View Full Version : Best live rock and roll band?

I was just thinking, what do you guys think is the best live band of all-time? I've heard different assertions in the past and it got me thinking. So feel free to share!
Note: Now, of course, this thread is absed off of OPINIONS, therefore, most everyone will have differing OPINIONS. So, no one should feel the need to attack anyone else's OPINIONS, because they are most likely going to differ.
P.S. Rock and roll is every genre that is under the "rock" branch, including metal, blues-rock, folk rock, punk ANYTHING that involves rock.

The Allman Brothers Band, during the Duane era.
As far as bands that are still around, Drive-By Truckers are definitely up there. And Rush just keeps getting better and better.
It's really hard to judge who the best live band is, though, because there is a huge difference in the type of experience you get from a club/theater style show and an arena type show. I find the former to be infinitely more rewarding.

Personally, for me, it's Alice in Chains. I mean, even with Layne when he was going through his darkest period, was amazing. The whole band could just do what they needed and more. Jerry's always been a sick, sick guitarist, and has never let down. Mike and Sean were always sweet at keeping the band on track, on beat, and sounding ****ing heavy and huge-ass! (Plus, Mike always looked real kewl when he'd be playing and flinging that HUGE hair around :D)

The Allmans are great, and would be amazing if they still had Oakley and Duane Saw them last Tuesday. Was amazing. They are great at jamming. The Who are also great live. Live at Leeds anyone? Rush is also very good live. Plan on seeing them again if they tour.

This honor currently belongs to Gogol Bordello. Simply an amazing show.
They took another band I would have given that honor to on tour with them a few years back - Throw Rag. They lost some band members which takes their show down a few notches, but its still one hell of a show. Its pretty impossible to replace a mostly naked washboard player who drink his nipple sweat with the washboard spoons though.

Riverboat Gamblers, you've probably never heard them but they were #15 on Spin Magazine 25 best live bands ever. This was their description.
Mike Wiebe never met a wall he couldn't bounce off, a lighting rig he couldn't hang from, a monitor he couldn't hurdle, or a fan that wouldn't try to rescue him from certain doom. And he's got the bruises, gashes, and broken bones to prove it. As the frontman for punk pop's best kept secret, Wiebe is truly the hardest-working maniac in rock, and the other guys in the band are nearly as mobile -- if way more sensible.
BEST MOMENT: When it's looking like someone's got to call an ambulance. Happens every show.

Surely someone has said the Ramones. The rise of punk rock, especially in America, can arguably be traced to their spreading the word in their live shows.
On another note, there have been other threads that seemingly try to equate a concert DVD with being at the concert. I will state my opinion as fact. It is not the same thing and you really can't judge a band's live performance until you have seen it in person.

the last Coheed and Cambria show i went to really stands out in my mind, probably because i was with fans of the band, and it was in a small rock club, but the energy was undeniable. Coheed is one of the few bands ive seen that can put on an EPIC show. and the fact that they did that to maybe only 3000 people is amazing in my mind. ive said it over and over again, coheed is one of the best live bands in the world when they are playing to their fans. the whole Slipknot tour fiasco is proof of this.
also it had a 24 minute Chris Pennie drum solo,so it was going to be good anyway.

not for me, if is used in addition to tom, snare and bass pedal. and that is how he did it. i get quite bored if a drummer just pounds out jungle beats and calls it a solo.

The best show I ever seen was Queensryche on the Building Empires/ Operation: Livecrime tour. Kiss also puts on a fantastic show, But last time I seen them They had Ted Nugent opening. Ted blew them off the stage.
I've seen several performances of Radiohead live and their very very good. I really hope to see them live someday. As for great live bands go I'll say The Who, Nine Inch Nails, AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, and many more.

Limiting myself to more or less straight "rock" (as opposed to jazz, classics, etc.), my personal favorites of the bands I've seen:
Springsteen/E Street Band
The Pogues
The Who
Television
Richard Thompson (with and without Linda)
The Clash
Bob Dylan/ The Band
Parliament/Funkadelic
Ramones
Roxy Music
Al Green
Costello/The Attractions
Talking Heads
The Blasters
Faces with Rod Stewart
Rockpile
Saw Zeppelin twice: great once, dire once. Same for The Replacements. The Stones were all over the map, but '69 and '72 were both great; things got spottier after that.
James Brown was great, but like Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, and even Elvis, their best days were behind them when I saw them, so it's hard for me to really evaluate them. I did see some of the other great 60's soul acts, but their tendency to glam up their act, Vegas-style, always left me admiring the performance more than thoroughly enjoying it (even Aretha).
Others I really enjoyed would include XTC, Drive-By Truckers, The Sadies, Creedence, The Police, U2, Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult, Pretenders, Pentangle, Neko Case, Allmans, Garbage.

But I haven't seen them live in person, so I'm going to say Rush. I saw them last year, and they were definitely "on". And by "on", I mean as "on" as a band could be. Definitely "on"er than they were on the Snakes and Arrows Live CD.

Iron Maiden and Coheed and Cambria. Maiden...come on, it's Iron f'in Maiden, no explanation needed. And Coheed are just full of energy live; it's hard to describe. Though I'm not a huge fan of the new found Chris Pennie solos during the extended version of The Final Cut, but the improv guitar work always amazes me. Drums by themselves hurt my ears after a short period of time.
Journey and Def Leppard also put on pretty good live shows, though I've only seen both bands once. And Motley Crue had a pretty crazy show, although the softcore pr0n they started playing on their screens after a while kind of got annoying.

I think the reason i enjoy it so much is because i play drums. Chris Pennie is an idol of mine. i mean, the man is a monster behind the kit. Thats the thing about Coheed, its hard to describe, but they have such an energy behind their shows, and the crowd feeds off of it, and the crowd gives it back.

I'm not a huge fan of them, but I've seen them live twice and they've absolutely blown me away both times. The raw energy and atmosphere they create is incredible.
The most fun I've ever had at a concert is seeing The Sword at First Unitarian in Philadelphia (both times). It was as much about the crowd and the venue as the band itself (and being front row both times didn't hurt).

Kind of surprised that nobody has mentioned Pink Floyd. Even though I prefer the Water's era music, both the Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell tours were great. The visual "show" elements (espeically on the Division Bell tour) were amazing.
I only wish I had been old enough to see The Wall tour.
Another great live performer is Peter Gabriel - especially the Secret World and full blown Growing Up tours. Both tours had set designs done by Robert Lepage, making the concert - IMO - a "theatrical" event.

Believe it or not, I'm NOT going to say Soundgarden! Sure, they had several great live performances (check out their songs from the Use Your Illusion tour), but Cornell had a hard time hitting the high notes live.
From my very limited knowledge, Mountain. Perhaps it's because the only live performance I've personally seen was Satch/Mountain and Satch does not do improv, but Mountain just brought me back to a period waaaay before my time.

To be honest, that's probably because every member of the band wanted to kill Chris at that point.
Ugh, I wish I was fifteen years older... It would have been great to see Soundgarden in its prime. My only hope is for a reunion tour, and even that won't be the same with Chris's weakned voice.

Staley is hit or miss live. Some shows (like your link) are truly amazing live. However I've seen performances of songs like Them Bones that are plain pitiful. I dunno. Of course, he harmonizes himself so much on the recordings, I gotta be able to understand what he's limited to doing live

all the older guys I talk music with say zz top is the best concert they've seen, for me it's a toss up between Tool and Steve Vai, both had amazing stage shows and some great music, Tool's show relied more on visuals but Vai's musicianmanship and stage presence were off the charts, not to say that Tool doesn't have some great musical abilities, they did a song with mesheggah that was pretty amazing. Queens of the stoneage put on a great show to, I went to see NiN but in my opinion Qotsa stole the show, nothing extremely impressive about it, but they kept the audience entertained the entire show.

Tool. It has nothing to do with the band members. It's all about the atmosphere - hearing the music, seeing the visuals, etc. all together. It's an altogether impossible experience to describe. The old school bands like KISS and Zepp may have had energy, but they're not alone in that. Tool is out there...
I'll also toss out Slipknot simply because of the number of active band members onstage. :P Also, Joey plays upside down solos. That's pretty sweet.

My aunt saw Queen live when she was in college and she said it was the best concert she'd ever been to in her life (and she's seen Phish).
The only live concert I've ever been to was a Keith Urban concert. Sad, I know. I'm not a big fan of country, but it was for my friend's birthday, and she is absolutely obsessed with the guy. The concert was alright. The band didn't have much energy, but Keith's guitar playing was actually really impressive. He threw in some crazy solos that you wouldn't expect to hear in a pop-country song. Has anyone else seen Keith Urban live?

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. 3 hour shows, 30+ song setlists, crowd requests, etc. Incredible.

in my opinion Rush is very good live. A live Neil Peart drum solo is incredible they really seem to care about the fans.
Another great one is Alice Cooper. He really strated a genertation, the shows are so much fun and he is full of energy. You never know what he is going to do next.

Since I have seen every single rock and roll band live, I will have to state that it is clearly Michael Angelo Batio and his band Nitro.

Also proof that you don't need drugs to see Phish (I've been completely sober for all 40 shows).

Led Zeppelin and the Grateful Dead I think are the best live acts in rock and roll.

The best live act I have seen was My Bloody Valentine. They freaking KILLED it. second best would have to go to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, they are very amazing live as well. I have also heard and seen (on DVD) several 311 concerts and they kick ass as well but I have not gotten the chance to see them live in person yet so I am not counting them.
