According to the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/16/business/media/16adcol.html?_r=2), NBC-Universal owned Sci-Fi channel will be proposing an upcoming name change to advertisers today. The new name they picked will be "not only of sight and sound but of mind, meant to signal a channel whose boundaries are that of imagination."
The new name?
Syfy.
Why? It's all made crystal clear by this statement from NBC-Universal Cable Productions President Bonnie Hamner: “We couldn’t own Sci Fi; it’s a genre, but we can own Syfy.” Sci-Fi President Dave Howe also relayed this (apparently) positive comment from one of their focus groups: “If I were texting, this is how I would spell it.”
The switch will take place on July 7th, after which the Saturn Logo will be replaced by the slogan "Imagine Greater".
*gag*
At some point, someone is going to be watching the Syfy Channel and drinking a Mtn Dew, and then it will hit them, and they will cry for the English Language.

Syfy? Really? Decisions like this all but prove that any success that television networks have is pure, unadulterated luck.
