A band's success lies mainly with the uniqueness of it's singer's voice.

Examples of lead vocals who are instantly recognizable:
Billy Corgan - Pumpkins
Bill Armstrong - Green Day
Raine Maida - OLP
Dave Grohl - Foo Fighters
Geddy Lee - RUSH
etc etc etc

Bob Dylan has made more cash than all them bands above put together and he can't sing worth a damn...so I'd say nope it doesn't matter.

I'd say no overall, however a unique voice can make your band more recognizable and help with popularity. It certainly can't hurt (unless they can't sing worth a crap).

QFT. A "unique" voice in most bands leads to an annoying voice, only in a few bands have they pulled it off.

Bands that succeeded:
Zeppelin
Rush
Pumpkins.

Bands that failed:
Bloc Party
Coheed and Cambria
MCR and other power pop

I wouldn't say a band's success relies on a unique voice since that's such a "harsh" way to state it, but there are a lot of bands out there with a unique-sounding vocalist that have achieved success, but I doubt it was 100% because of the vocalist. It's always nice to have something that doesn't sound "Like everyone else", but I don't think it's everything.

And if you're going to mention people with unique voices, how about Ozzy, Steven Tyler, and Brian Johnson (AC/DC)? I haven't heard anyone that can mimic their singing voices perfectly.

(Rush was also mentioned, and I do agree that Lee has a very unique voice that works, but Led Zeppelin? Don't get me wrong, Robert Plant can sing very well, but I'm not sure if his voice completely classifies as "unique".)

So, overall, yeah, I enjoy a unique vocalist as it really changes up what you're listening to. After listening to an Ozzy CD, I can switch over to Aerosmith, then to AC/DC and be satisfied since each of the vocalists are different (Though Johnson and Tyler do sing in a similar "scream singing" manner, they sound different).

Nothing to do with it. The Nickelback and Creed vocalists sound like Eddie Vedder and I'm sure they push their fair share of product, none of which I'll be buying. :D

Well, the uniqueness of a voice certainly has a lot to do with the making of a good band, but it certainly isn't the only thing that matters. you mention Green Day in your post and their a perfect example. Sure, Billy Joe has a great voice, but where would they be if they didn't have the amazing riffs they created such as Longview, Brain Stew, and Holiday? Vocals are indeed important, but if you don't have good instrumentals to back it up your band is going to suck

Pearl Jam? And look what happens when someone tries to copy it. Creed who?

A band can still be good without a great singer, but having a great singer helps a lot.
