View Full Version : Retro Punk/Hardcore? New Wave?

I nearly had a heart attack when I heard about the Punk pack HMX plans on releasing next month. I mean, the fact that their including a song by the Buzzcocks (sure, it's their most popular 'hit', but still...I can't wait to sing Peter Shelley's vocals!) is definently worthy of praise. To show my support for putting more old punk or hardcore songs into the game(to show the kids that not all punk is a load of three-chord wankery and MTV glitz ;)), I made a list of some DLC suggestions. Also, I noticed a unfortunate lack of New Wave music in the game's setlist (Although I suppose Freezepop could constitute "Modern New Wave"), so I included a few songs or groups of this genre as well.

Punk/Hardcore:
The Clash (I know there are already two songs by the Clash in the setlist now or in the projected future, but these are two of their 'poppiest' songs. I'd really like to see them put some of their more true-to-form material in the game, like 'White Riot' or 'Clampdown'. Maybe even some of their reggae stuff. Hell, I'd even settle down if they offered up the entire London Calling album for download. *hinthint*)
Sex Pistols (If they can't put Bollocks as a DLC album, I'd have to say the Pistols constitute at least a single song pack. My choices are "Holiday in the Sun", "Pretty Vacant", and "Bodies"...but only the last one if they uncensor the lyrics.)
The Ramones (Kind of a redudant choice, since I have a feeling HMX is going to offer either their first album or Rocket to Russia as a downloadable album in the near-future. Just a hunch...*crosses fingers*)
New York Dolls / Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers (Who wouldn't want to play some of Johnny's crazy guitar leads a la "Born to Lose" or "Personality Crisis"? The backing bands of both groups are very tight, as well.)
The Dead Milkmen (Although they have so many better songs, "Punk Rock Girl" is likely the only one clean enough to work in RB. I'd have a hell of a time singing it and playing that intentionally crappy guitar 'solo'.)
Black Flag (Incredibly tight, almost progressive instrumentation on many of their songs. Henry Rollins' vocals would be a blast to sing, as well. I'd like to see the Damaged album offered as DLC.)
X-Ray Spex, The Rezillos, and Patti Smith Group (A lot of people on the boards are constructively complaining that RB doesn't have many female-led vocal parts in the setlist, so I offer three of these great bands as suggestions. X-Ray's 'Oh Bondage! Up Yours' = every tone deaf singer's favorite song, and some of the most dynamic basslines ever constructed on the part of The Rezillos.)
The Jam (An excellent combination of 1960s soul and 1970s punk rock. Their basslines, in particular, are incredibly involved. How about 'Going Underground' or 'A Town Called Malice'?)

New Wave/Post-Punk/Industrial/Goth Rock:
Depeche Mode (In a similar vein to what they did with Freezepop's songs in GH and RB, I'd LOVE to play some of DM's early material on the keytar, i.e. "Dreaming of Me" and "New Life".)
Missing Persons (Another female-fronted band, whose singer has a very distinctive vocal hiccup...how about "Walking in L.A."?)
The B-52s ("Private Idaho" is the song I'd most like to see, but I could do for "Party Out of Bounds" or "Devil in My Car", as well.)
Talking Heads (Required if there is to be any New Wave at all in the game.)
Siouxsie and the Banshees ("Hong Kong Garden", "Peek-a-Boo", "Candyman", etc. The vocals would probably be the highlight, though.)
Roxy Music ("More Than This". Might be a bit boring at some parts for the guitar, but it would be a great song to sing.)
Blondie ("X Offender" is the Blondie song I'd most like to see in the game, but I'm not sure if the lyrics would be considered too risque for RB. One could always dream, though, and I wouldn't mind the inclusion of "Dreaming" either, if only to play the drum part.)
The Smiths (Another required band. "Bigmouth Strikes Again" or "How Soon is Now?" are my top choices.)
The Cure ("Pictures of You", "Fascination Street", "Boys Don't Cry"....mostly easy songs to play, but they have solid parts for each instrument, and some of Robert Smith's vocals could pose a challenge.)
Gary Numan ("Are 'Friends' Electric?" is the only Numan song I could see being played in RB, but it would still be fun, regardless.)
Adam Ant/Adam and the Ants ("You're so Physical", "Dog Eat Dog", "Stand and Deliver", "Kings of the Wild Frontier". These would be perfect for drum duels.)
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult (This is something of an odd choice, granted, but RB needs some songs to satisfy the industrial fans out there. TKK actually uses real instruments, along with the traditional keyboards and synthesizers. "Sex on Wheelz" and "Blue Buddah" are my picks.)
Bauhaus (Sooo. HMX has put plenty of gothic clothing in RB, and you can even select 'Goth' as a character style...but no actual goth rock songs in the game? This seriously needs to change! They can start by adding "Bela Lugosi's Dead", "Ziggy Stardust", or "Double Dare".)
Sisters of Mercy (A cross between hard rock, goth, and industrial. "This Corrosion" is my top choice.)

"College Rock" (Decided to add these in after reading Megafone's post.):
Nirvana (Bleach, Nirvana's oft-neglected first album, is one of my favorite records of all-time. If they couldn't offer that album for DLC, I could settle for "Love Buzz", "Negative Creep", and either "About a Girl" or "School" as a song pack. Negative Creep would be a definite vocal chord killer.)
Pixies (Some more songs from one of the greatest alt bands is always a plus. "Debaser" or "Monkey Gone to Heaven" would be great.)
R.E.M (I was dissapointed that HMX didn't include "Finest Worksong" or "Radio Free Europe" in GH: Rocks the 80s. Now would be a great time to make amends. ;))
The Wonder Stuff (A good British alternative band. Mostly guitar-based, with very simple but catchy song structures. "Unbearable" or "A Wish Away" would be fun ones to play.)
Joy Division (Similar to my comment above about Bauhaus. RB seriously needs some more goth music.)
The Cult (It's been said before in several other threads, but The Cult's landmark album Love really needs to be added as DLC.)
My Bloody Valentine (There aren't any noise rock/'shoegaze' bands in the game. MBV would fit this nitche perfectly.)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (I'd love me some early RHCP, i.e. "Hollywood", "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes", "Catholic School Girls Rule".)
They Might Be Giants (Two words: Ana Ng.)
Concrete Blonde (Although I personally would like to see the entire Bloodletting album added, I don't think it's going to happen. "Bloodletting", "God is a Bullet", and "Sky is a Poisonous Garden" are my picks for a song pack, though.)
More to be added upon suggestion from other posters.

I posted a milkmen list I would like to see. I agree with PRG being the most likely choice, but personally I would like to see I walk the thinnest line or surfing cow. Talking heads would be fun as well.

One I have yet to see a request for that I was going to make a post about is Adam and the Ants/Adam Ant.

Dog eat dog, Kings of the wild frontier, friend or foe, even stand and deliver would rock. I'm sure they would most likely use goody two shoes however. Some of the drum beats would be killer to play.

Definently! 'I Walk the Thinnest Line' would be the second best milkmen choice. It's just a shame that HMX doesn't plan on releasing uncensored albums or song packs (to my knowledge). Otherwise, I'd have a blast playing 'Takin' ******s to the Zoo' or 'Beach Party Vietnam'...

I also completely forgot Adam and the Ants. Their one of the most iconic punk/new wave bands. Add in 'You're so Physical' to that list, though. :) I could imagine doing a drum duel for any of their songs.

i would LOVE to see some of those bands in ROCK BAND.

Black Flag's "Damaged" is one of the best and most important records of all time. It needs to be in teh game in its entirety.

I also wholeheartedly endorse The Talking Heads and The Jam.
