View Full Version : "Rumor" News: Bye-Bye to the 360 Elite?

There's a strong rumor circulating that Microsoft will be limiting the production of the Xbox 360 Elite. It seems that retailers and customers are more interested in the Arcade and Pro versions during this economically challenging time. Fudzilla (http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12430&Itemid=1) has reported:
"The story that we are hearing goes something like this… Microsoft will stop taking orders for the Xbox 360 Elite at some point during the second quarter and allow inventory of the Elite consoles to start to run down. The majority of retailers would prefer just a low-end and a high-end console, so this change will be made during the second quarter, which is the fourth fiscal quarter for Microsoft.
Once inventory is depleted, the Elite system will move to more of a limited edition role that will be available only at select retailers, and likely only in North America and Europe. The Elite consoles that will be available in these areas sbould be more like the recent Resident Evil 5 Red Elite Limited Edition console, rather than the standard Elite package that Microsoft has offered in the past."
It's a fascinating rumor with all sorts of implications. Does this put more pressure on Sony to cut the price of the PlayStation 3? I'd say so, simply because the PlayStation 3 will no longer have competition at the same price point and general consumers will mostly see the $100 price difference between an 80GB PS3 and a 360 Pro. Does this mean that the Xbox 360 is near its saturation point with enthusiast gamers? Probably...though I'm sure a lot of enthusiast gamers went with a Pro over an Elite due to economic factors.
What do you think of the rumor? Are you going to snatch up an Elite before they get hard to find? Or are you content with a Pro or Arcade system? Do you think this move forces Sony's hand in terms of a price cut?

I just can't believe myself that there are many people that really need over 9000 memory blocks of space on their hard drive. Typically their 360 isn't their music player source, or typically people don't play every single game ever created and download every single DLC

No, but that the time the Elite was released, it was better because it ran "Quieter" and "Better" Than the pro, even with the HDMO. I.E. This is before the NXE Update.
Obviously, post-NXE makes the Pro better, and with the HDMI port now. But the 120 Gigs are great to have, especially like me when you play certain games alot and it's nice to have those games installed on the hard-drive.
It is an interesting rumor. i must say.

I have a 120 gb drive, with only 30 gb left. Most of it is video content.

I have an Elite as well, and I basically only play RB, and have every single song downloaded....and I have like 90GB free right now. So, at approx 450-500 of the songs saved on the hard drive, I have room for approx 2500 more RB songs. Obviously that's way more than enough, but that's also if I stick to strictly RB, and not factoring in any other games or downloads.

I have like 7 gigs left and I do not see me slowing down any time soon with RB DLC. I will need more gigs pretty soon.

I believe it...our Pro's disc drive stopped reading discs a few weeks ago, and rather than sending it back to Microsoft for repairs, I decided to just buy an Arcade, since we had just bought a 120GB HD. I went to the closest store that had them, Wal-Mart, and they were entirely sold out of Arcades and Pros. He tried to sell me an Elite, but I went to Game Stop instead. They mentioned that they were getting low on Arcades when the guy came out of the back with it.
I think a lot of people are in that position...if you've got a broken Xbox and a 120GB HD, it's a waste of money to get anything beside an Arcade.

You can buy 120gb HDDs >.>
They are the only ones people carry, I think. I can only find used 20gb.
On a side note, I found one of the older headsets that have the on and off switch RIGHT on the controller. I love those things.

I've been waiting to get an elite for sometime now, I just have been lacking the disposable funds to get one. But I have been itching even more to get that 120GB HDD since my stock HDD is running dangerously low on free space (1.8GB free due to loads of RB DLC!). I would have gotten myself a 120 HDD by itself a while ago but after seeing how my friend's elite system looked on his EXPENSIVE-KIND TV I totally had to have one. So it makes no sense to get a 120 GB HDD separately then buy an elite later that already comes with one. Seriously, the elite on the good equipment looks so nice I wanted to cry when I went home to my CRT TV.
I guess this news just means that I might want to bump up procuring an elite higher up on my list of priorities....

There's no pressure on Sony to cut their price, it's been in the works for a month now... The slumping economy killed the PS3 momentum over the holidays, so Sony is working towards making the 80gb PS3 $299
I bought a 360 Arcade way back in April, and it had an HDMI port... now both of my systems look fantastic on my HDTV

Ill take bugs and you know...software...over no bugs and a whopping...3 and 1/2 games worth playing
As a current owner of 12 different consoles (including all 3 current gennies), 8 if you dont cound handhelds, i would say, without hesitation, the ONLY system i own that isnt better than the Wii is the Sega Saturn.

Doesn't surprise me. The elite isn't that good a deal. $100 more for 60 more gigs of HD space? Oh, and it's black...
It simply makes more sense to get the pro and then commit the extra $100 you would have spent on the elite towards a wireless adapter and whatever other accessories you'll need.

3 of my friends that had recent issues with their 360s (only 1 RRoD, and he plays it in 8+ hour stretches) all found it was easier and less expensive to buy an Arcade.

Actually, it goes further than that... the median age of a video gamer is older than I am, and I'm nearly a decade past 16...
