The new site: rockband.com just launched and if you look under songlist it says there is gonna be 40 songs.
That seems like a great amount, especially considering how huge some of the bands are.
Also Head to head mode was announced. basically pro-face off, but thats great!

Plus if you notice, they also mention there will be songs from the 60's....any guesses? Stones?

As long as they keep pumping out the downloadable songs as fast as they say they are, 40 will be fine to start with.

considering who's next also will be out on day one that brings the total to 50+
sounds decent.........i expect the rest of the songs to be pretty big name artists as well.
but what about bonus songs? will we see any of those?
edit: make that 48

Aw I was just going to post about this, you beat me to it Sushi, 40 songs sounds decent. Especially for the level of bands they are getting so far. Also with 100+ songs over the next year, I could easily be looking at playing 100 songs or so conservatively. The new site looks great too, hopefully some new videos pop-up soon.
I also notice it says songs from 60s 70s 80s 90s and 2000, but they have yet to announce any 60s songs, I'm wondering what they will be, hopefuly some good ones!

If you notice the second message of the thread, I noted the same thing...;)

it says 40 "licenses" songs........so there is a good possibility. 10-15 quality bonus songs would hit the spot. and the people at harmonix make some great tunes and know some great bands in boston.

you know what they say, great minds...
I'm thinking Stones, and I don't know who else, maybe some Beatles, Hendrix, SteppenWolf. House of the Rising Sun - The Animals. I don't know there a lot of bands to choose from, hopefully they are all as solid as the first 15 or so.

I think Cream would be a riot!

yeah I hope 40 doesnt include the bonus songs!
Either way, it's a sick number when you realize all the DLC that is (hopefully) coming and the fact that you have vocals and drums.. it's literally 3-4 games in one.

Yeah, I don't think 40 is including the bonus songs. Hopefully theres a good amount, at least 20 would be nice.

None from the 50's? So no Johnny B. Goode
They mention Freddy Mercury under the singing part.
For anyone that may still have their head up their ass the PS logo is on the site. :p

If they include just 10 bonus songs along with the 40 licensed tracks, they'd be above the number of tracks Guitar Hero had when that series debuted. I can't believe how fast these music games are growing. Those 25-30 songs in each of FreQuency and Amplitude seem so small now.

I did not even catch that. I was praying for some Queen. Hopefully some Fat Bottomed Girls or Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Also I hope there are bonus songs, basically all those boston bands that we wont get in GH III, I'm hoping they are in RockBand, they are really good, and I would hate not to play some new stuff by them

I agree. I was really sad to find out that they left out The Slip from GHII. I hope they bring them back, they played my favorite song from the first game.

40 Songs seems a bit low considering we can assume the game itself is selling for $60, let every other next gen game. I'm shocked at how many people are ok with this, with Guitar Hero II we got what, 62 songs and 72 for the 360 version. 40 is a pretty low number, and I hope they aren't gimping the total song list in Rock Band to just to milk DLC.
"Hey guys, wan't to put these 20 extra songs in Rock Band? It'll give 60 songs out of the box"
"NO! Just relase the game with 40 and put that stuff on the marketplace"

If I remember correctly it was 40 licenced tracks in GH II, 8 tiers of 5 songs, and for the Xbox 360 version it was 48 songs, the rest were bonus songs, so there is a pretty good chance there will be more than 40 songs in Rock Band too. Besides the prospect of 100+ songs over the next year for the game.

Guitar Hero 2 only had 40 licensed songs, and 22 bonus songs. I wouldn't be surprised to see 10-20 bonus songs in RB either.
Plus you have to consider that there are 4 tracks for each song, not just 2, so each song will have 16 tracks they have to make for it, as well as 4-5 audio tracks to go with it, not just 2-3 like GH.

GH2 was maxed out when it came to number of songs they could fit on the disk. Since RB is so huge and essentially is 3 games is one, the disk can only hold 40-50 songs on it

Wouldn't the bonus songs also need to be licensed? HMX doesn't own the rights to them, the bands do. If the bands own them then they would have to be licensed.
That many tracks?
I came up with 6 tracks per song.
Guitar #1 - Lead / Rhythm / Bass
Guitar #2 - Lead / Rhythm / Bass
Drums
Vocal
Original Vocal - not sure about the need for this one. It could be on the vocal track.
Every else clumped into one track because there is no need to isolate it.

yeah but a lot of the bands consist of HMX employees

And licensing for unknown/unsigned bands isn't going to be as expensive as say.... Metallica, AC/DC, or Led Zeppelin songs.

From SpraynWipe on another forum (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2408693&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=35#post330627622):
40 licensed is identical to GH2, and 10 more than GH1. The limiting factor is that we'd have to make the game more expensive to include more tracks just out of licensing alone.
The term license here does not refer to the bonus songs on GH2 so we just might be getting bonus tracks.

Songs from the 60's eh? *prays for White Room, Prays for it hard*
That song is the best Rock Band song to have. The Drums is what makes it so awesome.

40 licensed tracks is not that far from GH2. Considering you can now play these tracks with 2 additional instruments, that does not seem an unreasonable starting number.
Plus, if the intent is to make this an open platform for downloads, user generated content, etc, the exact number of on-disc tracks is largely immaterial. The continuous sources of content will make up for any perceived limitations on the physical disc.
