I'm not talking your average compilation of various songs for a game. I'm talking music made for the game.
As of now my favorites are
1) Guild Wars : Factions
2) Sonic the Hedgehog 2
3) Sonic the Hedgehog
4) The Elder Scrolls 3 : Morrowind
5) The Elder Scrolls 4 : Oblivion
Can you guess who my favorite composer in gaming is? :P

I actually prefer quiet game soundtracks but the sonic ones are just oddballs really.
Donkey Kong soundtracks weren't bad by any means though

DKC's OSTs were brilliant and one of the most innovative of their time. There was no better songwriter than Dave Wise and Eveline Fischer for games.

1. Grim Fandango

That it did. I may not listen to it outside the game like the first two (which are just that good), it managed to blend perfectly with the game and it made colossus killing a truly epic experience.

You're asking the right person.
Both Passion (Sanctuary) and Hikari (Simple and Clean)
Hikari was made for Kingdom Hearts but it was also released on an official album as well as Passion. Both of which released as singles about a week before the game the song was in :P

Nothing from childhood is ever as good as you remember it being, I just went back and listened to the version in the opening, and I just realized that the enlish singer is awful. Also, it's wierd looking back and realizing that I was only twelve when this game first came out.

I kind of hate the Tales of Symphonia soundtrack, of course that might be because my little brother has played through the game some seventeen (not an exaggeration) times. The only Tales game I ever got in to at all was Tales of the Abyss, but anythings better than Final Fantasy (except IX).

If you're talking about the entire soundtrack as a whole, I think it's hard to beat Final Fantasy 6. The way it uses leitmotif for every character to tie the various themes together in different styles is nothing short of epic.
As for a collection of individual songs, I'm torn between Xenogears and Chrono Trigger.
But for the single greatest song in a game, defiantly Legacy, the song that plays over the opening credit sequence in Full Throttle. It's a kick-ass song, fits the mood of the game perfectly, and lets you know the type of game you're in for.

I played them when I was in school when they came out, before internet gaming, before Japan does the usual thing and find something semi popular and produce ****ing tons of clone ****. Good stuff, very fond memories. I havent touched a JRPG in over 10 years for more than an hour. I just dont have it in me anymore.

My experience was kind of the opposite, I thought it looked interesting, but was wary due to previous experiences with RPGs that tricked me in to thinking they would be good with reviews and gameplay vids (Mass Effect, Oblivion (:p)), but I actually really, really like it, but, again, I much prefer shooting things.

I didn't play twilight princess, but the N64 zeldas had great soundtracks. And someone said something about DK Country and I agree.
(But I stick with Beyond Good and Evil as my favorite soundtrack).
