I'm just browsing the 360 titles to see if there's anything I'd be interested in."
"Oh, I'm personally a PS3 fan. I think it's a much better system."
"Well, I went with the Xbox 360 because it was cheaper, had more software I cared for, and I have friends to play online with."
"Insert five minute rant about how the PS3 is better... not to mention that Resistance is better than Halo 3."
"Oh, I have no interest in Halo."
"Why the hell would you get an Xbox?"
It's pretty epic. There are two EB Games outlets in my city. I stopped shopping at that one. The guy I always end up dealing with at the other one does the usual information probing but is pretty savvy and has actually talked me out of a few purchases that I've discovered I'd have probably come to regret. :)

All of my experiences at an EB Games/Gamestop have generally been good. There's one guy at the one Gamestop in town in the mall who is really cool. He helps when he can, if he doesn't know something, he doesn't just make crap up, he isn't a console fanboy, and he gave me 50% off five games for doing the Truffle Shuffle in the middle of the mall.
Sure, some guys are dicks, some are annoying little bastards, some know nothing, while others know alot of things and are generally very helpful. It just depends on where your at.

They are probably pissed because they are all out of Battletoads.
No matter how many times I call them. They are out.
That game sells out fast.

I heard walmart is getting battletoads on tuesday. Maybe I'll call up and ask
I try to avoid GS/EB as much as possible. I only go in if there is a title I can't find ANYWHERE else.
Def FANBOY central and I can't stand it.

I actually overheard a particularly bad EB employee criticize a customer for his game purchase, to which the customer felt compelled to explain his purchase away as a gift for someone else. I'm sorry, but you should never criticize the customer, regardless of what they are buying and your opinions on the product.

Nah my local Gamestop has the same type. It's the company. They only like hiring kids... I mean it's only 20 something year olds that will accept the crappy pay and hours. Plus they are the only ones who want the "exclusives" that come with the crappy job.

Yeah, it sucks. I agree. Like I said, my old store (#732) is stocked wholly with douchebags. You'll have to find a tolerable store or ask the manager for the District Manager's name and contact information, then let him/her know that you think the employee's talk down to people. If you're lucky, the DM already dislikes the kids at that store (most DMs hate anyone they didn't hire themselves), and they'll get reprimanded.

The EB I used to work at got really bad.
Me: I was calling to see if you will have Assassin's Creed on Tuesday?
Them: Did you preorder it?
Me: Yeah, it is paid off.
Them: Cool, just show up Tuesday, anytime, and pick it up!
Me: Thanks.
(I then proceed to use a vacation day on that Tuesday)
That Tuesday:
Me: I'm here for Assassin's Creed
My old boss: Yeah, sorry Clint, we had someone giving bad info. The ship date is today, it will be here tomorrow.
Me: But I even got a call yesterday telling me it was in.
My old boss: Yeah, sorry, we don't know who is doing that.
Round 2
Me: Hi, I was checking to see if you are going to do a midnight release for Rock Band.
Them (same guy for Assassin's Creed, btw): Yeah, man! We are doing one tonight.
Me: Ok, cool.
I go to EB and talk to my old AM at about 7.
Me: I'm excited about Rock Band. I'm glad you are doing a midnight.
Him: We aren't doing a midnight.
Me: But the Austin Hwy store is doing one... And one of your guys just got done telling me like 9 hours ago that yall were doing one.
Him: We weren't ever doing one, who told you that?
This whole Rock BAnd thing is killing me. First, the phantom midnight release, followed by faulty guitar, followed by EA canceling my RMA.
