who is the best guitarist in your opinion?

Putting anything relating to Lamb of God in a good light diminishes a poll IMO. Of that list, good ol' Jimi takes the cake.

I agree with onidragon.

But outside of that list, I'd probably have to say Paul Gilbert.

Let's not forget the monstrosity that is Korn.

EDIT: Out of those bands I like Slayer the best, but K.K. is far from the best guitarist.

Yeah, Dime doesn't really use too many string bends. Someone who does would be David Gilmour. Trying to play Pink Floyd solos on high gauge strings is one of the most painful things you can do to your fingers. It ****ing hurts like hell even on .009s.

I'm just throwing it out there that I don't hear the influx of bends unlike a SRV, who is also the man.

Regarding the whole "He was shot and they were popular" thing, they were big already, and to say that he got more attention for his death is lame. It's like when Lennon got shot. He was already a big name.

I have them on standard tuning. I once bought 12's, but the G string is wound, which would give it more warmth to it. Didn't really dig it and it just throws me off. On trem system guitars I usually go with the lighter strings since it's a ***** to calibrate the stupid bridge or throw in another spring if you put heavier strings on.

I wouldn't put Malmsteen above Petrucci; in fact, there are many, far less technical guitarists I would put ahead of Malmsteen. Petrucci and Malmsteen are pretty much even on a technical level, and DT's older stuff is musical and truly progressive; Rising Force has really just been Yngwie showing off since day one.

Of course, Rusty Cooley still blows both of them out of the water.

I ****ing hate metal fans for about three dozen reasons this thread. And I am one.

A) the OP's list of almost entirely metal guitarists, several of which don't belong anywhere near the list

B) Everyone hating on Lamb of God. I remember a few years ago they were well regarded and "the next big thing." Guess what?
They ARE the big thing now, and now all the metal fans have turned their backs on them and are hating on them for no reason.

C) Willie Adler does not belong on that list, but he is actually a very skilled guitarist, more so in his song-writing than technique though. Morton is the more "technical" of the two LoG guitarists. Willie is the more creative one.

D) How thirteen and fourteen year old kids call for moments of silence for and pretty much pray to Dimebag. They weren't Pantera fans when it happened, and they know it.

E) It's been five years people, time to move on. Dime was a definite part of the "metal family," but it's time to move on.

Yngwie's an above average shredder, IMO, but nothing to write home about by any stretch of the imagination. I like a handfull of songs by him, but as a whole his career has not impressed me. It usually just ends up sounding like a lot of really quick scales; like he's trying to warm his hands up to play an actually good song, but that never happens.

That has to be the most absurd list of guitarists for 'greatest ever" poll that I've ever seen. Jimi is the only one on that list that deserves to ever be mentioned as a potential "greatest ever", because without him you never would have gotten 1/2 (the other half coming from Iommi) of the bands that followed him and in turn, those guitarists never would have even had any idea how to do what they do.

Without reading every page of the thread, regarding Yngwie:

Those of you who think he's just some shred guitar player have no idea what made him unique and also reviled in his early days. I've never been a fan,but without him you wouldn't have any of these neo-classical symphonic shred guitarists and bands. From a technical standpoint, there aren't many players with a higher skill level.

lol Even though this is a generic list, you found someway not to include Eddie Van Halen.
Where's
Michael Angelo Baito
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Buckethead
Yngwie Malmsteen
Slash
Dave Mustaine
Paul Gilbert
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Page
I could go on and on...
And Kirk is overrated as f**k.

The artists on the list don't even come close, with the exception of Hendrix, in my humble opinion. I personally think the above list by ZeroOverride is much better...including Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhodes. Also, nobody seems to consider classical and jazz guitarists, some of whom I am sure are amazing (I myself don't know enough classical or jazz guitar players to make an educated suggestion).

IMO...this poll fails miserably.

These, and I'll also add Al di Meola. Skilled, but he rarely diverges into wankery, and when he does, I can ignore it pretty easily.

People, a good guitar player is not a player with skills. A good player is the one that has a feeling for the guitar, like it was his wife, the one that see's the guitar like a part of him.

If was to say the best, the ones that come to mind are:

Steve Ray Vaughan
Carlos Santana
Slash
Jimmy Page
Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck
Pete Townshend

I could keep it on but the others don't come to mind.

Petrucci!

He's technically great, but he has almost no 'feel' for the instrument. He showed some hint of showing feel on his solo record Suspended Animation, but IMO to be considered the greatest guitarist, you have to have technical ability and a great feel for the instrument.

That solo album is strange. I mean, at times it sounds like hes putting emotion into it, but then he usually ends up going back to shredding. Its like the emotion hes puts in is just robotic emotion.

Also on an unrelated side note, I hate people who refer to Buckethead as a mindless shredder too. They need to listen to his Electric Tears album. Not a single song has any shredding in and it is just oozing with feeling and emotion. Buckethead definitely deserves more credit than he gets for being a brilliant guitarist all around rather than just labeled as a shredder because of Jordan and Soothsayer.
