Also: To those who saw the post to "another rock band mod site" to buy higher priced of the same items, turns out the post and the post which stated "he had just bought them from the site and it seemed legit" was actually posted by the owner of the site itself. Thanks to MrE for the lookup!

First: Thanks to CigDangle for the awesome mod! Here is a link on how to do it yourself.
http://generationgamerz.com/v2/insight/time-for-rock-band-arts-crafts.php
Here is pictures of my CigDangle Drum Silencer Mod.
The mod works great, I did both versions to see which I personally liked better.
They lower the sound by about 40% depending on your drum style.
I have not found at any time that the drums do not respond just like before and the bounce back is 99% the same and sometimes even better.

There is another alternative. Scott Johnson (AKA. ScoJo) produces a pair of rubber tipped sticks made for practice. I have these for my set and they work wonderfully. Look about half-way down the page in the link to find them.

how do they feel? the dimensions make it seem long and thick compared to the plain sticks that come with the game.

15 each? why on earth when it costs like 6 dollars to make them yourself?? Everyone has a michaels near them and i did mine near perfect just using a sheet of paper and tracing the drum head a couple of times until i got it right. past that its just sticking the foam and felt onto the heads. 15 dollars is a rip off (I am not flaming, just saying)
some people will pay extra to have others take care of the hassle.
like going to a restaurant when you dont feel like cooking. going to a shop and have them change your oil when you can do it yourself.
i dont have a michaels near me and would have considered paying for his set, but i want mines to cover the whole pad in black. i dont need the colored rings.

As he said, I'm not in this for "a business" I just had extra material so I made a few sets. Plus it costs 15$ JUST for the circle cutter, so 15$ for cutter & 9$ for materials not to mention the 30mins it takes to do it. Its just as a convenience.
Note: You could do it by tracing and not using the circle cutter, but I have already seen 20 other people on these forums go out and buy the circle cutter for just ONE single time use. Just trying to help others save the cash.
"Vacuum"
LOL all the white specs on the floor are from me making the pads, because the plastic slices off a bit when you use the cutter.

I saw those a while ago and just made my own. I spent a total of $9.23 and just used a bowl in my kitchen that was the right size and cut them out using kitchen shears. I couldn't find the adhesive foam rubber, so I just bought some good mousepads. They work really well.

...
without paying $15.

Yeah, there has been tons of different mods I have seen so far myself too. I just saw alot of people having trouble getting certain materials etc. So I made some available.
Without paying 15$
And as I was replying to someone else's email, you can typically only buy the foam in packs of 12, so the total cost for materials is around 14$ not including the 15$ circle cutter (if you choose to go that route).
I think its a pretty fair deal for a finished product.

My Michaels had the foam and felt pads sold seperately, I threw this together for about 7.50 or so (cost of living I guess, was cheaper at my local michaels for some reason). They aren't professionaly cut by any means, and I did have some issues w/ air bubbles, but I took care of that and they work great. The irregular cutting hasn't disrupted my rocking at all.

I still have about 5 black sets left if you are interested!
I have been shipping with USPS so its about 4-5day ship to anywhere in US.

I was actually able to get my materials at my local Wal-Mart. They had the adhesive foam in packs of 6 and 12, but they did sell the adhesive felt individually. I opted for the compass/scissors route to save a bit of cash.
And maybe it's just me, but I actually like the look of the neon color rings against the black felt. It kinda resembles the frets buttons on the Guitar Hero III Les Paul. With almost a sort of "glowing" effect.

Yeah, I went to Michael's and bought:
12-pack of adhesive foam pads for $8
circle cutter for $6.50
5 sheets of adhesive felt for $5
Total = $8+$6.50+$5+tax= about $21
I wanted 5 sheets of the felt in case I messed up, but found out I can cut 2 circles from 1 sheet (at 7" diameter). So now I have plenty more materials in case those pads crap out and I have to replace them.
But, yeah, $15 is a fairly good price. You gotta pay him for his work, man!

I have seen people selling them on ebay for 25-35$ One guy even named his and claims his name is "trademarked" and everyone else is fakes!
Also: I still have more to sell, very many people have been interested so if you want color or black let me know! Price is still 15$ + shipping (avg 3$-5$ to 48 us)
I can ship international, have already sent out 2 international sets! So email me if you want more info on shipping charges for that.
Thanks!

I have to say it's super cool of Josh to do these, and his price is excellent. Anyone that thinks having someone else do this work for them and that it's overpriced is nuts. Specialized labor usually pays $20-$30 per hour at least. This is a great deal.
I checked out my local JoAnn and Michael's and was unable to find all the components necessary to do it myself. Since it would've cost me over $20 to make them on my own, this is awesome.

Hey all,
I just received one of Taintsaw's sets in the mail and I couldn't be happier. They arrived earlier than expected, in perfect condition, and all I had to do was peel off the backing and slap em on the drumkit.
They look and work great and saved me the humiliation of trying to cut anything with scissors.
If you are arts-and-crafts challanged like I am, I highly recommend taking advantage of this!

there are OTHER hobby places in town im sure. You can even go to wally world and get the materials to make this people.
seriously, not everyone has a store that supplies these materials for the same price. i went to a couple craft stores and walmart to look for these damn things. i finally found the foamies for 99 cents a sheet at one store, and sticky felt for $1.49 a sheet at a different store (i think i probably paid more for these than anyone here). that's already $10. that doesnt account for the time and gas spent looking for these things. but i did it anyway since my girlfriend had the circle cutter already. if i had to buy that, it wouldve cost me a lot more. if i didnt have the circle cutter i probably would have saved myself the trouble and shelled out $15. nothing wrong with a guy making a little off his time and effort to save us the trouble. why would anyone do this for no profit (unless they make only one or two for a friend, like i am)?
he's not spamming the boards selling these, so i have no problem. i'll make a stink if i see him advertising in every single drum thread.
also to taintsaw:
http://www.usps.com/shipping/flatrate.htm
that way you can keep your shipping price consistent, and it's pretty quick too since it's priority.

For me it was just about convienience. Yeah I can drive to the store, get the materials, drive home, spend time cutting and attaching and cutting and gluing...
Or for an entirely reasonable price I can get a set made for me that arrives at my door all set and ready to be used..
I can make my own hamburgers too, that doesn't stop me from eating at Wendy's. :)
Seriously, I almost consider this a public service. I am glad people have stepped up to make mods like these (and the pedel mods) available for purchase.

And people here are posting complaining about 19$ after shipping? (BTW: I use paypal for payment as well)
I don't know if any of you have seen the ebay ones by a guy who claims his are "trademarked" called Drumshhh but its hilarious. He claims he gets all of his fabric precut and that its not from craft stores. Its quite the giggle.
But oh well, business is business!

I did the mod, and I'm happy with the results. It makes them a little quieter...drums are still noisy, but at least it dampened it, and it looks good with black felt, showing just the colored rings. Used a cutter with a 6.5 inch circle template.
I couldn't find foam with adhesive backing, that would have been easier, but I got some sheets of double-sided adhesive and that worked well enough to secure the foam to the drums. Posters who said that double sided tape doesn't work are correct....I had to use my circle cutter on the double sided sheets of adhesive and use the sheets between the foam and drums to get them to stay put. You really need some sort of sticking between the entire surface of the drum and the foam, and the sheets are probably better than using some sort of glue.
Great mod, thanks for the instructions.

I made my own custom mods, tried the foam and felt pads from michaels and didn't dig em. I said screw it and went to samash and bought 4 drum silencers (http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?ItemPos=11&TempID=2&DepartmentID=4&STRID=145840&CategorySubID=1028&CategoryID=1028&BrandID=0&CategorySubPriceRangeID=0&pagesize=10&SortMethod=2&Method=3&PriceRangeID=0&SearchPhrase=&Contains=&Search_Type=Department&GroupCode=&categorysubsearch=true) cut them out with the circle cutter and taped them on. Cost me 30 not including the cutter but the sound reduction has to be at least 80%. I was banging on em at 2 am last night with no complaints. I was getting mad bounce from the soft rubber as well. I'll post a thread with pics later if theres enough interest.

In response to the comment about getting banned for advertising.
In all honestly all I was doing was putting this link up to sell extra materials I had for a low cost. I have had over 40 orders sent out already with 3 sent internationally. All I have done is just kept the same forum. I have not advertised, spammed, or posted my product anywhere else except a couple on ebay.
I could see if I was being obnoxious with it, but I'm just helping people out.
A guy from Rome Italy bought 2 sets today and wanted them UPS Expressed to Rome! It was over 100$!!!!
So clearly their is people who live in areas that do not have the materials available to them and/or view 5$ over the price of materials worth it for a finished product. (Not including gas costs!)
So Thanks to everyone who has purchased them so far through here or taken interest in them!

No but seriously,
I did attempt to advertise on this thread, but let me explain a little about the level of professionalism I am taking.
Due to the great response I have received from Rock Band players all over the world, I have developed a professional relationship with two direct distributors of product I use to manufacture my product.
The process being used to create the mod in the end is similar, and I am committed to making all customers happy.
If you are looking to get a professional product, backed by paypal, and through a direct website manufacturing and providing a product, please feel free to visit my site.
www.rockbanddrumpads.com
Regardless, there is enough of a demand for a professionally created product, that it is unnecessary to advertise by acting as a customer. I'm sure you can find plenty of them throughout the web.

Not only was speed of shipment and communication fantastic, the product / service provided is well worth the small investment.
I want to thank you for taking the time to do the research, cutting, and mailing required to make this a great experience.

for all black heads, did you just cut the circles smaller and leave the original color on the pads showing?
Taintsaw
12-13-2007, 02:53 PM
Yup, you got it!
However I typically use the exact same color foam on about 80% of the black drum pads. (Due to the way the foam company packages the pads I sometimes am forced to either use black or another dark color).
So I have seen others make the actual ffoam the color, and decrease the size of the black circle and let the foam color show through. i don't know how much that effects playing though.

I have a question for some of the modders here..
Do you find that you like the result of the standard, darker felt colors as the top layer of the mod as opposed to the brightly colored foam pads as the top layer?
My findings is that the foam provides a much more brilliant look and seems to look quite a bit cleaner.

Yes, I agree the black looks better. However demand would show otherwise. More then 65% of the orders so far have been color.

Actually Josh,
You should <a href="http://www.rockbanddrumpads.com">look a little closer</a>. Every set of pads we provide come as a complete color set WITH a complete black set.
The customer has the option to use the four brightly colored pads:
<a href="http://www.rockbanddrumpads.com">http://www.knowyourcode.com/Unrelated/rockband/images/stories/closeColors400x300.jpg</a>
Or the four brightly colored pads WITH four black pads:
<a href="http://www.rockbanddrumpads.com">http://www.knowyourcode.com/Unrelated/rockband/images/stories/closeBlackAndColors400x300.jpg</a>
Every set comes with everything you need to create either look...
And, I find it interesting how so many modders on the forums will sit here and bring a legitimate business down by bashing on it and then turn around and continue to HAWK their own product which is similar, but only differs by price and medium through which they're sold.
I mean I'm not hating on anyone making money through these means, I just wish all the other modders would stop hating on me.
After all, I have a real site and a real business backing my product and all you have is an email address :)

After all, I have a real site and a real business backing my product and all you have is an email address :)
its because you falsely represented yourself and your company to this forum and its members. Only one to blame is yourself
most of us "haters" won't be satisfied until you are permanently banned

And to that I pose the question:
"Are the other forum members here that have been incessantly praising, thanking, and encouraging customers to buy your pads REALLY all customers?"
Doubtful. I'm sure you have all signed up under different name, different emails and posted like you were one of your MANY satisfied customers.
Your probably just not too stupid to use the same name in several places as I was.
Nonetheless, same ****, different toilet.
Stop the hate. There's plenty of demand here for good product.
Create good product, you will see success..

First off, I ain't on here trying to sell anything. I didn't place an order for drum pads either. I made my own pads which slightly differs from the method used by most, including you.
Second, you are the only ass on here who was/is trying to deceive people.
Like I've said before, I would never had had any issues or complaints about you had you not try to pull the little stunt that you did. You immediately lost my respect and you will never get it back. You had your chance to represent yourself and your company in an honest manner and chose to take the deceiving route. Hope you've learned from this and will not try to take advantage of your potential customers trust in the future.
It's the basic set with a place to hold sticks WOW.
pssst... Masuyo,
This guy isn't selling drum kits, he is selling the mod pads. Also, all the drum kits have a place to hold the sticks. Pull out the tabs behind the yellow and blue pads ;)

Just a reminder, a website only takes a few hours to make. Not to mention that you accept payment through "Paypal"
Just incase you didn't know. Paypal is "Just an email" as you have claimed. Its just money payed through a service exactly like I'm doing.
Not to mention, you were the only one foolish enough to post as your own customer. That in your own right ruins your integrity.
The people who post here either were people who bought pads off me, or just other posters standing up for their opinions. Nothing more. No one was trying to be fake.

You assume everyone else is lying because you're a liar, that's all. You also believe that if other people are lying, it's somehow excuseable for you to lie. You are rationalizing your poor character with faulty logic.

Hey, I just got Joshs pad in the mail, and they are great! They really quiet the drums down and still feel good to hit. And the guy sent them fast which is also awesome. Thanks Josh!

What size do you cut the pads at? I have all the material to make them, I just can't measure the drums since they're rapped up for christmas. I'd like to have them ready christmas morning so I can just stick them on and get drumming. :)

Using the black I cut at about 6.5, about 7 if going with color. Those are approximates though.

Hey Everyone,
Just wanted to let you know, that I just ordered these pads, and they are great!! Josh was good about communicating, and shipping them out quickly. All I had to do was open the envelope, unpeel the backing and stick them on my drums. I was amazed how much quieter they were, much quieter then I expected, then I was curious how they would affect two things:
Sensor Sensitiviy
Drum Stick Bounce Back
To my liking, both things are great, and I think personally the drum sticks may bounce even better now, and the sensitivity is definitely unchanged! I play mostly on HARD, and lately expert level, so I gave them a good test, and my Wife and I really like them!!
Thanks Josh!!

Just wanted to express my thanks to CigDangle for brainstorming this mod, and to Taintsaw for posting a link to it.
My son and I managed to fabricate and install this mod in about 15 minutes last night. What a difference... no more TAP TAP TAP and having to crank my surround receiver up 3/4 of the way to just to be able to hear the music.
Anyway, this is highly recommended to all, whether you live in an apartment or not. Kudos all around, thanks again!

Obviously you can make your own, but CigDangle / Taintsaw realizes the mindset of some people. I mean, some people are willing to pay someone to make something they could make on their own for less and spend more just because of the convenience. It's the reason we have restaurants and 7-Elevens. Sure, the price seems outrageous, but hey, you can't blame someone for trying to make some money off some lazy people. :)
I just wrapped some pieces of scrap cloth around my drumstick tips and used rubberbands to keep them in place.

Good Morning,
Just wanted to post an update that I'm still shipping out both Color & Black pads. So if you are interested just follow the directions on the front page in order to purchase. You can also purchase through ebay if you like. Contact me hudock@gmail.com if you would like a direct link to an ebay post.
Hope everyone had a good holiday and anyone who didn't have a Rockband, now does!

Hey, cool! I'm glad to know someone is offering these pads at a less ridiculous price. I saw the website a few days ago, and found the price to be absolutely ridiculous. This is the real stop for those "in the know". I still need to check the local stores and see if I can find the materials for these, but if I can't get what I need here, I'll definitely order from you. Hope more people find out about this better deal. ;)

I just gotta say, bad advertising. But to all the people who say companies don't advertise in deceitful ways? what do you think jingles are for? to get em stuck in your head. Along with subliminal messages, and lies. Hell, no offense to EA, but EA is one of the gods of evil man..lol (along with McDonalds, Wal-Mart, Nike, list goes on)

Oh yea, and also, the website in no way possible took an hour. He used go daddy, so its about 5 minutes for the setup process. And by the looks of the site, its a pre-set kit, so thats another 5. A good web dev (like me ;) ) could've made that in notepad in 5 minutes, and the images in 3 in photoshop. Just because you got a website doesnt make you professional....do you know HOW MANY clan sites there are on the internet for video games?...seriously...oh yea, and like the other guy said...dude its paypal, thats another 5 minutes of setup, and anyone and their hookers can get a paypal snd/rcv acct. On that note...DONT LIE!!!
P.S.why doesnt someone make an OPEN rockband mod site, where people can sell, show, and make tut's on their mods. Wouldnt take long, and theres some good pre-kits out there that can do it all, and make it quick, like Nuke-Evolution (nukeevolution.com) all you need is a server, and those arent expensive, i personally own 12. :|. Just an idea, MSG me if you want to do it and need help, and i can hook you up...think about it, ad on the left, ad on the right...and the server would pay for itself, while you get all the praise from the rockband modders...im so smart sometimes i scare myself ;)

FWIW, I run a small gaming community site, and a bunch of us are nuts over Rock Band. I'd found that site that sells the drum mods and actually posted it in my forums as a good solution for people. Then I found this thread, and saw that stunt the owner pulled. Slimy. So I deleted it from my own website and will warn my friends away from it.
Trust is a valuable commodity. I can't understand why the dude would throw it away like he did.
My gf is really crafty but she's been away for a few days. When she comes home tonight I'm going to ask her if she feels like taking a shot at making this mod for me (I'd end up cutting off a finger and gluing my eyes shut if I tried to do it), and if not, I'll be contacting Josh. The price, IMO, is very reasonable.

i think the addition of the felt is more practical for the job youre trying to accomplish with this mod as well. the "slimy" guy i believe uses a 2nd foam pad instead of felt.

[B]Update!!
12/28/07: Having filled an unbelievable number of orders already I will be out of stock of [BLACK] drum sets. The reasons for this is that demand has completely gone over the price/availability of supplies.
8 Walmarts & 4 Michael's in 5 hours is quite a feat for rural Pennsylvania.
You can still order the Color Sets for the same price. If you are interested in Black sets they are only available through Ebay and are at a slightly higher price due to the demand/supply issue.
I do have supplies being shipped into me now which should bring the price back down. I will post an update once black pads become available to sell through here again.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Just to add to the noise. What I'm guessing this guy used, if he bought from wal-mart, are the self-adhesive "Foamy Pads" in the arts & crafts section. They come with 6 sheets. Black, white, red, yellow, blue, and green. Only costs $3.48 for the pack. A compass to draw circles = $0.96. So for less than $5 this can be done yourself. It took me about 10-15 minutes to trace, cut, trim and fit all 4. Just a thought.

Hahah yeah, its basically just an option for people. As one guy said it, some people cook hamburgers at home, some go out and eat.
However, the one that still blows my mind, is the guy who wanted them 2 day air to Rome Italy. You think 20$ for a pizza how about 130$ for 2 sets of pads.

Price is now a flat 20$ including Shipping for US. (21$ for Canada)

You can still buy the pads on Ebay if you choose to, just contact me hudock@gmail.com and I will supply links to direct auctions.
I thank everyone who has purchased the pads so far for their support.

I got my drum pads from Josh in december. I love them.

Its a good deal. I made my own this weekend for about $10 in materials and a $20 circle cutter. Its still cheaper than buying the cutter and the mats, and considering the labor involved (you might screw it up and have to eat the cost yourself) its not a bad offer.
I'm going to give the cutter to my mother in law because she'll probably use it again much sooner than I ever will. I won't be surprised if she pays me back cash for it or better yet, in cookies or pies.

Got my kit from Josh with no issues from the ordering and shipping (in Canada) perspective. Put them on and immediately rocked out and I must say it delivers on the noise reduction and can’t say I have notice any decrease in sensitivity. So 2 thumbs up from me. Thanks Josh.

hey josh,
is there any easy way to take off the foam pads off the drum kit once they are put on or will it require a lot of scrubbing?
Taintsaw
01-15-2008, 06:14 PM
Hey brian,
They come right off, there is absolutely no residue. Even after you pull them off you can put them back on, however the stickyness is dependent on how long they were on the drum originally plus how long they were off of it. I take mine off all the time to switch up new pad ideas for ebay.
IslandBoy91
01-15-2008, 07:01 PM
15 each? why on earth when it costs like 6 dollars to make them yourself?? Everyone has a michaels near them and i did mine near perfect just using a sheet of paper and tracing the drum head a couple of times until i got it right. past that its just sticking the foam and felt onto the heads. 15 dollars is a rip off (I am not flaming, just saying)
Well actually... Im an hour and fifteen minute boat ride and an hour drive away from michaels. And if im not back to the ferry terminal by 2:15...I have to spend the night in a crappy hotel.
$16 boat ticket
$3.25(around there) per gallon of gas. 50 or so miles at 13 MPG
about $12 minimum for 3.8 gallons of gas
$60 to stay at a crappy hotel if I dont make the boat (Odds are, I won't)
So uh, I'd probablly save some money just ordering these ones. But I'd rather get some gum rubber discs, I hear their quieter and have much better rebound
