While the ION is compatible in GHWT, they have dumbed down the charts to 4 channels, not the 5 for GHWT. I would suspect they would do the same for Metalica since they have provided no response since thier patch which severely reduced the ION functionality in GHWT.
That said, you could get a real drum brain and route it through the GHWT MIDI in on a GHWT drum kit.

That's good news, I wasn't gonna buy it but now I will. Thanks for the heads up

Hold on... that chart says that on the PS3, the Ion drum rocker works with GHWT... last I knew, my kit didn't work with GHWT. When I hit a certain pad, it basically pauses the song saying "reconnect the kit." Anyone else have this issue, and what's the fix?

Anyone know if the Fender bass controller will work on GH:M?
I'm not giving my hopes up but that'd be awesome.

Nevermind, I figured out how to get the ION kit to work with GHWT for the PS3. Basically, unplug the cymbals and use only the 4 pads and kick pedal. I suppose if you wanted to use the cymbal(s) instead you can just hook the cymbal into the corresponding pad input.

So......does the ION kit have a double bass pedal?? Can you use the GH pedal with it, or do you have to buy a separate double bass pedal with the ION kit??
I'm not sure how they work.

It does have a double bass, which can be used for expert +, but you can't use the GH pedal as they work on different technical systems.

So you have to buy the double bass?? That sucks.

You would have to buy several things to get that to work, actually. First you'd need an Ion Twin Rocker ($25), and then you'd need 2 other pedals because the Ion stock pedal doesn't work with the Twin Rocker.
The PDP double kick adapter doesn't function well with the Ion drum set.

I have an Ion. It works great with the demo. I'm sure the same applies to the final game.

So are we saying that GH:M will have 'Full' ION support with cymbals and all?
If so i've just wasted my time and money hacking apart a GH:WT kit for the midi parts lol

Ions are not fully functioning on either GH:WT or GH:M.
Still has the game reduced by one less lane of notes.
PS3 still have the issue with disconnects when hitting cymbals.
Not sure what the poster mean by support with cymbals and all though. Xbox360 version always allowed cymbals to work. Might want to clarify?

I was just checking if IONS would have the 5 lanes as standard on GH:M. without the DM5/midi mod
Basically hoping i hadnt wasted my time and money doing the mod, which i havent :)
Cool thanks

What mod are you speaking of? Did you purchase a GHWT drum kit and just hook your ION kit into the DM5 brain and use a MIDI cable to plug it into the GHWT kit?
Also, FYI for those looking for a somewhat cheap double-bass pedal for the ION, Sigler Music has the Roadie2 kit that gives you a 2nd pedal, coupler and some cables to hook it all up. The only caveat (sp) to that is that you have to tell them you have an ION kit and need two additional cables (the second 1/8" to 1/4" cable AND a 1/4" Mono to 1/4" Stereo cable). I didn't know about the stereo to mono cable, but had I asked sigler for it, am sure they would have given it to me.

Ok, so after extensive studying of my options, I think that I want the following setup:
ION Drum Rocker
ION Twin Rocker splitter (from Omega Pedals' website, right?)
2x Rock Pedal
The whole point of getting the whole kit above is to deal with the crazy stuff in GH:M's Expert Plus. I know I'll lose the orange lane, but I've always been playing RB anyways and I have no idea what I'll be missing.
So with that in mind, can someone enlighten me as to the potential drawbacks of using a ION + double pedal setup with GH:M? Sounds like the cymbals provide a problem on PS3 (which I'm using)... but I would like to hear more than one definitive report from people who're playing GH:M with an ION and can tell us for sure.
PS: I don't care if the above setup doesn't work with GH:WT, as I don't plan to own WT. GH: Metallica will probably be the only GH game I ever own unless Activision wises up and makes GH: Dream Theater... *dreams on*

OK, after trawling on Google and the GH:M forums (ugh), I concluded that the only way I'm gonna be able to use the ION in close-to-full cymbal glory is this:
Buy a 2-to-1 mono splitter in order to provide split inputs for the drum port from both the drum plug and cymbal plug. The cymbal port will be left open. Repeat this for all 3 cymbals.
My educated guess is that if I were to use the above setup in RB, it would still be compatible in terms of gameplay - just that I'd lose the ability of the IONs to provide dedicated sounds for the cymbals and drums.
Anyone know if all the stuff I proposed is correct or a good idea at all? Am I really missing out on anything by not having the orange lane to play with?

What you proposed will work to let you use your cymbals as duplicates of the drum pads, but it still won't give you the orange lane in GH:WT. At its heart, the Ion controller is still an RB controller, and GH will never give RB controllers the 5th lane.

You can get an expasion for the Ion with two pedals. It works perfectly fine, my friend is playing it right now.

Thanks, David. I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't run into the whole "OMG PS3 cymbals incompatible with GH!!111 suxx0rzzz" thing by applying the 2-to-1 mono splitter workaround.

Yeah, you can manage to get something not bad with your ION using splitters. Though you miss dedicated cymbal sounds. And that you don't really need the yellow pad.
My setup included 1 HH, 2 left cymbals and 2 right cymbals. Actually my HH and 2 cymbals are all hooked up in the yellow cymbal port using 2 splitters. Both blue cymbals are hooked using one splitter.
Using this, the yellow pad has no use, probably because the GW kit has only 3 pads. To avoid getting to the floor tom, I just hooked up the yellow pad to the blue pad port and the blue pad to the green pad port. Makes it a bit more natural but take a while getting used to, because when you see green notes you hit the blue pad.
Using this fills completely sucks because you're left with only 4 "notes".
It's ok because it's Metallica, but I miss the Rockband gameplay a lot. Won't be long before I switch back to RB IMO.
