View Full Version : A Fun Bass Song

I was torn between posting this here and in General, but I guess it's pretty rock related....

I'm looking for a really fun song to play on the (IRL) bass. Any style of music will do, as long as it's not something super hard/easy. So just post any really fun bass song, here, I'll start.

Luke's Wall/War Pigs - Black Sabbath

Difficulty - 6/10

This is an incredibly fun, reasonably difficult one that I started last night. Butler is an awesome bassist, and the song just sounds great, anyhow. The initial slow part is fun and easy, the pre-verse is a little bit trickier, and the verse itself is harder still, leading into the hardest part, the guitar solo, (and mini bass solo!), and winding down with a little jam-ish type thing with tons of fun little riffs.

Now it's your turn!!! You can adhere to the formula I used or make up your own, just post some kickass bass songs!!

Megadeth-Peace Sells

6/10

This song has a rather fun bass intro but to get effectively get it down at BPM speed, you need your pinky finger for this song. Once the intro is done, the first part is relatively easy other than the transition from D-E(A string) to the F sharp-G(E string) during the chorus. I haven't quite the the fast part all the way done, but with a little time it will become easier. The hardest part is when the bass enters in with the sixteenths notes on three different Es. That one requires either a)speedy fingers or b)decent picking skills.

Thank you, JukeBoxHero, now I will post another one.

Panic Attack - Dream Theater

Difficulty - 4/10

Yeah, I know, PANIC ATTACK!!!! JOHN MYUNG!!!! HOLY CRAP!!! It's really not that hard at all. I figured most of it out by ear. The left hand is pure beginner material, and the right hand can be done pretty easily even with just two fingers, if you can play the intro riff, you can play the whole song. It's fun nevertheless, and great to listen to as well!!!

crap, I thought we were talking about what is in the game, the songs by Rush are catchy on bass, kind of a step up from remembering one riff but...

Chemical Warfare - Dead Kennedys 7/10

The whole thing is just upstrumming/strumming really fast, with a few progressive notes thrown in. The bass stands out more than the actual guitarist so it will earn you notability.

Ramble On - Led Zeppelin

Difficulty: 3/10

The way the bass fits in with the drums and acoustics is amazing. One of JPJ's best bass performances. It's just a plain fun song, too. It's best to put more feeling into it rather than worrying about getting the part right.

Since it's what I'm currently working on I'll say Peace Frog by The Doors. I'm not gonna bother scaling the difficulty since, in my experience, someone's easy is someone else's hard. It is tricky since it's a helluva groove and the song is entirely based on that groove so if you lose it you're cooked. Fun as Hell though if you can nail down the groove.

That might be but I don't think my fingers have the endurance yet. :(

Panic Attack is beginners material? I'm confused. Here I thought that was intermediate or some****. I'd call a song like The Model (Big Black) a beginners song...

On the left hand, it is. On the right hand it's probably about intermediate - advanced. It's one of Myung's easiest songs, really.

Fun bass

YES - Roundabout

Difficulty 7/10

One of Chris Squire's best bass performances IMO this song a has great and catchy bass line to it that actually plays a key role in the song and blends well with the guitar. Bass intro is catchy and although repetitive it is quite tricky to master and for some parts does overtake the guitar for the lead rhythm also, probably one of my favorite bass songs and a great display of Squire's great bass playing

Kinda surprised I expected JukeBoxHero to jumo immediately at any Yes song ;) after all Chris Squire is a great bassist :D

Excellent! I wish I'd thought of that earlier. But I guess AxlVanHager is right about the difficulty - I'd probably give that more of a 4/10, MAYBE a 5/10 for the length, but yes, that is a really fun one. My mom is a big Yes fan from back in the day and has been asking me to learn that one, but I haven't gotten around to it until now.

Got another one from my awesome bassists arsenal

The Police - Synchronicity 2

Difficulty: 4/10

This song may not be that difficult, but the bass line is catchy and sounds great. The intro bass is basically played through most of the song, but it has some exciting points like the chorus. Sting is a great bassist and vocalist and this entire song is full of some of his greatest bass lines, but this song in general jumps at me as a fun bass song.

Here is a bass cover:

Here's two, one easy, one hard.

Got the time - Anthrax. Difficulty 3/10

It's a simple progression in Am, but the speed can make it a little tricky at first. It was my sound check song for years. Difficulty goes up by 2 if you do the bass solo (an extra point if you slap the end like it's supposed to be).

Black Sunshine - White Zombie - 8/10

It's pretty fast, walks the fretboard, and is in a wierd signature (12/8, i think, i forget). It's very tricky, especially being that fast on the E string if you haven't built your hand strength up yet.

I don't know, good keyboardists are hard to come by. You could try the Ray Manzarek method of doing both a keyboard line and a bass line. :D

Anymore convincing though, can be found in these videos(IMO)...

Edit:Cool choices Soror, by the way, if you mind asking, do you play by ear?

I'm assuming your saving up for a great five-six string instead of any you can get?

Also, since you learn how to play Panic Attack by ear. I was wondering, if you could send a file of your transcription in some form if you wouldn't mind. :o

I'm looking at two, actually. A five-string and a six-string, respectively. Both in the mid-range, price wise.

Do you use Powertab? I've never actually written it down, but it'll only take an hour, tops. And do you want the whole thing, or just all the components? Because let me tell you, this song is really modular, that's what makes it so simple.

Unfortunately, I don't have power tabs so I could receive that way. If you would be kind enough to do so, I would want to have the whole transcription because my ears are not quite developed.

On the subjects on those basses, though, I'm not sure about the ibanez, but the peavey looks quite nice.

Yeah, I've tried that exact Ibenez out in the store, but not that particular Peavey. The ones I did try were friggin' awesome, Peavey is an excellent manufacturer of fine basses. :D

Oh, and Powertab is a great free software for writing and playing back tabs. Go download it from its website, (<-google for it), and some tabs from Ultimate-Guitar.com. You won't be disappointed, and you won't want to go back to regular tabs, trust me. ;)

I will tomorrow, I changed my policy to little to no tabs, but it might come in handy for the tabs I do need.(Only tabs I look at are in the play along books for the most part).

It's cool that you've tried out those basses and like them, not sure when I would do a dive for 5-6 string.
