Layne Staley, the singer for Alice In Chains, should be remembered as one of the greatest singers of all time. he puts Kurt Cobaine, Chris Cornell, and Eddie Vedder to shame. i remember, but do you?

Hell yeah I do! Then again, I live in Seattle... And I grew up on grunge.

I know I remember him. He will always be remembered by Grunge fans. I think Jar of Flies is probably his best performance.

He was fantastic. He will be sorely missed, and I gotta say, if I could have any voice, it'd be his or Jim Morrison's.

Layne was infinitely better than Kurt or Chris. I'd call it a tie between him and Eddie, though....Ed's got one helluva voice.

There really isn't a contest between him and Kurt (after all, Kurt was arguably the weakest vocalist to come out of the whole bloody grunge movement), but I wouldn't put him above Chris. They're both quite awesome, though.

I don't know, Vedder, Staley, and Cornell all have incredibly awesome unique voices.

pay respect to one of the greats. Alice in Chains is my childhood and still my favorite group to this day. It is so sad the way Layne went out, no one even knew for like 2 weeks that he was dead. kind of pisses me off. only if someone in the group would have beat some sense into Layne he might still be here. RIP

with their guitarist jerry cantrell now singer, its NO LONGER alice in chains. change the ****in name cantrell. layne owned the band. he made the songs. he was everything for that band to be something. i still listen to unplugged, and i think it's one of their best albums. but it no longer tells the pain, struggle, and torment of layne's drug use. it sense no feeling in their new ****. in my opinion, chains died with layne.

Indeed...
For sheer power and range - Cornell whips both Vedder (Listen to Temple of the Dog) and Staley (limited range)
Staley had 'em all whipped when it came to projecting desperation and the hope for hope.
Eddie is able to connect with people and rattle something around in their brains, almost messiah like.
All hail the Grunge Kings!
edit: Cobain....Great Song Writer...ok vocalist...

I disagree, I personally can't stand Ed's voice. Sounds kinda country for me, I don't know why.

Vedder's vocals are good when he's not in Pearl Jam.

Much better than what I heard him try to do in Pearl Jam.

Yeah, when Vedder first started, most of his vocals were near-incoherent, and he didn't have a whole lot of control over his voice. His voice definitely matured over the years, although a lot preferred his "sloppy" vocals.

His sloppy vocals were awful, lmao.
PS: In a bad way.

It's possible to use the word "awful" in a good way?

Yes, sometimes I can love a awful vocalist. They just have to do it right. Like this:

Nope, Cantrell did a lot of them.
What's with all the Cobain hate though? I think Staley's good, (better than Vedder) and I was disapointed with the choice of DuVall. I think the Tool guy would've been good.

Hmm....He seems too whiney for AiC.

He's kinda' busy with Tool and wine tasting.
No srsly.
Also, I like Layne, but I actually prefer Cobain to him. Not that he's "better" in any technical sense of the word. I just happen to like Kurt's style moar.

Alice In Chains is my favorite of all the grunge bands, and one of my favorites overall. Layne had a great voice. I liked when Staley and Cantrell were both supplying vocals. Kind of a nice contrast.

as i said before. a majority of the songs came from layne and is addiction to heroine.look at down in a hole. how do you think he felt? he couldn't crawl his way out even if he wanted to. and he gave into himself, which dug a deeper hole. he was like a bird with his wings clipped.
