View Full Version : Lazy Modern Bands?

Ok I have a question for everyone. Why is it that bands in the 60's and 70's released multiple albums a year, and bands that are popular now wait years in between releases? Is that the way the industry is now? Do bands tour longer? Or do they rest on their laurals more?
Here's a few numbers to back up my claim.

Beatles = 18 in 6 years
Led Zeppelin = 7 in 7 years
CCR = 7 in 4 years
AAR = 3 in 6 years
Papa Roach = 6 in 12 years
Blue October = 5 in 11 years

AAR, PR, and BO were selected by looking a the billboard modern "rock" charts. And I use "rock" very lightly. lol

Because music is a very different business than it was in the sixties. Heck, many motown bands had like 2-3 records a year in the sixties. You can blame record companies for changing expectations or the publics fascination with music not as dedicated as in the past.

...or uh something like that.

The average Beatles album was between 30 and 35 minutes long. Death Magnetic, for instance, is almost 75 minutes. That's a major difference right there.

And yeah, when a band is releasing two albums a year, they aren't going to be touring for each one.

The beatles also never toured for any album from Revolver onward.

What Gowie said, the music industry has changed a lot since the Sixties, and although popular artists are still pressed a lot, they also get off a lot easier and often have more freedom to tour rather than record a follow-up they'd rather not.

The Beatles only released 13 albums of original material. I don't know where you got 18 from.

I blame market saturation.

I think the reason you see big major label bands only releasing albums ever few years is that nowadays, they make next to no money off of their albums. Touring and selling merch is a much more profitable endeavor than selling CDs, because the label takes almost all of the profits from CDs.

The public is very unforgiving when it comes to music. If one album sucks then all their fans could leave them in an instant. I love Gorillaz, but they put out a new album every 5 years. I'm (sort of) ok with it though because they never made a bad studio album. (Their remix stuff kind of sucks though.)

And as said before, if I payed 16 bucks for a record that only last 30 minutes I would be pissed That's 3 posters!

Bands used to compete with only a fraction of artists there are. Look at metal. In the 70s there was like 2 dozen big bands making heavy metal. Now you get over 150 new metal albums a month.

Plus, don't forget that record companies are less willing to put money on more and more albums. If the album isn't a hit then they could drop the artist without a problem. There are times where the record company will just not let the band record anything, but keep them in a label. Screwing them from ever making music.

Well Damon even said himself, The Gorillaz isn't really even a project he's gonna work day and night for... his solo career is more important to him.

Gorillaz are just that a side project

I know that, but Gorillaz is what I appreciate the most from him. It's too bad, something about the Gorillaz lore always gets to me.

I just counted the studio albums wiki had listed. Now that I've looked them over, it does appear that there are a few compilations. But 13 in 6 years is still pretty noteworthy. And thanks for all the input. I knew I could count on my HoR posters. lol

I'm just a fan of Damon Albarn, Gorillaz actually got me into Blur and his solo work... somehow

Same here. I was never really a Blur fan so the Gorillaz is the only Damon Albarn group I'll listen to.

I was the opposite. I kinda got out of blur once damon starting making an ass of himself. eventually, i started liking gorillaz though. It's really catchy stuff. Pop Whore '09 can't resist a good hook.

I don't particularly dig the Gorillaz. I wish Hewlett would just get back to solely making comics again.

There are better comic creators out there. A Gorillaz by Alex Robinson would rule the universe 19 times to Sunday.

Tank Girl will always have a place in my heart, but yes, there are much better comic book artists and writers out there. The Hernandez bros crush anyone else in their field.

I think we have slightly differing tastes in comic books. I do want to read Blankets though.

Blankets is so good. You get that moment of clarity that rarely happens. You get that shock of, "that just happened" going on. I let my friend borrow it and when he was finished he just walked to a park and sat on a bench for an hour. Amazing.

Sounds awesome, definately worth a look then. I really enjoyed Persepolis as well, it was devastating, I could really connect to that one.
