View Full Version : PS2 version able to be used on PS3?

I saw this on a couple old articles - that the PS2 version would be "upgrade ready" so that if you upgraded your PS2 to a PS3, you wouldn't have to buy a new rock band bundle. Does anyone have confirmation of that? That would be really fantastic if it were true, because it would mean my friends with PS2s would be able to bring their guitar over to my place to play (and might hasten their buying of a PS3 if it means they'll be able to download content at that time).

I tried search, but it won't let you search for 3 letter words, which pretty much rules out PS2 and PS3 :/

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the peripherals are going to be USB. So wired guitar, as well. And I think I heard that they would work/be identical to the PS3 instruments, so if someone does upgrade to the PS3, they'd only need to purchase the game.

Again, this is not confirmed.

Wouldn't that mean that PS2 owners would then need some sort of adapter to plug it into their console? I thought my PS2 (original design, not slim) had 0 USB ports :)

Edit: replaced the word 'know' with 'thought'

Why would they need to buy the game? If they buy an 80 or 60 GB PS3 it should be backwards compatible. However since the price drop a lot of 40 GB (not backwards compatible) have been flying off the shelves so in that case, yes, a new game game would be needed.

The PS2 version would not support online or DLC.

Duh. Sorry. My bad. I shouldn't eat, think, and type at the same time.

It will come with a USB hub.
Also, your PS2 has USB ports.
ALL of them do. Every. Single. PS2. Has. USB. Ports.

Yup. Even the launch-day Phat PS2 that I got had bluish USB ports...just not in a really obvious place (though they were on the front).

My guess is that only the microphone will be interchangeable.

I would be surprised if the PS3-controller/instruments worked on the PS2 because they are designed to give the same signals that a ps3 sixaxis does.

If they do work, then I might even pick up a 2nd copy of RockBand for the PS2 (just the game disc)... at least i'll be able to have 2-guitars on it (assuming the old GH guitars work for it)

It's been confirmed that the guitars are interchangeable as well. I'm still not completely sure on the drums though.

Settle down, Beavis. :p I sold my PS2 a few days ago to recoup the money I spent on RB, so I couldn't go look at it anymore when I posted that today :)

Umm, no, it had 2 on the front. It's where the SOCOM headset plugged in to and the EyeToy...

Not that I'm trying to say don't trust anyone in this thread, but I would not believe anything about compatibility unless it says in big bold letters on the box or on the main RB website that the ps2 bundle works with the ps3 game (Or vise versa if need be..)

We don't want another LP insident where the box/website says it should work with some unspoken wink wink other console which is assumed to be ps3.. But when it comes out, we find out that it does not work.. When asked what's up, we find out that we are just confused little customers that don't understand what we are doing and that the box really means it's built to a open standard that some future console could use if they wanted to someday.

Anyway, it would be awesome if it was as I have ps2 buddies that could bring their stuff over to battle with.. But, don't count on it unless someone can point to some official statement somewhere on the main RB website.

I've posted a news post on here a couple times from joystiq saying the ps2 guitar works on the ps3,Its the same guitar...So far thats the only thing confirmed.Im going to ASSUME that the drums and mic will work since they are usb also.

Sounds really promising! Hopefully my PS2 buddies will buy it, and we can try out full 4 person bands and even drum battles......

I wouldn't get the PS2 version, because it won't support DLC, which would kill RB with the few number of songs.

I asked this question of Harmonix and I was first told that it should work. Should work? Well, shouldn't they KNOW if it will work? So I emailed them again and got a reply that only the microphones would work from PS2 to PS3 to XBox 360 as long as there were the appropriate USB hookup. I was told that no other instuments are transferrable between different systems (even PS2 to PS3). The controllers (guitar and drums) communicate at different frequencies and would not be compatible.

Stolen Virtue, would you mind posting those emails on here? I'd probably make a new thread about it, too. That's a pretty newsworthy email if that rep was correct.

It looks like they were EA representatives. But sure, here are the 2 emails with the reply's:

I have Rock Band for my PS3. My friend is thinking of getting Rock Band for his PS2. Will the guitar from the PS2 version work with my PS3? Will my PS3 guitar work with his PS2? Are the drums and mic interchangeable? Thanks.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting EA Technical Support. I understand you would like to know if the peripherals for Rock Band for the Playstation 2 would be compatible with the Playstation 3?

Rock Band should be compatible with most third party peripherals. While the Rock Band hardware is the only hardware guaranteed to work with the game, Harmonix has an open platform philosophy of enabling the Rock Band Software to work with as many third party peripherals as possible.

While no detailed information has been released regarding the Playstation 2's peripherals, it may be more likely that the PS2 instruments may be more compatible with the PS3 rather than the other way around due to the wireless nature of the Playstation 3. However, since there is no sufficient information, this is speculation at the very best.

I hope that this helps answer your question. If you have any other questions, then by all means feel free to let us know. You can also refer to our extensive Self Help Knowledgebase at http://support.ea.com for common technical questions.

I wrote this previous Question to you and I question the answer I received:

"I have Rock Band for my PS3. My friend is thinking of getting Rock Band for his PS2. Will the guitar from the PS2 version work with my PS3? Will my PS3 guitar work with his PS2? Are the drums and mic interchangeable? Thanks."

I was told that it probably would work and that it may require a 3rd party adapter. OK, isn't the Rock Band for the PS3 and Rock Band for the PS2 made by the same company? Shouldn't Harmonix KNOW if the ROCK BAND PS2 guitar will work with the ROCK BAND PS3 guitar? They are both the same company! There shouldn't be "probably" or any guess work. Doesn't Harmonix have a PS3 and a PS2 there and can plug their own Rock Band guitars into? For that matter, will the XBox 360 Rock Band guitars work with either the Bock Band for PS2 or PS3?

Hello!

Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts Technical Support. I understand that you're having a controller issue with Rock Band. I do apologize for the inconvenience.

Regarding this issue, the PlayStation 3 version guitar is not compatible with the PlayStation 2, as the PlayStation 3 controller uses a different controller setting and frequency from the PlayStation 2.

Should you require further assistance about this or any Electronic Arts game in the future, please visit our website and review our extensive Self Help Knowledgebase (http://support.ea.com).

Thank you!

Also, I was unable to post (as it was a phone call) the reply that only the microphone would be transferrable between the 3 systems (PS2, PS3 and XBox 360) as long as it is USB. However, guitar and drums won't work from other systems. I will try to get it in email so it is more official.

Well, I'd wait for an official announcement before jumping to conclusions. The question the EA rep answered for you was "Is my PS3 Strat compatible with the PS2." Which is no, you can't use your wireless Strat to play GH2. However, the PS2 Strat will be wired (I believe), so there certainly is a chance it'll work with the PS3.

I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.
