This SUCKS! Went to work today and worked 5 hrs and then they told me since there was no work, I got laid off. At least they paid me for the rest of the day.
Anybody else get laid off due to the economy. Now I don't think I will be able to afford most the DLC anymore :( Especially with this month having at least 2 albums that we know of.

There is a difference between being fired and being laid off.
To the OP...very sorry to hear that you got laid off. I can't even imagine the stress that is going to put you through.
I am lucky enough to have a job that I won't be laid off from. Criminals just never seem to go away.

you could start selling drugs. People will need them to perk themselves up during their ****ty futures.

That sucks dude. I was laid off from my job in oct 07 and I was training to be store manager for 40k a year at age 19. Its bittersweet I guess because I can go to school now, and the company would have gone down the hole eventually anyway (DVD rentals.. lol). Getting a college degree is more important to me anyway at this point, without it I'd have to have some sort of skilled trade, and I don't do skills well.

Brilliant, let's promote the downfall of mankind! Let's add to the problems already facing people during these tough times.
To the OP, sorry to hear about that man, it really sucks. Keep applying, there are jobs out there, you just have to keep your head up to find them.

This is what infuriates me about our new president - Emergency measures need to be taken to end the war and push education and yet all we see are his family on magazine covers :p
OP: good luck, man. My recommendation would be to try and start your own business on Ebay or something :(

My step-dad got laid-off, but recently got re-hired for a full 3 weeks promised of him staying. The three weeks ended today, but they sent him out to Texas to drive more trucks out, so, he has a job again.

Well, lets see. My Brother-in-law was laid off in April of last year (MBA education with factory manager experence) and has not found a job yet. Then his wife Michelle's employer went bankrupt in October (BA in Management and was a Director of HR) but she can't find anything either. They couldn't afford DC anylonger so they moved in with Alesia and I after Thanksgiving.
Then in December I was laid off (MBA, corporate financial analyst and manager of finance), but was able to land another job within a month even though I had to take an $11,000 per year cut in pay (contract analyst for health care).
Than, Alesia was laid off in January (MBA, and liscenced financial planner) and it will be a long time before people start investing again so she will have to either find a new career path or be out of work for a long time.
I think Ed is going to start his own construction business, he is trying to get his contractor's liscence now. He wants to get it before they forclose on their house in the DC area because they are three month's past due on their payment and with neither of them employed they just can't make any payments. So, right now they are trying to "Short Sell" the house to keep from forclosure, but the market is no good so they are afraid the house will be taken before it sells.
Anyway, don't feel alone, it is happening everywhere...

I didn't get laid off or anything, I have a job and go to school, but I was trying to get an internship with KPMG, and the interview went great, but they called me and said they weren't taking anyone due to the economy.
Better luck next year, I guess.

Ouch! That hurts man, sorry to hear about all of that. Thanks... but it is just a part of the struggles of life. Everyone takes in on the chin now and then, the important thing is to shake it off and keep fighting until that big ol' KO sends you down for the dirt nap at the end of the fight.

Several close family members I know have been affected. One took the opportunity to retrain her skillset, and then parlay'd that into a higher-paying job. So she actually came out ahead at the end of the day. I even know one local company that profits MORE in this environment since it provides services to unemployed/fired individuals.
I use these examples as the model for the times. There are avenues of opportunity for those with the ingenuity and determination to take advantage.
The one thing you can't do is give up. It is quite easy to get discouraged, throw up your hands, and say "screw it." You're not helping yourself if you wallow in sorrow and self pity. And quite often those who set themselves up well in the bad times will be the first to benefit once things turn up.
Good luck to you!

I work at a plant that is swimming in debt and is tied directly to the plunging housing market.
Yet everyday they tell us that our jobs are safe and not to worry.
Let's just say I'm starting to worry.

I luckily haven't been caught up in the downturn in the economy at my job, but I've definitely been there before. As an I.T. contractor, you kinda get used to it.
But for those of you who have been hit, here's something that might make you smile, if only for a few minutes:

This guy got laid off back in the dot-com era and started making these videos. Pretty funny stuff. :)

Thanks to all those that replied. I'll find myself employed before you know it. Even if it is taking a 10 dollar an hour cut to work at Wal-Mart. But hey, I'll be with my fiancee :D

Yeah, I mean he's had a whole month and a half to fix everything! What is taking so long?! (Nevermind the fact that it took the last guy 8 years to get us to the clusterfack we're in right now...)
Okay, I'll quit trying to start a political debate now.
I lost my job in November 07...I was fortunate enough to have a side job that I was able to turn into a full-time job. Not that it hasn't been tough. I tried this last fall to get a part-time/seasonal job to have some extra money for the holidays.....couldn't find a damn thing!

Being a government worker I won't be getting laid off and the recession only affects me in that some of my retirement savings have been taking a hit and interest rates really suck so my bank accounts don't build up as fast. Looking back, I'm glad I decided to stay with job security instead of the big pay raise. Some people who went to school with me who got hired in at the same time decided to work for some government contractors for the higher salary. Some of them probably don't have jobs now.
I don't particularly like what I'm doing at the moment, but I'm thankful that I have a decent paying job that is recession proof.

The Economy is pretty bad everywhere. And the state where I live at (Michigan) is said to be the worst right now. My mother just lost her house to foreclosure. She worked hard for 10 years only to lose the house. This economy is just horrible.
I'm lucky I still have a job. Half the people where I work at have already been laid off. Of the people in my department ( Only 3 of us left) I would be next on the list. Hopefully I can make it to our busy season where they usually start calling people back.
