I'm a huge Bioware, huge RPG fan. Been wondering if anyone here has been enjoying some Mass Effect.

Normally this would have been a no-brainer, day-1 insta-purchase, but in view of a "certain other music game with highly addictive properties" I haven't had the time or motivation.

Once I have more free time around holiday vacation, I've been thinking of getting into it though. For those who aren't waiting around, are you enjoying it?

Very much. It's a slow starter. I actually stopped playing it for a couple of days because the first few hours of gameplay is wandering around a large city, and is pretty dull. But once you get past that point, it really picks up. The story is very well done.

It's going to take me forever to finish it, though. So many games, so little time.

Slow starter eh? Seems typical for the designers. I remember it took me a couple weeks to get the energy to play through the first area of Baldur's Gate 2.

YES! EVenthough I'm only a hour in I'm very much enjoying it. I meant to play more this weekend but I had two holiday parties to attend(another tomarrow night after work). I know I will finish the game but It will take time(which is why I held off on buying it in the first place. RB is still my go to game for now.

I just picked it up two days ago. I've only been playing for four hours or so, so I'm not into the thick of things yet. I was going to hold off on getting it until Christmas, playing Rock Band/Call of Duty 4 until then, but a broken guitar and broken drumset later, part of that equation was nixed for now.

All in all I really like it, I can't wait for it to pick up steam as I'm wandering around the Citadel right now. It's pretty win.

For me, I prefer actually wandering around the areas to combat. I spent the first 3-4 hours flipping through the Codex (basically like an in-game encyclopedia with vice-over), chatting people up, and messing around. For some I can see why it would be a slow-starter, but I really dig the immersion.

Baldur's Gate 2 is listed as my favorite game of all time (I'm actually casually playing through it for like the ten billionth time right now), so yeah, if you liked Bioware's other titles, you can't really go wrong.

dont have a ps3 so ill never be able to enjoy the fun that is mass affect (until it gets released on pc that is )

as a side note, two years after release, im still trying to beat FFXII. unfortunately after making excellent progress (about 2/3rds through), Rock Band was released. Since then i have been meaning to go back to it, but have yet to actually turn it on :(

Mass Effect is 360 exclusive, current news is no PC port on it. =P

I've been playing it a lot, 22 hours logged in 3 days... and making my way through. I love the RPG side of it, the combat is ok... I got my butt kicked over and over until i bought better armor. That's my one complaint, sometimes you just... die...

It may take me a while to beat though, I'm going for 100% of quests and collection things =D

I'm the exact same way. That's where most of my four hours have gone. I just run around until I get the interact icon and then just try and find out as much information I can. When I talk to people I make sure that I ask them every question to add more to the Codex and gain more XP points. That's one of my favorite parts of the game right now, I don't even really know what I'm supposed to be doing for the main storyline right now, I've just been searching around for dudes to talk to.

its the 3rd best game i have played in my life. 1st is reserved for Rock Band and 2nd is reserved for GTA IV! the only bad thing about it is the shooting i mean i shoot an alien in the head and it dont seem like he feels it he down fall he just keeps walking around for me to shoot him more!

I've been trying. I liked the start though it was very glitchy. Being out on the planets...well so far most of them have been pretty damn empty and the stuff that has been on them seems to all look the same on the inside. There might be some better ones later,I've been mostly doing the side planets and not the story ones.

The Cidatel (the first place you're in) had all kinds of sidequests and was really big and full of stuff and intresting creatures so to see the mostly empty planets and only getting to land on one per system doesn't really live up to the expectations that were set at first.

I go back to the Cidatel after just about every mission. Loved that #1 fan quest. There was a really awesome hostage situation on one of the planets at least. It's like one of those dungeon crawl RPGs where you go into the dungeon, loot a bunch of stuff then go back to the one town there is to sell the stuff and go back to get more stuff.

beileve it or not the game is still based on D&D rules. You have to increase your weapon skill and and weapon quality before headshots get more frequent. Actually I'm not even sure if the game registers headshots. Eventually I just started getting 1 hit kills on weaker enemies.

despite a completely epic story/combat/etc i still have it as my #2 game of the year. normally i hate it when a game is more valuable for MP but COD4's multiplayer is just sooooo epic and the single player is pretty good (while it lasts :)) for it not be game of the year

but about mass effect it is a slow starter but i liked it. KOTOR II starts the same way with a completely boring ass "level" where you fix up your ship as the r2d2 ****, so mass effect's slow start wasn't surprising to me.

my cousin was telling me about a bunch of **** that i didn't think would happen in this game, so its making me wanna start a second "career" once my finals are done with

Various reviews I've read have pointed out that the game has its share of glitches and that it is pretty obvious that chunks of storyline were cut out late in production. Does the rest of the game outweigh those flaws? Based on the reviews, it appears so, but are those flaws as obvious as the reviews make it seem?

I'll get it eventually, but between Rock Band and the stack of unopened games sitting in a box in my closet (mostly RPGs so it'll take a while to play them all), I'm in no rush to drop $60 on it right now.

the glitches and **** never bugged me but apparently rock_starman (i think it was him) had **** happened to him so idk.

but yeah this game demolsished everything in sight

Yea I frequently get stuck on nothing at all while crossing a bridge in the Ciditel, have to save and reload or crouch to move.

Got stuck in a rock on a planet and couldn't move at all. Saved and reloaded only to have Ashley stuck in it too and couldn't get either out.

Then there was the missing rewards when I reloaded a mission to do it a different way then went back to doing it the first way.

The Mako just randomly tipped over once, hasn't since so I think that was a glitch.

Started saving before and after doing anything and it's dealable with.

Mass Effect is pretty amazing. I'd say it follows really solidly in the tradition of KOTOR, as far as how it plays at least. Mechanics are obviously different, and of course, there aren't Jedi running around, but it still feels a lot like KOTOR, which is a great thing in my book. I haven't had any problems with it glitching, so I can't comment on that.

I've completely stopped playing Rock Band for this game, lol. Harmonix and BioWare clearly should've given each other a wide berth on their release dates ;).

What's the "#1 fan" quest you guys keep mentioning? Haven't run into this one yet.

Even better than the fan quest:

*SPOILERS and lots of 'em*

I shot an innocent person in the head.
Left what seemed to be ally prisoners in their cells.
Nuked an entire planet while leaving one of my people behind.
Wouldn't accept the call from the superiors after it.
Supported a racist presidential candiate.
Gave a depressant to a guy that wanted a stimulant so he wasn't able to work and will likely be fired.
Made the antagonist commit suicide.
Left the superiors to die.
Chose to have humans take over the galaxy with none of the other races getting a say.

And that was just the last 4 hours,it lasted 59.

Now to go again and be nice about it. :D
This time I won't shoot the hostages myself.

I died on the first mission, sat there blinking at the screen, and haven't touched it since.

Not because I died, but because I haven't really had a good chance to sit down with it since and try and see if the AI listens to my commands to find cover instead of flying in balls to the wall and eating rockets and projectile weaponry in the face. :/

First mission? How'd that happen?

I did a lot of sidequests and cleared the game with the "being a good guy ending" and it took about 15 hours. It was an overall good experience with a great story but I didn't think I would go through all that again so I traded it at GameStop. I give it 8 out of 10. (I would give it more but I don't see the replay value)

First mission? How'd that happen?

I got to the OMG BOMBS part, disarmed the first one, and went up the ramp and started getting shot. I hit the thing to tell my team to 'take cover' and I started slinking around and picking people off. I got to the guy that shoots rockets or whatever and took him out (having to dodge one rocket). The guy that was with me at the start died and when I looked at my radar he was way out there, and I took a bunch of damage from something -- I do not know what. I peeked around the corner and saw the girl running backwards towards me from the other side of the area (I was on, say, the east side and she was running from the west towards me across a platform) and then she died.

So here I was with a little bit of health left and a bunch of people firing pew pew pew lasers at me. I killed a bunch and one guy was left and he finished me off.

I cried a little, but it was 4 AM so I just went to bed instead of retrying it.

Edit: They were also very dumb and took stupid amounts of damage when we were running along the train cart by standing in the middle of the aisle instead of hiding and taking shots of opportunity/moving while I was laying down some cover fire.

I'm working on the side quests at the moment. It's a really interesting game. Though I haven't been playing it much since I got Rock Band. I've been a fan of BioWare games since Baldur's Gate, so this was a must buy for me.

Wow, i am really stoked there are so many good things about Mass Effect. Cant wait to play it after the holidays. My buddy has been playing it solid for a while and loves it as well.
