the impossible is about to happen... Patrick Roy's record of 551 wins as a goalie in the NHL is about to be shattered by Martin Brodeur, injuries permitting.

Tonite Marty looks for his 552nd career win when the Devils welcome the Chicago Blackhawks. whats ever more impressive is that Brods has played about 100 less career games that Roy.

People say Roy was the teacher, Brodeur the student. But i beg to differ, as Marty has developed his own goaltending style of his own. Unlike Patrick Roy, Brodeur will still be able to walk in his old age because he never utilized the butterfly style.

on a side note, 4 more shutouts and Marty will break one of Don Cherry's "Records Never To Be Broken" as claimed in Rock em Sock em 3.. which is Terry Sawchuks career shutout total of 103 regular season shutouts.

Martin Brodeur... the greatest hockey goaltender we've ever see.

Tonite is a rather momentous occasion for the NHL.

Cmon Marty, we're rootin for ya.

Is "tonite" the way Canadians spell "tonight"?

I thought Roy had some years left in him too, but he quit because he was at the very top of his career after winning the Cup with a record season.

no he didnt, he lost 2nd round to the minnesota wild in overtime, it was a huge upset victory. which set up an anahiem/minnesota western final which was *yawn* lets not get into it.... now roy coachs in the quebec junior league and his son (whoes also a goalie) is facing legal charges from a fight instigated by patrick roy (he coaches his kid).

the only thing roy has on brodeur is 1 extra stanley cup ring, but roy did it with 2 different teams.. but i think 3 cups with the same team is more impressive personally. roy never won an olympic gold either.

and its official.. marty has the record.. winning 3-2 over the hawks.. made a great kick save with about 3 seconds to go that ended the game, great performance.

I thought Roy's last season was with the Avalanche, he played after the strike was over?

his last season was with the avs, but he played 2 season after he won the cup when ray bourque was on the team in 2001... he had a great season the year after they won the cup, but the last game he played was when the avs lost to the wild in the 03 playoffs.. it was a crazy crazy event, it blew my mind i remember watching it in my first apartment sitting on dirty green leather furniture by myself. hehehe

I vividly remember his last season being the season before the strike where there was a heated rivalry between the Avalanche and the Red Wings.

I'm incredibly surprised that I missed Roy's season when I was a kid, because I was a rabid Avalanche fan. Was Sakic not on the team anymore after they won the title in 02?

sakic has never left that franchise. drafted by the nordiques and he still skates for the avs, though hes been injured alot the past few years.

I remember hearing rumors of him becoming a free agent after the title win. I guess that discouraged me and I never watched Roy's last season. I'm still baffled as to how I thought the title win was Roy's last season.

I don't get your logic here. Roy could have won with 4 different teams and it wouldn't be any less impressive. Brodeur has always played on a much stonger team than Roy. Especially the Montreal years. Roy is almost solely resposible for both the '86 and '93 cups.

Brodeur plays for a team that is amazing defensively, when he was out of the lineup this season nobody even noticed. He is not the difference maker on the Devils like Roy was with the Canadiens.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to take anything away from Brodeur. He's awesome! I'm glad he's the one to break the record. Couldn't go to a better guy. But I'll be shocked when he has more wins than Roy when Play-Off games are included in the total (that won't happen, of course).

both of those Avalanche teams were stacked big time. if he would have stayed with montreal he would have never won more than 2 cups.

and those MTL teams were hardly slouches either. the 93 team wasnt at least. Roy definately made a massive splash with his first cup win.

theyre both incredible, but marty has much much more impressive stats and trophies IMO. roy has played nearly 80 more playoff games in his career and something like 5 extra seasons.
