SANTA CLARA, Calif.--The Battle of the Bands is officially on. Yesterday, the Neversoft-developed Guitar Hero III revealed the python-enthused former Guns N' Roses fretter Slash would rock on a variety of unlockable guitars. Today, original Guitar Hero developer Harmonix fired back with the announcement that it will offer not just hit singles for gamers to play, but entire full-length albums from multiple labels.

The first band to receive the digital conversion will be classic British rockers The Who. Gamers will be able to form a virtual cover band playing guitar, hitting the drums, and singing along to the band's widely acclaimed 1971 album Who's Next. The album should hit soon after the game's release this fall, with new content planned on a weekly basis. For those a bit rusty on their classic rock, the full track list for the album follows:

The Who's Who's Next
: "Baba O' Riley"
"Bargain"
"Love Ain't for Keepin'"
"My Wife (Entwistle)"
"The Song Is Over"
"Getting in Tune"
"Going Movile"
"Behind Blue Eyes"
"Won't Get Fooled Again"

Harmonix also announced the first 15 songs from the retail edition of Rock Band. A glance at the list reveals a wide array of rock subgenres and decades represented, from David Bowie and Black Sabbath to The Hives and The Strokes. The first 15 songs from Rock Band are listed below, with the new songs in bold:

Artist - Song (asterisk indicates a cover version of a song):
The Who -"Won't Get Fooled Again"
Mountain - "Mississippi Queen"*
David Bowie - "Suffragette City"
Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"*
Blue Oyster Cult - "Don't Fear the Reaper"
The Ramones - "Rockaway Beach”
Rush - "Tom Sawyer"*
Bon Jovi - "Wanted Dead or Alive"
Nirvana - "In Bloom"
Stone Temple Pilots - "Vasoline"
Weezer - "Say It Ain't So"
Foo Fighters - “Learn to Fly”
The Hives - "Main Offender"
The Strokes - "Reptilia"
Queens of the Stone Age - "Go With the Flow"
Metallica - "Enter Sandman"

WOW, just wow. Thats probably the best announcement at E3. Not only have they announced all the new songs, but the first batch of downloadable songs! And they will be non other than an entire Who album!? Thats amazing, if I wasn't sold on Rockband by now, I most surely am!

Also apparently a lot of Metallica songs, I know that will make a lot of fans happy, who have been begging for Metallica since Guitar Hero 1!!

Wow.. when this website originally kicked off, I always figured this would be the better game but that GH would still be getting heavy play in my house... The more time passes the more I'm finding myself saying "Guitar Who 3: Legends Of Whatwasit?"

I'm not tryna be a fanboy or anything, but If RB was coming out first, I think Neversoft would have quite a bit of trouble on their hands.

If Metallica is exclusive to Rock Band.. that's gonna sway an assload of people (and an ass load is a LOT)

Enter Sandman is the worst song for this kind of game. So repetitive for guitar and bass, but I guess vocals are OK. (Never paid attention to the drums, might be good)

Brock_Landers
07-11-2007, 09:23 AM
Is Metallica a master track? (sorry, haven't had time to check those blogs or anything yet)

I'm guessing Rush is a cover because of how/when it was recorded..

So that's 1 of the "holy trinity" in the can.. now we're just waiting on AC/DC and Led Zepplin to crumble and the world shall be Harmonix's

Eman311

yeah I gotta say .. pretty boring metallica song.

great news and all, and that IS the song that will appeal to most people, so I think it's a smart decision, thank god there will be downloadable tracks. I'm not a huge metallica fan but they have some awesome older stuff. I know harmonix has good taste so I'm looking forward to what will be downloadable. (Dredg and He is Legend please OMG! The list this year for GH3 and Rock Band are too good to be true! I mean paranoid by Ozzy is just.. WOW. Crazy Train by Ozzy would be inf**kincredible too. Also some AC/DC and Stairway never goes wrong..

Ridiculous.

Not everyone would be interested in playing an entire Who album, so why should they be forced to pay for it if it's included on the disc? Having it as DLC allows the option for people to pay for it individually instead of paying more for the game disc with it on it.

What the **** are you babbling about? How would this cost Harmonix less money then putting it on a disc? It wouldn't cost Harmonix anything different then releasing it as DLC. It's content that's already on the disc (probably) that is being left out so they can milk it for money later on. I doubt it's something Harmonix is doing, probably moreso an EA thing, since they've done it before with The Godfather.

Seriously Sushi, you are like the worst poster ever. You spin the most inane arguments out of stuff said ever.

Can they really fit 100s of songs on this disc? I doubt it, besides it takes time, and if they put everything on the disc that means Rock Band will not be out for another year. Another plus of DLC is that you can pick and choose what you want out of the game so you are not stuck with songs you will almost never play except to beat them once through!

Im sure HArmonix would get five hundred albums on the disc. But you know what idiot? They have to pay for it! And not everyone wants to be forced to pay for a whole album from a band they may not like (though Im pretty sure everyone likes the Who). HArmonix has to make a profit idiot.

A. We don't know how many people would want it. What if those songs are fun, and half the audience never gets to play it because they have to pay for it, when it could've been on the disc?

B. True, but announcing DLC specifics ahead of the actual game being out is like highway robbery.

Where's that picture of the guy slapping his forehead when you need it?

This reminds me of those guys who figured the game should have hundreds of songs on the disc soley because of Blu-Ray's storage capabilities...

CoWmAn, are you openly accepting the fact that if EA/HMX don't make money back there won't actually be any DLC or Rock Band sequels?

Every extra song they include on the disc is more $$$ that needs to be recouped. Not to mention that noone even knows how many tracks are going to be on final disc. You're acting like they also announced that the finished game is only going to ship with 10 songs.

Sheesh

You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. You think the DLC is going to be free for Harmonix to develop for?

And again, stop making these imaginary arguments and playing with semantics. I NEVER EVER SAID THAT DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT ALBUMS ARE BAD. I specifically mentioned Metallica and The Who. EA knows that people will buy this game, and what better way to get them to spend more then to not put the content on the disc and charge DLC for it?

Stop bringing up that Harmonix has to make a profit. Between the money-hats being thrown around for getting to debut the game last night at Microsoft, and Guitar Hero 2 money, I'm sure they have enough to finance 276 Frequencys.

I doubt that is their intention. If you don't care for the songs on the game then how do you expect to care for the DLC songs. Especially since the Who is in the game! The fact is you pay for the game to have songs and you pay for the extra songs to download, thats the bottom line, nothing more nothing less.

Not so much. We do have a Metallica song on the disc. Comes right with it and everything. Down the road there will be DLC. We would be insane to offer a full album by one artist in a game thereby alienating literally everyone who doesn't like that band. Offering it has DLC makes it a choice. If you want it you can get it. If you don't want it, you don't have to get it. And despite what you appear to be saying- there really only can be so many songs that come on the disc for it to be even remotely possible to kind of make your money back. No game is going to come out ever with 300 top rock tracks for $50-$60. It isn't even kind of possible.

And no. We can't fund 275 Frequencys. We don't own the franchise as I have told you probably hundreds of times and it isn't our choice.

Wow, so where's the proof of this exactly? AFAIK they only announced one thing for DLC and that's an album of The Who.. and guess what? if you like them, they're also included in the game!

So if I'm correct in reading this, what you're basically trying to say is the only way EA and HMX can make this right by you is by selling Rock Band for no charge (because microsoft already gave them lots of moneys after all lawlz), and massaging your left buttock after they hand deliver it to your doorstep?

I've got no issue with calling a spade a spade, but how about you save your complaining until all the details of the game have actually been released? If they put it out with only 15 songs and charge for the rest, hey go nuts and I'll even help you out.

No, I'm against announcing specific DLC content(such as exact songs) before the game is out; chances are that content will already be on the disc and you need to purchase it to unlock it. Harmonix and EA have done it in the past.

Well just promise me- and hopefully us- that you won't pull the same kind of **** you did for Karaoke Revolution Party. That's not fair at all. Charging us for stuff we already "bought". I could care less about content that isn't on the disc. That's cool, I want that. I just don't want to pay for something I already essentially own.

And I didn't mean you could make new ones, I meant that the budget for the game was probably small that you could fund 275 more of them.

Eman311

I'm sure there is a hefty licensing fee with putting what is considered one of the best albums of all time into your game. A few of those songs by themselves are pretty big draw songs. I can understand your concern.....but if they have 50 plus songs on the disc it makes perfect sense to me.

CoWmAn

Oh okay, I see what you're saying there.. and to an extent I can see where you're coming from.. but I'm just gonna say that I don't think that'll be the case this time.. and even on the offchance that it was, the realist in me still sees that if they weren't planning on charging later down the line, it wouldn't be financially viable and would never have made it ont he disc anyway.

But you didn't buy them. You bought the disc. You bought 50 or so known tracks for use in the game (which was a good deal). The rest were licensed for download not disc but as an effort to spare serious amounts of bandwidth and make it a possibility for dial up some DLC was included on the disc. If that DLC had come unlocked already the game would have had to have cost twice as much and you would have been forced to buy EVERY song. I am havinbg a very hard time understanding where you are coming from on this, your feelings aren't even sort of economically feasible.

And I am done. This is a very dumb pissing match about something that is awesome.

My price point is $1 to $1.50 a song, and if they can keep the disc/DLC around that, I'm happy paying that price and giving them some reward for their work. I don't expect 500 songs on one disc for $50, that's just being unrealistic.

To include a whole album would bump up the royalty costs, which would increase the retail price of the game. Having it as DLC gives people the option. I don't see what's so hard to understand about that?

Kaboobi

That's fine. My early frustrations took over my typing. What I meant - and where my concern came from- was content that is already on the disc but they're charging you to unlock it.

Sushi, what was I supposed to put in my sig again?

Nobody wants you here anymore. Stop posting. You are trying to troll and make inane arguments out of every goddamn thing that gets announce for no reason. People hate you over at Freq.com and people are starting to hate you here. Stop turning every topic into a friggin pissing match.

I bought the disc. The songs where on the disc. I had to pay more to play them. You (not personally) charged me for something that was already on the disc. It's just ridiculous. It's like when EA charges for alternative jerseys in Madden, those are already on the disc. Guess I'm only paying for basic jerseys eh? I wasn't aware that I didn't get everything on the disc. But the fact that you can't guarantee me that this won't happen again is really discouraging.

"pretty much.........theyre not going to charge you to unlock something on the disc. Microsoft wants us to fill up those hard drives
"
Are you saying in general or what? Because many companies have already made you pay for something on the disc. EA, Sega, Activision, etc etc.

I guess thats what happens when your rock council is made up from some dweeb from the E street band. Holy Crap!!!!! Not the E street band. How many albums did they make? Wasn't it like freaking 1. Where is the Alice Cooper, Ozzy, Motley Crue, Ratt, Def Leopard, AC/DC, Guns and Roses, Velvet Revolver, Smashing Pumpkins, Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Ronnie James Dio, or the freaking D?

The Who is much more influential and repsected than any of those bands on that list, and I understand you are porbably some 12 year old male whose father owned a few too many leather jackets when you were growing up, so Ill make this easy for you.

Not everyone wants their game to be flooded with 80s glam/metal. get over it. Not one of these songs is bad by any standards. Thinking of 3 songs from the top of my head, Reptilia is one of the greatest songs in the last 10 years, Wont Get Fooled Again is possibly the greatest classic rock song of all time, and Say It Aint So is a great song from a great band.

HEll I dont like all songs on the list. I completely hate Bon Jovi, but Im still excited for wanted Dead or Alive. Why? Because I know there are thousands of people that adore that song, and you know what? I actually started to like that song with Rock Band in mind.

When the next bunch of songs are announced and all we get is some song by The Sword, Warrant, and some obscure B side from a popular band, then you can complain, but right now, the song list is great likable and varied as hell.

Anyone can find something to love here. In fact I found everything to love.

Well I dont mind paying that much for songs we havent played before. Whos Neext I would gladly pay 2 bucks a song, but it should be cheaper if they want to make it an impulse buy.

Kind of off-topic, but as much as I LOVE Reptilia, I think it would be awesome if they got 12:51 and Juicebox for DLC

Don't waste your time with clowns like him, Sean. The rest of us get it, and I'd wager that the vast majority of us are right there with ya, and appreciate all the work and the *love* that you and your co-workers are putting into Rock Band. The same love and dedication that shone through on Freq, Amp, KR, and the GH series.

Much respect.

Wait. Why would you multiply 40 by 2? And where was it said that GH3 was going to have 50 songs?

Because there is two times more instruments, that means twice the content. And apparently GH has 50 songs. Thats what Ive heard. So ok:

GH3: 50 x 2 (guitar/bass) = 100
Rock Band: 40 x 4 (all 4) = 160

Well, if you do it that way, you should have said "playable parts" instead of songs. From what I'm hearing is that people are just saying 50 songs because GHI had 30 main and GHII had 40 main, but that doesn't mean anything. I'm thinking it might be closer to 60+ main, because we're not even sure Neversoft is still continuing to do a bunch of bonus songs. All that means right now is that Harmonix bands aren't in it.

This is a perfect illustration of the benefit of having multiple music game franchises out there. With GH2 there was no competition (and probably other factors) which gave them little reason to pump out downloadable songs. But with RB and GH3 competing, people can point to one or the other and say that "X has more songs on the disc" or "X has more downloadable songs" etc., which ultimtately will push both games to give us more.

I doubt the validity of what spike said, especially without a source. Only 40 songs?! Probably not. Here's what was said in the Yahoo-exclusive GH3 article/interview:

"Though the final song list hasn't been revealed, expect over 70 tracks in Guitar Hero III, the largest set yet for the franchise."

I really hope it's 70 main songs with no bonus songs. I could care less about the bonus songs.

I can live with bonus songs, but what's better: 70 main songs or 40 main and 30 bonus. I pick 70 main.

Also, I just remembered one thing that already proves false what Spike said about 40 main songs. I remember that they said "Sabotage" was only available after completing a certain part of co-op career mode. With it being a co-op career song, it probably isn't in the 40 main list, and isn't a bonus song.

I assume that they will be the same accross all consoles. Although I could see it happening that PS3 gets certain songs first which come out later for the 360 and 360 gets songs that don't come out until later on the PS3. Something like that so there is a variety of songs out there. In the end though I couldn't see it being good for there to be too many exclusive songs because that would just upset people.

The problem is that each main song costs far far far more money to license, and each bonus song costs little, if any money as most of them are in-house by Harmonix bands. I'm sure we'd all like 70 awesome licensed songs on the disc, but that's really not possible unless you want the game itself to cost $100.

And Sabotage is in GH3, and that SpikeTV section was about GH3, not Rock Band.

I am aware of the costs of licensed songs. I'm just wondering what kind of bonus songs we're going to have now since most of the former ones were from Harmonix bands, and aren't a viable option for GH3 anymore. I'm thinking GH3 might give us a whole lot of licensed songs in order to compete with Rock Band.

Also, I wasn't referring to SpikeTV, I was referring to a forum member with that name.
