View Full Version : How many languages do you speak?
Lily_Mu

I speak 3: English, Spanish and French.
And I took 1 year of Italian.
What about you?
EDIT: It's multiple choice because that way, you can choose a number of languages and indicate if you understand others.

Depends what you mean by "speak." There's competent enough for some speaking, and then there's fluency.

I am afraid I only speak one language, that is Southern Draw English.

English is the only one I speak fluently.
Language I know second most is Japanese, where I can't read it well but I'm reasonable with the spoken language. Meaning if someone plopped me in the middle of Japan I'd be able to figure out how to get around by talking to people. I'm familiar with a lot of Japanese customs and mannerisms and rules of etiquette and such too, which is nice.
Then there's Spanish, which I took 3 years of in high school but I can only remember a handful of words. Hey, it's been almost 10 years since I used any of it. :p

I speak English, but I took two years of French. I know enough about the bases of the Romance languages, so I can get the gist of Spanish and Italian as well. I also know some very basic Russian...I just haven't had the patience to sit down and learn all their grammar rules.

Well I can kind of speak Spanish. But I'm fluent in reading sheet music in both Treble and Bass clef and lead sheets too. I know some Italian because of it. I'm a music guy so I'm not sure if sheet music counts.

I don't think "mezzo piano" or "sforzando" would do you too much good if you were stranded in Italy...

I can understand most Russian, but I cant speak too much of it. Came in handy at the pet store, not at CVS. It's a lot easier to say "your cat needs a better kind of food" based on pieces you've picked up over the past 21 years than "ear infection drops are in aisle 7"

It means she either learned it in an anal school (where they teach EVERYTHING), she learned in Spain, or she learned in Argentina or Paraguay.
I learned Spanish when I was stationed in Colombia and Paraguay and can still hold a conversation even though it's been 10+ years since I lived there. My accent is bad now and my grammar has deteriorated dramatically. I can still understand and read it fine though. I could pick up Italian and French relatively (to a non-romance language) easily also.
Spanish, for an American at least, is EXTREMELY useful. It should be required in all U.S. schools from 1st grade on.

Well..... I speak English...
I understand Spanish fairly well, but I can't speak it very well. I've been responding to Spanish phrases from my mom my whole life without realizing it. I used to understand the fantasy language Sindarin from the Lord of the Rings. I never needed those Elvish translation subtitles. But I forgot it all.
I plan on taking Latin next year. Don't give me the "dead language" crap, it's immortal. xD
