You can't make the instruments communicate via a wire, but you can power them via AC adapter or USB. See my thread HERE (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88775).

Buy NiMH rechargeable batteries and a charger. You will be spending some money up front, but you an recharge the batteries hundreds of times.

You can use that method on both drums and guitar as they use the same voltage, but I can't explain it much simpler than that. Fellow modders will vouch that I have written that for as non-technical a user as I possibly can. The simpler method is the alligator clip method which has no chance of frying your equipment if you follow my directions.
But I will give you the very simplest way there is to make wired power:
1. Get a USB cable (6 feet at the very least).
2. Cut off one end and strip the jacket.
3. Strip the red and black wires.
4. Connect the red wire to an alligator clip.
5. Connect that alligator clip to the terminal where the positive battery terminal connects to the rest of the internals (as shown in my other thrad).
6. Connect the black wire to an alligator clip.
7. Connect that alligator clip to the terminal where the negative battery terminal connects to the rest of the internals (as shown in my other thread).
8. Connect the intact end of the USB cable to your system, a powered USB hub, or one of the those AC adapters with a USB output.
