View Full Version : Suggest a Pearl Jam album?

Been awhile since I did my last one!

Anyway, I've never properly given Pearl Jam a chance. Are they worth anything? or am I just poking sticks at mehtastic? Either way, I haven't heard a whole lot recently and I like some Vedder's guest work, so it's not a lost cause. So before I pick a random album and possibly be disappointed.... recommend a album to change my mind! or two even!

Yep!

BUT! I am giving them a new chance, so throw it at me.

What I said. GOGOGOGOGOGO!

Ten

Ten or Vs. (first and second album, respectively) are good starting points, I'd say.
Each album they kind of branch out and try some new things, so it's hard to define PJ with just one record.
If Ten is a little too arena-rock for you, give Vs. a shot; it retains all of their youthful aggression while moving into more exotic territory.

If you had to say any record, which one defines the band?

"Yield" is the way to go.

I like Vs. the best, but I feel like you would enjoy Vitalogy the most. Ten is actually one of my least favorite PJ albums, although this might just have something to do with how overplayed the singles and even some of the album tracks are around here.

I hate Yield with a passion.

I'm not familiar enough with some of their latter material to answer that, though I'll say that Ten would be the album I loaned to friends who wanted to check them out. Not only does it have most of their recognizable songs, it's also a logical starting point for the band's progression (what with it being the debut and all).
Normally I would tell someone that if they didn't like Ten they wouldn't like anything else by Pearl Jam, but since your tastes are a little more eclectic than most I wouldn't give you the same advice. Honestly, you might find Ten to be somewhat dull but really enjoy Vs. or Vitalogy.

I'd say Ten defines the band. It has their most well known songs, plus some great deeper cuts, and it was what established them. I can see you possibly enjoying Black, Release, Master/Slave, and Once.

However, it should be noted that the band has commented that they don't like the sound quality on Ten.

vitalogy is the only one i really dig...
the first two albums have some good songs, but vitalogy is about 75% quality.

Now that I think about it, Ten is the only one I have heard all the way through. I might run through their discography eventually.

Ten

Ten is probably one of the most uninteresting albums I've ever heard, if this is a staple of the band.... I'm not impressed. Eddie Vedder has alright vocals, I guess... in other bands. Seriously can you get any more dull then this record? I definitely am glad I didn't download any of the tracks from the DLC market. I guess they could be fun, but they seem like some of the most bland songs I've ever heard. I hope the other record I grabbed isn't as bad as this. This is truly a depressing end thought. I don't think this record is going to do anything for me and it depresses me that Mission of Burma fan's can shurn out such processed tripe.

Sorry for those who liked it, but meh.

Vitalogy

Arena rock riffs, Ten-esque sound with some attempt at furthering themselves. Hm. Yeah, this won't go well. This isn't I guess as bad as Ten was, but it certainly isn't good for me either. Another miss for me. I don't think I'll like Pearl Jam guys, but I'll keep both albums and try to process them at a later date.....

The great thing about Pearl Jam is they are constantly evolving. All their albums sound pretty different, and all are worth checking out.

Try Binaural if you don't like the juvenile side of their earlier releases.

I'm relatively alone in that I like Riot Act. But you also don't like the stuff I liked before I met you, so hey =p

Ten I would say is their definitive record and all that, but you already said you don't like it, so yeah.

If it helps, Ten did nothing for me until the second or third listen.

Took me awhile to get into Ten myself
I really loved Yield though, it's a lil' more crazy, upbeat, and one of their more energetic albums.

Okay I just picked up Riot Act and it sounds pretty well done so far, will keep you guys posted. I still dislike Ten, Vitalogy has grown a little bit on me though.

I've heard VS and I couldn't stand it. It wasn't as terrible as Ten but still.

Like I said, it's different so I wouldn't find it at all odd for someone to like one portion (or at least an album) of their career more than another.

Good to hear that you're liking it. :)

it's kinda obvious if you dislike Ten you'd hate Vs., Vitalogy and possibly Yield might be somewhat pleasing though (but i still doubt Mike would like them)

I cannot completely disagree with your assessment of Ten. It is still a fun album for me for sentimental reasons, but I would categorize it on the boring side.

Vs. is better, and I think Vitalogy has some really interesting music on it.
