Is there a way I can do multiplayer gigs just for fun and not have the song stop because of player failure? I mean for when young kids or real beginners play, so the song doesn't stop. I know about single player practice, but I mean for multiplayer mode. Thanks for any info.

Unfortunately, no, there's no "just for fun" mode... too bad, really.

Kids do need to learn to accept failure and to overcome it.

But seriously, the only way around it is to have them play one at a time through practice mode.

I ran into this problem a lot over Thanksgiving. Sometimes it's just unavoidable, they're gonna fail, but a lot of times we would manage to struggle through by saving the kid who was struggling the most. It helped to try and get the kids to stick to what they're comfortable with, we would have to switch around a lot before we found their comfort zone, either easy bass/guitar or even vocals in some cases. Drums were pretty much untouchable, but we did still manage to have fun regardless. It would be nice too at least have a practice mode that allowed multiplayer, but we managed nontheless. Another thing to keep in mind is to keep them from trying to bite off more than they can chew, that was a problem sometimes, they'd pass a couple songs on easy and want to take on medium. Almost always ended in failure, but again, they still had fun...so really, that's the whole point anyway...

I have 4 children, 9, 11, 14, and 15, and they all love playing the game. My 9 year old actually does better than I do on the drums most of the time :) But if they're having trouble with the drums, we usually have an extra person around to do the foot pedal for them. As far as the younger kids, yeh it would be nice to just be able to play around without failing a song. I don't generally have that problem, as everyone in my family does pretty well at everything. Even my wife tried the guitar yesterday and we only failed about 50 times in a row at the same songs :) The thing is, everyone here is old enough to not want to give up until they beat the song.

But I do think something like a Family Mode would be nice for the game. Something that would make it so you can finish a song no matter what. As far as the lyrics that aren't exactly kid friendly, all of my kids know better than to sing those words, and just substitute something else. And as for the younger kids... if they're playing drums or guitar, I find it hard to believe they're paying enough attention to anything else to notice.
It would probably be way too much work to add in some kind of family mode censor on the lyrics anyway, but if you are worried about that, you can just turn the volume for the song lyrics all the way down ...

OK, thanks for the replies. I guess I'll have to return RockBand to Best Buy and hope for a similar game in the future that's targetted more towards having fun, and playable by less coordinated people. Maybe SingStar games would be better for this Christmas (SingStar Pop PS2 and SingStar PS3). Darn.

That's a good idea for another person to do the foot pedal, cool.

Good idea. A little advice for next time though, if you want a game that young kids will have fun playing, buy one that is actually marketed to them.

Play on Easy, and if your kids can't beat it on easy, than there was no reason to buy the game

OK, I think you guys talked me into keeping the RockStar game and not worrying too much about the younger and less musically coordinated people. I'll get SingStar too, this will be a musical Christmas.

If your kids can't handle bass or guitar on easy, then they have no business playing video games.

Those modes barely require any skill or rhythm whatsoever. You could teach a chimpanzee to play the bass on easy (provided you had enough bananas) just by looking at the screen and ignoring the music.

How old are these kids? 5? 6? If so, then they shouldnt' be playing video games yet anyway. Make them go outside and play tag or hide and go seek.

A monkey does better job singing than me, by the time i get the right pitch the song is over haha good times...But i do agree if they cant play guitar or bass on easy, they may still need to develop hand eye coordination playing with a ball or play tag or whatever kids do, glad i never was one.

Wow, that Bratz drum set is only $16 -- That'll give the 3/5/7 kids something to drum on while others play RockBand, you're brilliant, NattyLight. Saves wear and tear on the nicer drum pads, too.
