got back from school with a ton of work. i was told yesterday there would be a test today for science. on top of that yesterday i was given an 800 word essay for english, and a 1000 word report on genetics. last night i was up until 11pm when i finished so i couldnt study for my test. today before school i got 10 minutes of study and i took the test. i ended up with 26/28 with practically no study and i told my parents i didnt study because i literally couldnt and i told them my result and they crack it at me saying i dont work hard enough when all my tests this year have been A+'s and my brother failed his last 2 tests and he wasnt told off. now ive had my precious xbox taken of me(which i only use on weekends) until i get 'higher grades' they say.
what the hell is wrong with them? what grade is higher than an A+???

Well.. they could be reading too many articles on video games screwing up kids' lives.
First off, treat them with respect. Have a serious conversation with them and detail exactly how much you do for school. Try to get them to understand how you feel basically.
Second, if you really are doing great in school, and they seem to think you should get perfect grades (which is very hard to do) I'd consider setting up a meeting with your school counselor or something. Speak to the counselor first, tell them what your 'rents say, and then try to take it from there. Hopefully your parents will ease up once they speak to someone other than you, or your friends.
Your parents just want you to do well in school, get into a good college, etc.. that's what it comes down to, and you can't blame them for that.
Good luck :)

i miss the days of 800 word essays. What a terrible way to parent BTW. Also, this is why you should have just bought your own xbox, that way when they try to take it away you just grab it and run out of the house and go back later after they cool down.

lol THAT never goes away. I live at my bf's parents house with him (we're both college students, 21 and 22) and his mother tries to pull things like that all the time. She's like YOU HAVE TO DO X AND Y OR GET OUT OF MY HOUSE. hes like if i leave then nikki leaves and then you dont have a house phone, internet or electricity (we cover those bills). So she shuts up.

They are doing this for your own good. I had a friend who easilly scored A's in every classes and his parents were very stricts. The day he started to ignore his parents, he started to get bad results and doing drugs and he hates his parents. Well, there is no lessons to take from this story because I'm pretty sure that the situation is different from yours but you should talk to your parents instead of complaining to others.
BTW, 26/28??!? The only time I had a score that high was in computer classes and once on an English class (not first language and the class was very basic)

Don't worry about it.
In fact, don't stress yourself out too much about high school. You risk becoming burned out and resentful of the education system.
Save your energy for college and the real workplace. Hard work there can pay dividends. Hard work in high school just contributes to shoddy metrics (such as class rank) that are forgettable once you graduate.
Also, once you graduate, unless you stay in academia, no one cares if you can quote Shakespeare or break down the intrinsic causes of the French Revolution. Focus on classes with real-world application. I curse how much time I had wasted in "well rounded" courses full of forgettable trivia.

This is absolutely true. It doesn't feel like it when you're in High School, but your high school GPA really only matters if you want to get into an Ivy League school or something, and a degree from one of those schools, while nice, isn't worth the trouble.
Get to college, take a major that interests you but has real-world application (business, engineering, etc.). I took International Studies with a Latin American Studies minor (I had just come off a tour as an embassy guard in South America, hence my interest). Interesting classes; practically useless for getting a real job. I don't want to discount humanities, history, geography, etc. but they won't get you employed. Take some of these classes for some "roundness", but don't major (or even minor) in it if you want to have a good chance at a job when you graduate. Fortunately with my experience as an officer I'll have no trouble getting a great job when I get out. But I certainly won't do anything professionally with my major besides put it on my resume.

This is exactly what I was thinking.
Some parents are crazy sticklers like that I guess. My own never really cared how I did on individual tests or assignments, as long as I got good grades on my report card. Like others have said, grades don't ultimately matter that much either.

You need to talk to them. They see 26/28 as you relaxing and using more time to do things you're not supposed to. You obviously see it different.
Yeah getting mad over something like that is rediCULOus, but I see where they're coming from.

It does seem a bit unfair. I get the feeling that they have different standards for you and your brother. You wouldn't happen to be the oldest, would you?
Also it might seem a bit drastic now, but they are only trying to do what they think is best. I know I wished I could have had stricter parents. Like you, it was really easy for me to get good grades in school. I remember I never studied for my tests and usually ended up with one of the highests scores in the class.
However since I was never really pushed in school, my grades and attendance dropped in High School. School was never a big priority in my life back then, and now that i'm trying to go to College its very difficult.
You should try and speak to your parents and let them know how you feel. But dont let your fellings make you resent your parents.

I don't think its the grade their mad about, It's the fact you sound like a slacker. you only do whats necessary to pass and you don't push yourself to be better than that while your brother tries and fails. You have the ability and your not using it while others would love to have it and use it. They want you to show some ambition.

Well a 26/28 is a 92.8% which would have been a solid B in my school district (94%-95.9% was an A-). It's okay, I literally tore up and ate my Calculus test when I got an A- on it. I strongly believe I should have gotten an A+.
My school district's grading:
A: 94-100%
B: 87-93.9%
C: 79-86.9%
D: 70-78.9%
My college was even worse:
A: 95-100%
B: 90-94.9%
C: 80-89.9%
D: 70-79.9%

Speaking of which, my college health professor just told us that the only way you get lower than a B+ in his class is if you exceed the allotted hours of absences. I have a feeling my GPA is gonna be pretty awesome for my first semester of school, being that my other two classes are SQUARE DANCING and History (which i'll have my bf's help with, and the teacher is cool).
So yeah, OP, when you go to college, make sure you have awesome professors before your parents murder you :p

Haha, I never studied until my senior year for the AP tests and my parents knew it. I still got the grades, though, not to mention I dropped a 29 on my second ACT, without any of those ACT classes, which wasn't even used.
OP, be adult with them. Be prepared, even going so far as to create papers of notes because stuff like that is impressive. Remind them of what you have done for them lately and pursue some common future interest between all of you; being both serious and playful with your ideas.

Funny note on Firefox spell-checker
if you spell beetles like that lowercase, it's find. If you spell it beatles it marks it as mis-spelled. But if you capitalize it Beatles, it says it's correct. I thought it cool that the band name was in Firefox's Dictionary

Anyway, I'm kind of tempted to call shenanigans on this. We're not being told something. The bitterness over his brother is a big warning sign to me. Look, do you want to know why you are treated differently from your brother? Because you ARE different from your brother. That they hold you to a higher standard is, in general, a GOOD thing. They aren't doing it to be mean, but because you've clearly demonstrated the capacity to perform at a much higher level than your brother. Lose the chip on your shoulder already.
Yeah, taking away your XBox over an A- seems silly. But honestly, so does insisting you had to be in bed by 11pm. Is that your parent's rule, because you act like its yours. If its yours, guess what? You have to bend the rules sometimes. Because sometimes, you have too much on your plate and need some extra time to get it all done. That's life. We're all hit by hard days and we all have to sacrifice perfect in the name of good enough. I don't think you're parents made the right call. Maybe they should look closer at your after-school commitments if they are cutting into your homework time. That would at least address what the see as the problem. But you need to stop looking for other people to blame. Either the 26/28 was okay or it wasn't. If you are making excuses for the grade, that tells me that you agree with your parents that the score was unacceptable for you. If that's how you see it, you need to figure out what to do the next time you're in a crunch.

Look around you, talk to college graduates. Ask them how much sleep they have gotten, and 80% of them will telll you THEY GOT NO SLEEP, yet managed to graduate with top honors.
I don't know your situation, but I do know a better one. I know of a situation where a mother of 4 who's 38, went to back to school, went to work, AND had to feed 3 kids(The fourth being 20). She only got 1 hour of sleep, stayed up all night, all weekends to finish her work. Managed to ace all her classes, and got a bachelors in Sociology. She happens to be my mother, and her story is a lot more fu**ed than yours. So my point is, quit crying, you're nothing special, you're not the only one, and there's people who have more hurdles than you, yet overcomes them all.

She only got 1 hour of sleep, stayed up all night, all weekends to finish her work. Managed to ace all her classes, and got a bachelors in Sociology. She happens to be my mother, and her story is a lot more fu**ed than yours. So my point is, quit crying, you're nothing special, you're not the only one, and there's people who have more hurdles than you, yet overcomes them all.
aah, so your comparing a 15yo to a 38yo and college students. im not complaining about not having enough time, im complaining about my parents being complete tight arses over me not being able to study for one test which i got an A+ on.

It actually is a valid comparison, and in actuality it is unfair weighted in the favour of the 38 year old.
You didn't answer the question of whether or not the 11 PM lights out is your rule or your parents. If it's yours, then you have no excuse for not studying for it, and that is the point your parents are making by taking away your Xbox.
Yes, you are naturally gifted at being bright perhaps (or maybe you just got really lucky), but that doesn't mean that you can get away with not working at all, and that's what your parents are trying to instill in you. They're making sure that you don't take this one-time event out of proportion and start thinking that you don't have to work at school. That kind of attitude leads to quick slides in grades.
And if I were you, I wouldn't be complaining about sleep just yet, no matter how important it is to you right now. Once you hit University/College, you'll be pulling your fair share of all-nighters. I know I did. Grades do not come easy once you get into University, and you can expect those 95% averages to drop to around 80%, unless you work your ass off.
