First and foremost, though, you'll enjoy the level of control you have by leaving your shoes off when you drum... you'll have less of a chance in breaking yours due to use of excessive pressure.
The quick preventative is as follows... (just remember this fix won't help if your pedal is already busted). Explaining how to do it takes longer than actually doing it, I promise...
(1) purchase a wooden dowel rod (1/2" - 5/8" in diameter) from the WAL*MART craft section (or other local craft/hardware/lumber store)... make sure to also have some silicone-based craft cement on hand, too, also available at those places. Grab some protective felt pads of the same diameter while you're there. All these items will cost you less than $5 total (with enough material left over to fix 2 dozen more drum pedals) if you don't already have one or more around the house or workshop out back.
(2) Saw off two small wooden dowel rod pieces , both 15 centimeters in length, and sand until smooth (you can paint these black, if you wish, to match the pedal color, but you'll never see them anyway unless you look underneath)... I'll refer to these 2 pieces as "SPACERS"... Top-off each SPACER with a protective felt pad to smooth the point of contact, if you wish (I recommend it).
(3) Using a dab of silicone-based glue/cement on one end of each SPACER, secure the SPACERS to the underside of the pedal (the flimsy section, not the base) on either side of the spring-rest (you'll be able to remove them completely with no residue if you should need to, as silicone based glue is strong, flexible, and removable in most cases). The spacers should fit fine between the black criss-cross "support-webbing". Keep your pedal turned upside down while the glue dries, or they'll fall right off if not clamped.
That's it... The SPACERS will prevent further bending of the pedal beyond it's stop-point... any excessive pressure you apply should get absorbed by the spacers and prevent the pedal from bending along that pressure point. What I'm basically doing is adding a couple extra feet similar to the black rubber stops already installed further up the pedal.
Hope that helps someone avoid a hassle...
Added note: you can even add one or two more similar SPACERS along the central axis (lengthwise) for even better added support.
