I was doing those band voting things in the ultimate setlist forum and two different times I voted for Chumbawamba and both times people treated it like a joke. I was wondering if that's their place in rocks history, as some sort of joke?

I think a lot of people see them as a novelty act.

I didn't say I considered them a novelty act, but people probably view Tubthumping as a joke.

I don't even like Tubthumping. I like their early stuff when they were a crust/anarchists punk band

That's because people haven't heard anything beyond Tubthumping, which I still think is an awesome song regardless.

that reminds me of that episode of scrubs, where JD's inside voice was going to sing that forever if he didnt have sex with Elliot.

good show.

but i do feel sorry for chumbwumba.they remind me of Devo, a band with one big hit, but some much better stuff beyond that one hit.

chumbawumba has a stupid sounding name, and a silly one hit, which makes the rest of their (admittedly awesome) career seem like wasted time.

The tubthumping single was the first cassette I ever owned (excluding the whole "I'm six years old and the backstreet boys rock" period)

The reason why people think they are a joke, is simply the belief that they were a One Hit Wonder. Whether they are, or not, makes no difference in the situation.

Bands are made or broken by radio play, or that is how it used to work before all the stuff happened with peer to peer networks. And that one song on the radio, usually generates a stereotype of the type of music that would be on that CD. But one song, isn't enough to make many of us want to purchase an album.

I thought Tub Thumping was a fun song, rather silly and childish but still kind of fun. But it was the only thing I ever heard from them. And on top of that, the radio stations played it into the ground. It got to the point where if I heard anything that resembled the first few notes, I would groan and change the channel.

There are many of good bands that this happened to. But, it happened, and still does. And once someone has a certain mindset, no matter how open they may be, it takes a bit to change that.
