So, it's been about two weeks since the game's launch. One of those was a holiday. So, they've had a week to look into some of the issues and formulate plans. Why has the announcements page not been updated since 11-28, 6-7 days ago. I was really hoping that that post was a sign of a commitment to be more communicative. But, been waiting all day for news in the announcements section and... nothing. Anybody else a bit disappointed?

The game came out a few weeks ago, DLC is being pumped out weekly as promised, a crapload of new guitars are keeping previously unhappy people very happy, we're on the verge of an amazing new site, and you're disappointed?

Yeah, no word on PS3 Les Paul, now word on WHEN this new site is actually coming, and no word on one of my biggest pet peeves, inability to back up the save file. Also, the gutiars have nothing to do with Harmonix, they are handled by EA to my knowledge. All I want is a quick "Hey, this is how stuff is coming along."

Yeah, the read-only save file has got to be dealt with--one of the pluses of the PS3 is that it's easy to swap out the existing HDD for a bigger one, and with the save file the way it is, the only way that's an option is if you're willing to start Rock Band from scratch.

Doubleplus ungood.

Ok, so lets say with the announcement of the DivX coming to PS3, I want to switch out the 60GB drive I have for a 250 or 500GB drive. I know all the things about how it doesn't void the warranty and such, but does that mean RB DLC and saves won't carry over as it stands right now?

Are all other games this way or is it just Rock Band?

Thanks for help. This is the only thing I'm really unclear on the PS3.

End of noob questions.

We know the new site is coming within the first few weeks of December, the Les Paul is a RedOctane issue, and for your save issues...uhhh...

Anything that you downloaded from the PlayStation Store can be re-downloaded after you change out the drive. The PlayStation Store allows the same machine to download stuff it has already downloaded for exactly this reason.

Anything else on your drive needs to be backed up and copied back to the new drive, which brings us to the Rock Band read-only save game file.

I don't know about backing up the game elements that are installed when you run a game, but, of course, you can skip over backing them up and let them re-install the next time you run that game.

Does that cover all your questions?

Yes, that seems to work. Thank you very much, sir.

Man is the save system really that bad?

Man is the save system really that bad?

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking.

Everything's fine with the existing HDD in the PlayStation--you should never have to copy or re-download anything unless you have a drive crisis.

But if you want to upgrade from a 20/40/60/80 GB drive to something in the 250 GB range, you'll want to back things up and restore them--this can be done with a USB thumb drive or external USB HDD.

Replacing the drive itself is trivial--you simply take off a panel and unscrew a single retaining screw, then swap it out for any 2.5" form-factor SATA drive.

The issue with the save system has nothing to do with the PS3 itself--it has to do with a choice that Harmonix or EA made to make the save file a read-only file, thus giving you no way to back it up if you want to upgrade the hard drive on your PS3. The average Rock Band owner may be fortunate enough to never confront this issue, but it's always safer to make a back-up.

Just seems more complex (for a console) than it has to be.

Well thats the cost of upgrading a hard drive which I plan to do when DivX becomes available.

But the PS3 isn't a console. It's an entertainment computer.

Sony tried to sell it that way and got laughed at, but, in fact, it is an entertainment computer that they're now pretending is a console so that it can compete with similarly-priced 360 models.

You can actually install Linux on the PS3. There's a version of it (Yellow Dog) that was designed specifically for that purpose.
