After reading how down strumming seemed to be problematic, I decided to upstrum it only. Not only that, I used a sort of picking technique so I would not fully extend the strum bar in yet another effort to reduce the chances of damage.
So all seemed well for a while then after one day of not playing I started it up with my wife on drums last night. At first I thought I was just sucking due not playing the day before. Then... well.. we decided to play run for the hills. That seems to have put the last nail in its coffin. On the next song the stum bar gave up the ghost, it would only register nearly every other strum. And these were upstrums.
Luckily I have a XBOX and GHIII so we won't be impacted too much. I just thought I would let people know that it does not seem to be how hard you play it, or which direction you play it.
My advice would be to just play the guitar normally. If you have a good one it won't(shouldn't) die on you but if you baby it it will still die. You might as well play it normal and find out sooner than later (before the warranty goes out).
