View Full Version : Rockband is the cause of my lag, and I can prove it.

Ok,
I have Guitar Hero 2,3,4, Metallica, Arrowsmith, Rockband 1 + 2. My setup is Epson 1080UB Pro, Denon 3808Ci, Outlaw Power Amp and Definitive Tech Mythos 7.1 Surround. I have done lag tests on every game and the only one that has any noticeable lag is Rockband. I've tried resyncing through HDMI, I've tried using headphones through the receiver and I've even tried running optical out directly from the Xbox to my Ear Force X4's. Anyways, here are my lag test results with the same system one after the other.
Rockband 1 - 18ms
Rockband 2 - 17ms
Guitar Hero WT - 1ms
Guitar Hero 2,3 - 0ms
Guitar Hero Metallica - 0ms
Guitar Hero Aerosmith - 0ms.
BTW, I am running with Direct Input on the Denon and I am bypassing all processing on my receiver and projector.
I am not trying to say that Rockband isn't a completely superior game, because it is. I am just saying that it's the game that's the cause of the lag and not the system. Also, even with "minimal" lag (which 17ms is not if you are familiar with recording audio) it's harder to calibrate your audio so that 32nd notes trigger properly on the drums. I know this because they are much more accurate on GHWT and Metallica.

Techinical forum is a better home for these shenanigans.

Sorry, but the only thing your numbers prove is that GH uses a different calibration system than RB does, not that RB causes lag.
For all we know, GH could have a different baseline for their "0 ms" setting, automatically adding 15ms or so in the background. That would make their "0 ms" setting equal to the "15 ms" setting in RB.

which in the end means nothing since the timing window on the latest GH engine is pretty wide compared to RB's.

Ok, I'll give you the timing engine is different. How do you explain the lack of drum/fill lag in GH vs. Rockband on the same system??? There is a noticeable lag when playing on Rockband Drum Freestyle also.

Have you tried turning dolby 5.1 off? It's a known condition of certian receivers to have some processing lag on 5.1 audio.

Yes, DD 5.1 is off. Believe me, I've tried everything. I have a very sensitive ear from recording music and I can tell a "major" difference in latency between GHWT and RB. It really stinks because, again, Rockband is a far superior game overall.

meanwhile every experience I;ve had with GH leaves me feeling like teh notes on the screen have nothing to do with what I'm hearing. I record music as well(though mostly digitally, as in few live instruments). as long as I use auto calibrate in rock band every feels in sync on my system even with 5.1 on.

I've used auto calibration and find that the latency is sporadic. The only way to get the best calibration on my system is to do it with the Ion.
