How to voice chat during multiplayer band quickplay?

I was trying to play with a group of friends online and we couldn't figure out how to get the headsets to work. I had mine plugged into the Stratocaster with the adapter and my friend on the other end had his plugged straight into the Xplorer. We were able to chat using private chat, but we couldn't hear anything without it. Is there something you have to press to communicate? It's kind of hard to choose a song without discussion...
