Discovery Communications has announced a partnership with Activision, teaming up to create videogames based on Discovery’s nature themed television shows. First on the docket? Why Meerkat Manor of course.
Could television be going the way of the dodo? Well no, not necessarily, but Discovery Communications (distributers of the Discovery Channel) is certainly expanding its options.
Discovery has announced a partnership with Activision, the giant behind Guitar Hero 3, to create videogames based on some of the channel’s popular nature television shows. According to Discovery Chief Executive David Zaslav (as told at a Reuters Media Summit), the impetus behind the decision was because Discovery is “really trying to get away from being a cable company and into being a content company.”
While specifics like the financial terms of the partnership were not discussed, one show, “Meerkat Manor,” was mentioned as an upcoming game. This popular Animal Planet show follows a family of Meerkats, the Whiskers, in a kind of documentary soap opera…only with animals. It was not disclosed as to what genre of game Meerkat Manor would be, but with the emphasis the show places on family dynamics and survival, perhaps it will be a sim (ala SimAnt, but with better graphics).
The games are slated for release in late 2008, but what other games can we hope for? Unfortunately it seems as though the focus will be on nature programs, so a MythBusters game is probably out of the question. Perhaps a Man vs. Wild game, or better yet, Animal Face-Off: The Videogame. Gorilla vs. Leopard, Hippopotamus vs. Shark, Polar Bear vs. Walrus—imagine the possibilities!
No Mythbusters?! I hate this game already!
